Life of UTAR Alumni in Huawei UAE
From UTAR News:

Alumni shine at Huawei UAE
After being gainfully employed by Huawei United Arab Emirates (UAE) last year,
seven UTAR alumni are now having an elevating and eye opening work experience
overseas.
The attributes of these alumni at work have also greatly impressed Huawei UAE.
“We’d like to thank UTAR for providing us talented individuals who will be the
backbone of our company in the future,” wrote Huawei UAE in its testimonial.
According to the Chinese multinational networking and telecommunications
equipment company, the UTAR fresh graduates were sent to the headquarters for
professional training which included Huawei’s corporate culture, service specifications,
professional technical skills and others. “Their dual language competencies,
communication skills, organizational skills and good discipline have received high
compliments from the trainers and training departments,” as stated in the testimonial.
The employed UTAR graduates were described as “diligent, motivated, humble,
inquisitive, sociable, driven at work and fast learners under one-to-one supervision.”
Information Technology Communications and Networking graduate Lee Jia Jun said
that this is his first job and his first time working away from his home country. “I have
colleagues from other parts of the globe and it’s been great working together as a
team as well as adapting to the work environment,” he said. Lee felt that the two-
month training provided by Huawei UAE made him realize that there is no end to
knowledge, thus spurring him to constantly enrich himself to add value to his work. “I
consider my job as a challenge. Hence, to perform better, I should constantly improve
myself in all aspects to give my best to the company, and also to grow with it.”
Petrochemical Engineering graduate Lim Kai Huei shared, “Working in a foreign land
for the first time and as a fresh graduate, it is the warmth of the colleagues that gave
me a sense of belonging. In Huawei UAE, all of us are pretty much like one big happy
family and we often organize outdoor activities, thus solidifying our bond as a team.”
Mechanical Engineering graduate Lim Khai Choon concurred, saying that the spirit of
working and learning together as a team is a corporate culture which has helped him
through when he first reported duty. “We’re really lucky that Huawei is willing to send
us for a two-month long intensive training. So it shows that we’re an asset to the
company and that staff development is of great importance,” said Khai Choon, who is
also humbled by his colleagues’ selflessness in guiding him at work.
Very much like Lee, Kai Huei and Khai Choon, the international exposure has
provided Marketing graduate Jeffrey Yu Kern Liang an enriching work experience as
a Network Engineer. “I have made some really good friends here and I appreciate the
opportunity given by UTAR and Huawei UAE which helped us to grow in different
ways. Such an opportunity is indispensable for fresh graduates like us,” he said.
Aware that in order to progress in his career there should be a substantial knowledge
about IT and related fields, Yu’s inquisitiveness and passion to learn drove him to
learn more about the company, its culture, its products, allowing him to adapt to his
role better. “My colleagues are more than willing to assist and guide me whenever I
have questions. The intense technical training also allowed me to quickly master all
the fundamentals and the technicalities of Huawei products.”
Yu’s sentiments were also echoed by Civil Engineering graduate Koh Fang Han.
“Continuous improvement while staying dedicated to your job is one of the necessary
factors to be a high achiever,” Koh mentioned. “Being a Civil Engineering fresh
graduate, taking the step of crossing over the boundary to the network field requires
tremendous amount of courage,” the now Huawei UAE Network Engineer in Data
Communication added. Just like his fellow UTARians, Koh’s affable nature allowed
him to blend into the company’s diverse workforce. “Everyone in the team is really
helpful and gives a helping hand if when asked,” Koh said, and added this is a job
which he plans to make as a career.
The alumni are indebted to their alma mater, UTAR, for providing them quality
education and also a platform to reach out to potential employers. “The soft skills
acquired through active involvement in club activities and events during my UTAR
days are handy,” professed Yu, who also said that the spirit of teamwork and
communication skills learnt as an undergraduate are some of the most valuable
lessons which have given him an edge in his job.
When asked about advice to juniors who intend to jumpstart their careers with
Huawei UAE, Yu advised, “Be proactive. This is a great opportunity for fresh
graduates. You will learn a lot as there are so much learning resources. Working
overseas requires discipline and patience to learn and understand.”
Lee further added, “The education we received at UTAR has built a very solid
foundation for us, and can be highly useful if you plan to work here. Therefore, learn
not because you need to sit for exam, but understand the theories and practical
technical skills which are the basis for understanding work processes.” The FICT
graduate also said that it is important to have faith in oneself, be positive and
optimistic so as to create a pleasant working environment.
All the alumni are currently still working with Huawei UAE.
