BASIC STRUCTURE

OF BERYLLIUM NITRATE

BERYLLIUM Beryllium was first discovered by Abbé René-Just Hauy in 1798.

Beryllium is a Block S, Group 2, Period 2 element Electronic Configuration is [He] 2s2

Beryllium atom has a radius of 111.3.pm and it's Van der Waals radius is 200.pm

ANOMALOUS BEHAVIOUR OF BERYLLIUM Be is extermly small and small highly

charged ions tend to form covalent compounds.

Be has a comparatively high electro negativity

Be is in the second row of the periodic table and the outer shell can hold a maximum of 8 electrons.

Be can form a maximum of 4 conventional electron pair bonds.

BERYLLIUM NITRATE

Molecular Formula: Be(NO3)2

Vapour Pressure: 49.8 mmHg at 25°C IUPAC Name: Beryllium dinitrate Structure of Beryllium nitrate

PREPARATION Nitrates of the metals can be prepared

in solution and can be crystallized as hydrated salts by reaction of HNO3 with carbonates, oxides or hydroxides.

Anhydrous nitrates can be prepared using liquid dinitrogen tetroxide and ethyl acetate.

Be is unusual in that it forms a basic nitrate in addition to the normal salt.

Basic Beryllium nitrate is covalent has an unusual structure.

BE atoms are located at the corners of a tetrahedron.

With six NO3- groups

along the six edges of the tetrahedon, and (basic) oxygen at the centre.

NO3- act as bidentate

ligands.

The Be atom electron configuration: 1s22s2

In the ground state, there are no unpaired electrons (the Be atom is incapable of forming a covalent bond with a fluorine atom

However, the Be atom could obtain an unpaired electron by promoting an electron from the 2s orbital to the 2p orbital:

This would actually result in two unpaired electrons, one in a 2s orbital and another in a 2p orbital

The Be atom can now form two covalent bonds with fluorine atoms

We would not expect these bonds to be identical (one is with a 2s electron orbital, the other is with a 2p electron orbital)

USES Beryllium nitrate trihydrate is commonly used to make mantles for gas lamps.

Beryllium nitrate trihydrate also can be used as chemical reagent and in nanoparticles and in nanopowder

TYPES OF HAZARD / EXPOSURE

ACUTE HAZARDS / SYMPTOMS

PREVENTION FIRST AID / FIRE FIGHTING

FIRE Not combustible but enhances combustion of other substances. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.

In case of fire in the surroundings: use appropriate extinguishing media.

EXPLOSION

EXPOSURE PREVENT DISPERSION OF DUST! AVOID ALL CONTACT

IN ALL CASES CONSULT A DOCTOR

Inhalation Cough. Shortness of breath. Sore throat. Symptoms may be delayed

Closed system and ventilation.

Fresh air, rest. Refer for medical attention.

Skin Redness. Protective gloves. Protective clothing.

Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse skin with plenty of water or shower. Refer for medical attention

Eyes Redness. Pain. Face shield or eye protection in combination with breathing protection.

First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.

Ingestion Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work. Wash hands before eating.
