Adopted “magnet” programs to encourage voluntary desegrega-tion of schools

Received unitary status from the federal court – no longer obligated to follow race-based admission

Redefined magnet programs as “choice” programs based on student interest and aptitude

Streamlinedprograms

Introduced and expanded selected programs as “Specialty Programs”

Continued expansion of Specialty Programs

Strategy Team

The Strategy Team for Specialty Programs is working to develop a five-year proposal that will include:

• Monitoring and implementation strategies

• Identification of the infrastructure needed to support high school programs (feeder pattern)

• Recommendations based on the research of new models

5

Specialty Programs Today…

• Provide options in addition to the comprehensive curriculum

• Are designed to address the needs and interests of students and parents

• Allow for exploration and development of interests, while following state and school system mandates

Two Types of Specialty Programs

School-Based (In-Boundary)

• Whole school program; every child within the school boundary participates
