Bronze GearsOne of the first requirements when installing a steel roller
cam is the addition of a bronze distributor gear. A stock castiron gear is not compatible with a steel camshaft. COMPCams® gears are machined from AMPCO-45 extrudedaluminum bronze with 5% Nickel added. These gears featurea high-strength tooth design that resists wear even whenused with high pressure oil pumps. These extra tough gearsare the answer when higher mechanical properties aredemanded.

The lifter is one of the most critical pieces in an enginecombination. Whether it be mechanical or hydraulic, flat tappetor roller, the lifter determines how the camshaft will react to thebalance of the engine combination. As operating rangeincreases, lifter and valve float become serious considerations.Increased spring pressure can sometimes be the answer, butmore often than not, the ability of the lifter to manage the load isthe key to success or valve train failure. COMP Cams® offers allof the popular lifter designs, and COMP Cams®’ CAMHELP®
personnel can help with the all important lifter decision.
Early overhead valve engine designs utilized the hydraulictappet to quiet valve train noise. High RPM was never aconsideration, nor was longevity. An engine from the mid-fiftiesto early sixties seldom saw anywhere near 100,000 miles in itslife span. Competition engines were virtually unknown, and“street” performance had not yet surfaced. Excessive oilingclearances in valve lifters, then known as “tappets” because ofthe noise that they made, was not even a consideration. Carbuilders were more concerned with controlling engine noisesthan engine efficiency. Solid or mechanical lifters became thetappet of choice by allowing the engine to rev higher withoutfloating the valve train. Valve lash could be controlled or adjustedas necessary to optimize the available torque curve.
The advent of precision machining capabilities in massproduction gave the aftermarket the first opportunities to buildperformance hydraulic lifters. Closer tolerances in metering andoil control allowed us to create a lifter that allowed more or lesscompression of the internal plunger in the lifter. There were twoopposing schools of thought here. On one hand, a softer lifterwas considered best, because it allowed the plunger tocompress under sudden heavy loading, preventing binding andover-acceleration of the valve train. The other theory was thattightened control in the lifter allowed the valve train to respondquicker. The increased volume of oil under the plunger thenbecame a mechanical “wedge” to more closely resemble amechanical valve train. Both assumptions were correct, and bothhad their place, even though they achieved totally oppositeresults. But, this was the beginning of fine-tuning and openedthe door to better technology.
The perfection or utilization of the needle bearing gave us thepractical application of the roller lifter. Cam lobe designers hadfor some time visualized that longer, wider ramps would allowincreased performance by allowing for greater cylinder fillingand better exhaust flow. Unfortunately, flat bottom lifters wereforced to maintain a somewhat narrow contact patch on thecamshaft or lifter failure would occur.
The roller tip followed the cam profile several degrees longer, allowing the lifter to continue controlling valve motion beyondthe capabilities of the flat tappet lifter. Immediate performancegains were recognized from essentially the same camshaftspecifications. Radically increased performance was only a smallstep away. This became possible through the increased valvesprings pressures that were now feasible with mechanical liftersthat did not scrub the surface of the camshaft as much.Introduction of steel, rather than cast or ductile iron camshaftcores opened the door to even greater spring pressures.
Hydraulic rollerprogression wassomewhat slower, becausethe hydraulic mechanism prevented excessive spring pressuresand excessive ramp speeds. The thought was that hydraulicperformance was of little benefit combined with a roller tip lifter. The major auto manufacturers would be the ones to change thisperception. As engines began to see 150,000 to 200,000 miles, durability became a problem. The basic flat tappet cam becamea weak link the modern overhead valve engine configuration.Roller cams created less friction and lasted much longer whilemaking the engine combination more efficient. The hydraulicroller has become the final link in the evolution of the overheadvalve engine that so many of us have utilized for ourperformance vehicles over the past 50 years. The next time youlook at the long list of available options of lifter types and styles, think back and appreciate the advancement in valve traintechnology.

High Energy™ HydraulicsNot all hydraulic lifters are created equal! The use of High
Energy™ Hydraulic lifters gives you advantages not found inother brands of lifters.
Our lifters have a patented constant orifice metering valve thatprecisely meters oil to the rocker arms. Continuous contactbetween the metering valve and the precisely coined bottomsurface of the pushrod seat is maintained throughout the enginesrpm range, eliminating excessive oiling at high speeds.
The pushrod seat is made of a special powdered metal ironalloy and heat treated for strength and wear resistance.
COMP Cams® High Energy™ Hydraulic Lifters are producedwith a longer piston than conventional hydraulic lifters. The extralength is made possible from a counter-bored pushrod seatposition. The longer piston is produced with through - hardenedsteel that provides more bearing surface, and increased lifterlongevity.
High Energy™ Lifters have a light weight check valve disc thatallows for quicker response. This results in increases in enginespeed before valve float. This check valve also maintains addedcontrol at all engine speeds and loads. Increases in engine speedcan be attributed to this quicker response check valve.
Don’t take the chance of voiding cam warranties and losingpower by using other brands of lifters!
It is not necessary to “pre-pump” hydraulic lifters full of engine oil prior to installation and valve adjustment. It is actuallyUNDESIRABLE to do so as the “pumped up” lifters will cause the valves to open during the adjustment process, rather thanpositioning the valve lifter plunger in its operating position as it is supposed to do. “Pre-soaking” hydraulic lifters in a bath of engineoil is a good idea, but it is not mandatory. It does ensure that the lifters are adequately lubricated on their outer surfaces prior toinstallation in the engine. It may also result in a quieter engine start up as the oil in the bath may displace some air from the lifter’splunger reservoir.

Pro Magnum HydraulicCOMP Cams®’ Pro Magnum Hydraulic Lifters™ are specifically
designed to perform at higher engine speeds. When engines areequipped with a hydraulic camshaft, high rpm is limited by theimproper position of the internal piston as the lifter inevitably“pumps up”. This improper location results in open valves andtherefore leads to lost power or sometimes evenengine failure.
COMP Cams®’ Pro Magnum Hydraulic Lifters™ offer a distinctadvantage over standard high performance hydraulic lifters, especially in race applications where a hydraulic lifter must beused. When tested in a Chevrolet 468 ci Big Block, the powerincrease was significant (See chart below).

Pro Magnum HydraulicHigh Performance Hydraulic Roller Lifters
COMP Cams® Pro Magnum Hydraulic Roller Lifters™ are specifi-cally designed to perform at higher engine speeds. When enginesare equipped with a hydraulic camshaft, high rpm is limited by theimproper position of the internal piston as the lifter inevitably“pumps up”. This improper location results in open valves andtherefore leads to lost power or sometimes even engine failure.
All COMP Cams® roller lifters are shipped with grease coatingon the outside shell to prevent rust, and a thick grease in theroller bearing to keep the needles in place during assembly. Priorto installing the lifters in an engine, it is important to wash all ofthe grease from the lifter and bearing with a suitable solvent ormineral spirits. After blowing the parts dry, totally immerse thelifter in fresh 30W engine oil for 30 minutes. This willENSURE that the entire roller bearing is filled with oil. Afterinstalling the lifters, try not to let the engine sit for an extendedperiod of time prior to startup to minimize the amount of oil thatdrains out of the bearing.

HI-TECH MECHANICAL ROLLER LIFTERS

Super Roller LiftersThe lifter is the immediate link between the cam and the rest
of the valve train. It must be built tough to endure thesledgehammer-like pounding of engine speeds above 10,000rpm. This is not a problem for COMP Cams®
Super Roller Lifters. After all, we engineered them to withstandmuch harsher conditions than these.
Today’s high horsepower engines are becoming increasingly hostile environments. In an effort to squeeze outevery last ounce of power, our engineers are designing radicallobes with steep ramps that accelerate lifters at extremely highrates. Keeping this acceleration in check requires incrediblevalve spring pressures—sometimes as high as 1000 lbs.—orthe lifter will be launched off the lobe, causing valve float andultimate engine destruction!
Our patented link bar design eliminates the problemsassociated with other companies’ riveted button link bars.
Our roller wheel will stand up to the abuse because it is madefrom an exotic steel Nickel alloy, far superior to the ordinary ballbearing steel our competitors use. Our bodies are fully heat-treated machined to a tolerance of ±.0002”!
Small base circle and offset designs are available for somespecial applications.
Most Super Roller Lifters have a unique patented link barsystem which blends all the advantages and interchangeability ofa removable link bar with the safety of a captured link bar. Justturn the link bar parallel to the lifter, line up the button on thelifter with the hole in the link bar, snap in and turn 90°. Once inthe engine, if the pushrod or some other part fails, the liftersremain attached to each other, preventing other damage.
• Superior performance & durability• Special patented design• Race proven• Chromemoly heat-treated axle• Small base circle & offsets available• Edge orifice type oil metering
Part #841
All COMP Cams® roller lifters are shipped with grease coatingon the outside shell to prevent rust, and a thick grease in theroller bearing to keep the needles in place during assembly. Priorto installing the lifters in an engine, it is IMPORTANT towash all of the grease from the lifter and bearing with a suitablesolvent or mineral spirits. After blowing the parts dry, totallyimmerse the lifter in fresh 30W engine oil for 30 minutes or so.This will ensure that the entire roller bearing is filled with oil. After installing the lifters, try not to let the engine sit for anextended period of time prior to startup to minimize the amountof oil that drains out of the bearing.

LIFTER REBUILD PROGRAM
291
Super Roller LifterRebuild ProgramRebuilt Roller Lifters go through the following steps:• Lifter bodies are disassembled and inspected for cracks.• Retaining grooves are inspected and cleaned.• Lifter bodies are thoroughly washed.• A new axle and roller assembly is pressed into the body, and
new retaining clips are installed.• Lifters are re-boxed and returned to the customer.
800-RB1-1 Rebuild - all w/ .750 diameter wheel800-RB2-1 Rebuild - all w/ .800 diameter wheel
Roller Lifters in today’s performance engine environments facegrueling punishment on every lap. Inadequate oiling, excessivespring pressures, excessive valve lash and many other factorsplay a significant part in the failure of the roller, the needlebearings and the axle. COMP Cams® recognizes the high cost ofnew parts, and has designed the Super Lifter Rebuild Program tohelp offset some of the high cost of replacement parts.
The roller assembly is most often the culprit in roller lifterfailure. The body of the lifter can be buffed and the link barsreplaced as necessary. However, the roller, bearings and axleusually need to be replaced after each season of use, or afterany catastrophic engine failure. The sudden lack of motion iseven more destructive than the sudden application of motion. Itpays to have your lifters inspected and rebuilt on a regular basis.
Contact your COMP Cams® CAM HELP® representative to returnyour lifters for reconditioning as necessary. You will be charged amodest fee to replace worn or damaged parts, and replacementlifters may be purchased to replace defective or destroyed lifters. This is often much less than one-half the cost of new lifters andassures long, trouble free operation.
