Pre-Meeting Notes

• Remember to review the notes section of the presentation prior to presenting

• Review GPS Scorecard and Rankings (give some positive recognition to those who are doing well)

• Engage the team in safety with discussion of:• Does anyone one have examples of “Stop the job”?• Does anyone have any safety concerns?• Review significant company incidents – Use them

to engage in a conversation

What is GHS

GHS replaces OSHA’s HAZ-COM and MSDS Standards

GLOBALLY HARMONIZED SYSTEM (GHS)

● - ● - ● - ● - ● - ● - ● - ● - ● - ●

IMPLEMENTATION TIME LINE

• December 1, 2013 – All employees must be trained on the new label elements and safety data sheets (SDS) format

• June 1, 2015 – Rain for Rent must be in compliance with new standards. NOTE: Distributors may ship products labeled by manufacturers under the old system until December 1, 2015

• December 1, 2016 – Update alternative workplace labeling and hazard communication program as necessary. Provide additional employee training for newly identified physical or health hazards.|-

IMPLEMENTATION TIME LINE

Goal: Rain for Rent to be fully compliant by December 31, 2014

GLOBALLY HARMONIZED SYSTEM

• Countries have varying regulations for chemical hazards

• This requires multiple labels and safety data sheets for the same product when conducting international trade

GLOBALLY HARMONIZED SYSTEM (GHS)

GLOBALLY HARMONIZED SYSTEM

• GHS is an internationally recognized system created by the United Nations

• It is a common and clear approach to defining and classifyinghazards, and communicating information on labels and safetydata sheets

• Globally Harmonized System (GHS) replaces the HazardousCommunication Standard

SAFETY DATA SHEETS (SDS)

• Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) will now be called SafetyData Sheets (SDS)

• The SDS will have 16 standardized consecutive sections

• Comprehensive information about a chemical substance ormixture, including hazards and safety precautions, should beprovided on a SDS

• The SDS must be readily accessible to all employees

LABELING

• Each container of a classified hazardous chemical is to be labeled, tagged, or marked with the following:

Product Identifier Signal Word Hazard Statement(s) Pictogram(s) Precautionary Statement(s) Name, address, and telephone number of responsible party

• Information on labels and SDS sheets must match

LABELING, cont.

• Whenever a chemical is transferred from the manufacturer’s container to a secondary container, a label must be placed on the new receptacle

• Branches must place labels on all secondary containers by December 31, 2013

LABELING – SIGNAL WORDS• Used to emphasize hazards and indicate the relative level of

severity of the hazard

• Assigned to GHS hazard class and category

• Two options for signal words:

Warning – Less severe hazards Danger – More severe hazards

• Only one signal word should be used per label. Use the wordthat corresponds with the most severe hazard.

LABELING – HAZARD STATEMENTS

• Standard phrases assigned to a hazard class and category thatdescribe the nature of the hazard

• Hazard classification is determined by the manufacturer by aspecific criteria based upon the classification of chemical mixtures,as well as health and physical hazards

• Example: Flammable Liquids Category 1: Extremely flammable liquid and vapor Category 2: Highly flammable liquid and vapor Category 3: Flammable liquid and vapor Category 4: Combustible liquid

LABELING – PICTOGRAMS• For transport, pictograms will have the background and symbol

colors currently used

LABELING – PICTOGRAMS• For all other sectors, pictograms will have a black symbol on a

white background with a red diamond frame

LABELING – PRECAUTIONARY STATEMENTS

• GHS labels should include appropriate precautionary information. This will include statements on:

• How to protect employees from coming in contact withthe product

• What to do if exposed to the chemical• i.e., “If in eyes, rinse cautiously with water for several minutes.

Immediately call a poison center, doctor or physician.”

• The intent is to harmonize precautionary statements in the future
