SCHOOL VISION:
East Bentleigh Primary School provides a rich, inviting, child-focused
environment ensuring that all students feel safe and stimulated. Our students are
able to achieve their full academic, creative and social potential, equipped for the
challenges of lifelong learning. Students develop into healthy and confident
individuals, actively contributing to the world in which they live.
Hello everyone,
I can’t believe that when this newsletter goes out there will be only effectively 5
weeks left of school for 2018. We have a few very busy weeks coming up at our
school.
We are well into our 2019 Prep transition program and Saturday 24th November will
see our school being used as a polling booth for the state election, as well as
hosting our monthly Bentleigh Farmers’ Market from 8am till 12:30pm.
End of year class performances will begin soon. Sue and I are really looking forward
to attending these performances over the next few weeks and watching the
culmination of many weeks’ work by your children and their teachers.
I hope you have noted down all the remaining important dates from the calendar -
there are so many of them - especially the ‘Founding Fathers and The Band- Shes’
concert. Tickets are available through TryBooking or in person/by phone at the
office. It is important we have an idea of numbers for catering purposes, so if you
are planning to attend, now is the time to purchase your tickets.
Student Leaders at Remembrance Ceremony
Last Friday I accompanied our fabulous student leaders to the Bentleigh RSL to take
part in Remembrance Day. They were terrific ambassadors for our school. Thank you
Summer, Hilel, Elly and Hila. I was very proud of you all.
“Last Friday, Mrs Shearn, the school captains and vice captains attended the memorial ceremony
at the RSL. It was a very solemn event, however, it was still enjoyable. At the ceremony, flowers
and wreaths were placed on the shrine and all of us paid our respects. After the ceremony, we made
our way to the RSL for a delicious morning tea. It was a memorable experience and we thank all
the soldiers who fought for our country.”

in the New Year.
Parent / Helpers’ morning tea On Thursday 6th December at 10:30 am, the staff will provide a special morning tea to all
our wonderful helpers at our school. We are very lucky at East Bentleigh Primary School to have so many school
community members prepared to give up some of their time. I know not all of you will be able to come, so I would like
to take this opportunity to thank all those people who have given their time and expertise to help support our school in
any way at all throughout the year. Your efforts are all very much appreciated
by everyone in the East Bentleigh Primary School community. ** Thought **

Sue’s News
Student Leaders attend School Council meeting
Our Student Leaders attended School Council on Monday night. They introduced themselves and spoke about their
achievements in 2018. We had representatives from the following leadership positions:
School Captains and Vice – Hilel, summer, Hila and Elly
House Captains – Milly and Jessie
Junior School Council – Jamia and Eliza
Digital Technology – Dia and Oum
Environmental – Amelia and Sunny
Music – Honami
Library - Manu
The Student Leaders described their role, talked about their achievements and what they enjoyed doing the most
and suggested some improvements for next year. They then asked the School Council questions about:
What they do?
How are you elected?
How often do you meet?
Who runs the meetings?
How do you solve difficult decisions?
It was a very rewarding experience for both our Student Leaders and School Councillors.

MUSIC NEWS Dear Parents,
As 2018 comes to a close we have a few musical events happening shortly that you will need to be aware of.
Following the Grade 2 information session on Wednesday 14th November, the Grade 2’s will be trialling Violin,
Viola and Cello so that we are able to get a rough idea of allocations for teachers next year. Students are
able to change their minds of course as there is a long time between November and the beginning of Term 1
next year, however it allows us plan accordingly.
This will happen in the morning session of Wednesday 21st November.
We have the Steiner Orchestra Concert on 29th of November which features Steiner Instrumental students
from Grade 3 - 6 and the Extension Orchestra.
The students will be performing with their class to showcase what they have been working on during the year.
The night will begin at 6pm and we hope to run it as smoothly as possible to ensure that we finish in a timely
manner.
Students will need to be at school no later than 5:45pm in full school uniform so we can start on time.
The Founding Fathers Concert is the following night at 5:30pm. Please come and support this wonderful event
which really helps provide so much for our school and celebrates the talent of our parents too. Tickets are
available at the school office or www.trybooking.com/YLZG
Monday 10th of December is our final Soirée for 2018. We will be showcasing the individual talents of some of
our wonderful students. Please let us know as soon as possible if you would like to have your child perform, first
in best dressed as time is limited.
2019
As we go into planning for next year please if you have any queries or concerns come and see me and we
can look into trying to make your child’s music studies as positive as possible. Communication is key and
sometimes your students have concerns that they may be too shy to tell us in person. Please do not leave
issues to fester over the holidays as we want to start the year afresh and in the best way possible for your
students.
I am in every day at school or you can contact me via email: felicitecheine@gmail.com
Following the great initiatives in sustainability around the school the Instrumental Music Team will be shifting to
paperless communication and the practice book will not be used next year.
We will all be communicating via email only, so we will be setting this up over the break so please make sure
to check your Inboxes and Junk Mail Folders for our emails.

Year Ones visit to The Royal Botanical Gardens On Friday 26 October all the Year One Children and their teachers and parent helpers set out for a wonderful adventure in
the magical realm of The Royal Botanical Gardens. Our day began with a morning snack on the lawns surrounded by the
Banana Palms and old growth trees. Each class was then greeted by a guide who invited us to don our imaginary magic
gloves that would assist us to gently explore the touch and texture of the myriad of plants we would encounter. Each guide
told the children stories along our journey about some of the special plants of the gardens, including the story of ‘The
Grandmother Tree’, a 10,000 year old Red River Gum tree that became fossilised in the Murray River, and the ‘Lightning
Tree’, which was lovingly repaired by the staff after it was hit by lightning and carries the scar. Around the roots of the tree
were many little openings reminiscent of fairy doors.
The children loved the fragrant herb garden where they were encouraged to crush and smell the herbs and search for
things that smelled like toothpaste, liquorice and lemon. Beautiful pot pourri bags were created by each child from
generous baskets of lavender, rose petals and lemon verbena.
In the Children’s Garden we scrambled through mossy tunnels and over rocky bridges, finishing at the tree palace. In this
magical space we created flower and leaf crowns from reeds and resources found in the gardens.
Our day finished with lunch, observed closely by a very friendly kookaburra, followed by a riveting and timely tale told by
parent Chris in 1S about Hans and his adventures with his magic hat. Chris cleverly incorporated one of our flower crowns
into this retelling.
A wonderful day was had by everyone.
Some comments from the children……..
‘This was the very best day of my life. Can we please come back again’? – Siena 1A
‘I loved smelling the pot pourri and making my flower crown’. - Lia 1A
‘I love it here, there is so much space and grass and they don’t mind if I do a somersault’. - Conan 1A
‘We made flower crowns and used plants and flowers we found on the ground, it was really fun. My favourite part was see-
ing the big trees’. - Catherine 1M
‘We learnt some plants are used for medicine’ - Isabella 1M
‘My favourite part was when we climbed the River Red Gum and we saw a kookaburra’. - Finn 1S
‘My favourite part was making crowns and pot pourri’. - Mirrin 1S
