How do roots work?

• Prefixes, bases, and suffixes are all roots.

• When joined together, these roots create new words.

Prefixes come at the beginning.

Bases come in the middle.

Suffixes come at the end.

Prefixes give important details about the word.

Bases describe the main idea. A base is the main meaning of the word.

Suffixes also give important details.

A prefix is a word part added to the

beginning of a root word.

Can you figure out how each of these prefixes gives a new meaning to the base “cycle”?

• unicycle• bicycle• tricycle• motorcycle• recycle

Cycle= circle or wheel

A prefix changes the meaning of a

word. Cycle means wheel, but recycle means cycling back or again.

Remember-A suffix is a word part added to the

end of a root word.

Can you figure out how each of these suffixes gives new meaning to the base?

• hard• harder• hardest

• color• colorful• colorless

Remember-A suffix gives a detail about the

word.

How can I use this word’s roots to figure out what the word means?

Randy’s bike tire was flat. He couldn’t find the pump because the garage was in disorder. “It’s hopeless,” said Randy. “I’ll never make it to the soccer game on time.”

“That’s nonsense,” said his brother Jake. “You can use my bike.”

“Gee, thanks,” said Randy, hopping on the bike.

“See, I can be likable!” said Jake with a grin.
