GREEN NOTE: by Jeanine Lindberg Did you know that America leads the world in food waste? This is mostly because, according to The Atlantic publication, we're very picky eaters. The foods we choose to buy, especially produce items, have to be perfect with no bruises, discolorations or a weird shape. In fact, grocers tend to refuse a vendor's imperfect foods or throw them away if they do enter the store. In addition, The Guardian reports that a lot of food isn't even harvested. It's either left to rot in the fields or carted off to a landfill. It's estimated that about a third of all foods end up being thrown away. Maybe you chucked out a banana because the skin turned brown. Or, that last slice of bread got tossed because, well, it was simply the last slice of bread. We can do better than this. Only buy what you think you'll use. Don't overlook imperfect fruits and vegetables. Surprise the family by using that old banana to make some awesome banana bread. That last slice of bread could easily be turned into croutons for your salad. If you're in the restaurant business, consider donating surplus food to the food bank or a soup kitchen. These small efforts will help keep tons of perfectly good food out of landfills. THANK YOU, ESTABROOK/COLEMAN PLACE VOLUNTEERS! A good group of folks came out on Saturday, November 19 to help pick up litter for the Estabrook Adopt-a-Spot program and to help collect and transport items for America Recycles Day. Many thanks to Diana Lionetti, Claudia Graham, Kathy Sheridan, Janis Carney, Ken Carney, John Lind-berg, Carolyn Foca, Bill Jackson, Fred Gallup, Barbara Marchewka and Jeanine Lindberg.

They are in need of non-perishable items including peanut butter, canned veggies, canned fruits, etc. Make sure to check the Expiration Date on the can, please no outdated ones or ones expiring in the next few months. We will continue
to collect for the Foodbank till be break for the summer.
THANK YOU TO ALL WHO HAVE DONATED, IT IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!
What do I do with all these leaves in my yard? Never rake or blow leaves into streets, ditches, marshes or storm drains.
Leaves for disposal should be placed in clear plastic yard bags and put at the curb, not in the street, on your trash collection day.
Only place leaves and other yard debris at the curbside on the designated pickup day.
Mow over your leaves to create finely chopped mulch and then leave them in place. You’ll love how easy it is and your lawn will love the mulch!
Put your fallen leaves into your compost bin. Come spring, your garden will be thankful for the fertile
soil.
Never blow or rake your leaves into the storm drain. They can clog the pipes and cause street flood-
ing; they can decay, sending excess nutrients into our waterways, causing algal blooms that can
choke the waterways and harm fish.

Spring Bulb Fundraiser
Diane has registered the ECL in a Spring bulb fundraiser. It's a completely online fund-raiser with Dutch Mill Bulbs to order daffodil and tulip bulbs plus a few other choices. Everything is $8. All we would need to do is share the link with anyone who may want to plant some bulbs this fall for spring flowers. They place their orders and pay through the link and their purchase is delivered directly to them. After the end of each month thru November, Dutch Bulbs will calculate the total of all orders placed for the month from our link and mail a check for 50% of the sales to the civic league.
Here is the link if you want to look at what's available and the prices. http://groups.dutchmillbulbs.com/estabrookcivicleague.php

One is known as gable-top or refrigerated cartons such as juice and milk cartons that are not waxed. The other is known as shelf-stable or aseptic boxes. These include juice boxes, broth or stock boxes and small wine boxes. Caps are okay, straws are not. No need to flatten the cartons. They're easier to sort if they retain their shape.
