The Principles of Design

ContrastA principle of design that refers to

differences in values, colors, textures, and other elements to achieve emphasis

and interest.

UnityA principle of design that relates to

the sense of onenessor wholeness in a work of art.

PatternA principle of design in which

combinations of lines, colors and shapesare used to show real or imaginary things.Pattern may also be achieved by repeating

a shape, line or color.

RepetitionA principle of design in which objects, lines, colors or shapes

are used more than once in a composition.

EmphasisA principle of design by whichthe artist or designer may use

opposing sizes, shapes, contrasting colors, or other means to place greater attention on certain areas, objects, or feelings in a

work of art.

BalanceA principle of design that refers to

the visual equalization of elements ina work of art. Balance may be either

formal, informal or radial.

MovementA principle of design that refers to

the arrangement of parts in a work of artto create a slow to fast movement of

one’s eye through the work.

GRADATION

The gradual change of an element. Slowly changing in value, color, texture, etc.
