Preparation of Dihydrogen.

1. Laboratory preparation of Dihydrogen

i. It is prepared by the reaction of granulated zinc

with dilute hydrochloric acid.

Ex: Zn +HCl ZnCl2+H2

ii. Other laboratory method is by the

action of metals like Zn, Al on strong alkalis

like NaOH or KOH

Ex:Zn+2NaOH Na2ZnO2+H2

2.Commercial production of Dihydrogen

i.Treat a ribbon of Mg with dilute H2SO4

Mg(s)+dil H2SO4 MgSO4(aq)+H2(g)

ii. Pure Dihydrogen can also be produced by electrolyzing a warm solution of Ba(OH)2

using inert electrodes.

iii. Also by oxidation of NaH by water.

The mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen is called water gas. (Co+H2)

Water gas.

Water gas is used in the preparation of

methanol and other hydrocarbons. Water

gas is also called syngas or synthesis

gas

The process of producing syngas from coal is called coal gasification. C(s) +H2O(g) Co(g) +H2(g)

Water gas shift reaction. When carbon monoxide of syngas mixtures react with steam in the presence of iron chromate as catalyst, the production of Dihydrogen increases.
