REGULAR MEETING PROCEDURES
1.1 PRIOR TO OPENING
MASTER
Check with the Secretary to ensure that there are no last minute items of
business or changes, e.g. UGLQ business, apologies of key Officers or
members, bereavements etc.
Arrange with the D.C. to appoint Brethren to replace last minute member
apologies.
Informally greet and welcome visitors.
SECRETARY
Arrive early and arrange minutes, correspondence etc.
Check with the J.W. and list Festive Board accounts.
Brief the Master on matters of general business.
TREASURER
Arrive early and receive payment of Lodge dues.
Ensure Treasurer’s report & accounts for payment list is ready for
presentation.
DIRECTOR OF CEREMONIES
Arrange with the Master to appoint Brethren to replace last minute
member apologies.
Informally greet and welcome visitors and arrange for any “tests”
necessary.
9
Ensure the Lodge is properly laid out for the Degree or work for the night,
and include checking that equipment is available for any proposed ballots.
Check air conditioning settings.
TYLER
Organize visitors into appropriate Groups e.g. Lodge groups etc.
Arrange for appropriate tests of unknown members.
Have readily available suitable EA and FC aprons.
Ensure all clothing items needed for the degree work are available.
INNER GUARD
Always keep the curtains closed.
When checking if the Lodge is properly tyled, first knock with the
appropriate knocks of the degree. (When opening in the first degree
because the lodge is not open use one knock only).
When opening in the different degrees the instruction is to “See if the
Lodge is properly tyled” so after the knocks are answered by the Tyler,
partially open the door (or use the viewing hole) to check the Tyler is in
attendance.
When closing in the different degrees the instruction is to “Prove the Lodge
is close tyled” so after the knocks are answered by the Tyler, advise the JW
that the Tyler is in attendance – (don’t open the door as the knocks are
considered proof the Tyler is in attendance.)
DEACONS
Work done in the first degree is usually the responsibility of the JD with
support of the SD. Work done in the second and third degree is the
responsibility of the SD supported by the JD.
When crossed wands in the first degree the JD’s wand is in front. In the
second and third degree the SD’s wand is in front.
10
SCOTIA SHUFFLE
The “Scotia Shuffle” - as a general policy all lodge perambulating moves
(either forward or reverse) should commence with the left foot. In the
Shuffle both Deacons should take a pace backwards with the left foot. The
Deacon to the Candidate’s left (this will normally be the north side unless
the candidate is facing the SW e.g. for the Final Charge), pauses while the
other deacon takes a second pace backwards. Both Deacons take 2 side
steps so they pass behind the Candidate. The Deacon who has passed from
the Candidates left to right pauses while the other Deacon takes on pace
forward and then they both take another pace forward to be in alignment
with the Candidate. Some team practice by both the Deacons should sort
out timing and give some precision to the shuffle.
WARDENS
When perambulating around the Lodge room the WSW should either be on
the inside or closest to the WM i.e. to the east. This policy is not observed
when moving forward for the Obligation as it is more convenient for the
SW to stay to the north.
When assembling for the secrets the WSW should always be positioned to
the east of the WJW.
GENERAL NOTES
Remembering the Knocks and Pass Words
Degree Format Ade memoir Degree Initial Pass Word
First 3 evenly spaced 3 pence (3 cents) F F_B_A_O_G_R_
Second 1 + 2 1&2 pence (12 cents) S S__
Third 2 + 1 2 & a penny (21 cents) T T_ C_
We often hear the term “Sitting Master”. This is incorrect, the reference
should always Wor. Master or Master.
11
STANDING TO ORDER WHEN ADDRESSING THE WOR
MASTER
It is usual practice in Scotia Lodge when addressing the Wor Master or
being addressed by him, to hold the Salute (stand to order) until the
conversation is complete. This may not be practical in all cases as the
Secretary and Treasurer often need to shuffle papers and the whole
presentation can look messy. Also if a Bro is giving a long report it may be
convenient for the Wor Master to drop the sign which is followed by the
Bro.
Signs are not used when addressing other Officers apart from the Wor
Master. (E.g. the Tyler does not salute the WJW).
ALL MEMBERS
Meet and welcome visitors and ensure that they are not left alone.
Dress (apron & jewels etc.) and sign the attendance book.
If an Officer of the Lodge, ensure correct regalia and emblems are
available for your office.

INITIATIONS, PASSINGS AND RAISINGS
NEW AGSW
If there is a new AGSW visiting for the first time, he will advise the Master
or the Director of Ceremonies that he wishes to formally enter the Lodge
prior to the opening. Adopt the following procedure, unless the AGSW
advises differently.
After the visiting Masters and Past Masters have been invited to the East
and prior to the formal opening:-
The D.C. goes to the door to check the AGSW is ready. The D.C.
and the AGSW both move to the NE corner of the Lodge (D.C. on
the S side). Note, no degree signs are given. The D.C. then
introduces the New AGSW to the Master (include the AGSW’s
full title e.g. V.W. Bro. --- AGSW for the No --- District). The
AGSW then moves into the E where Master shakes his hand,
welcomes him into the Lodge Scotia and invites him to the Festive
Board and also invites him to sit on the Master’s right.
The AGSW will usually respond with a short address and be seated. The
D.C. then returns to his place and the normal opening procedure for the
First Degree is continued.

(The motion Proposer stands, salutes the W.M. and reads the notice of
motion. The motion is seconded by a Brother of the Lodge. The Brother
who moved the motion then speaks to the motion and is supported by the
Brother who seconded it. General discussion then takes place. The brother
who moved the motion has the opportunity to speak a second time prior to
13
the putting of the motion. As a general rule other Brethren should only
speak once to the motion. Amendments to the motion may be put and these
should be considered prior to the putting of the motion. If amendments are
passed they become the motion.)

1.5.4 INSTRUCTIONS TO THE CANDIDATE AFTER
HIS FIRST DEGREE - EXAMPLE
(In Lodge Scotia, at an appropriate time after a Candidate’s degree the
DC supported by other senior members, should advise the Candidate of
specific activities associated with Lodge procedure and protocol and also
to pick up on items of the ceremony that may need further practice or
explanation e.g. signs and words etc. For this reason they need to be ad
lib. and informal. This is an example of the type of information which is
appropriate to be covered in the First Degree.)
Explain the K...s of this degree. They are t.... in n.... spaced evenly apart.
(Demonstrate) When you hear those knocks, you will know that the lodge
is working in the first degree.
When coming to lodge you will see the T... , the brother outside the door of
the lodge, and request an apron. Yours is the all white one.
Upon arrival, you will sign your name in the attendance book in the
members' area. After your name, you will put the initials E.A. which
signify E.......A..... When visiting another lodge you will sign in the
visitor’s area of their attendance book in the same way, but it is customary
to put your lodge name and number. Sometimes you have to abbreviate
because of the amount of room.
When entering some lodges you will be challenged for the word and grip of
an EA. However, as a Lodge Scotia member you will use the words, F....
18
B...& of G..... R..... (and not the word) along with the pass grip. Having
done this you will move straight to the W just in front of the SW's pedestal,
give the sign to the WM and move to your seat.
Remember when moving about the lodge, take care to always square it and
always in a clockwise direction.
When you are leaving the lodge you will move to the W in front of the SW
pedestal again, face the WM, give the sign and leave directly by the NW
door.
Rehearse the sign and grip to assist the Candidate to remember them. Also
advise him on standing to order while addressing or being addressed by the
WM.
It is customary in this lodge, whenever you are on your feet e.g. opening
and closing the lodge, to stand with you right hand over your heart.
(Demonstrate)
Explain the major officers of the lodge. In the E (gesture) is the WM. In
the W is the SW and in the S is the JW.
Tell him his place is in the NE part of the lodge. This is the area where the
secretary's table is, so just sit as near to that as you can.
1.6 FESTIVE BOARD
(The success of the Festive Board is the responsibility of all Lodge Scotia
members. However, the Junior Warden [supported by the Stewards] is the
officer charged with the “supervision” of the Brethren when at
refreshment. This means that he is responsible for ensuring that adequate
food and drinks are provided and prepared for the Festive Board. This
also means that if he is not going to be present at the meeting, he makes
appropriate prior arrangements to ensure another Brother is deputizing
for him in this important area, so that the Lodge is not embarrassed by
being unprepared to host its visitors.)
Commencing from the end of the table on the Master’s left side:-

Will ye no come back again?
Better loved ye canna be,
Will ye no come back again?
1.6.4 AFTER THE FESTIVE BOARD
( After the Festive Board, it is important to remember that the Lodge is
responsible for leaving the lodge room and festive board room clean and
configured according to the directions of the Masonic Centre
management. This is the responsibility of all lodge members and while
there will be occasions when members may need to leave early and not be
able to assist in this work, members should remember that they need to do
their share and not leave all the cleaning up to a dedicate few. Younger
members and junior Office Bearers should be particularly aware of their
responsibility in this area. Installation night is usually a late night with a
larger “cleanup” requirement and a greater effort by all members to assist
in this task is required.)
2
INSTALLATION
2.1 ELECTION OF WM & OFFICERS
24
MASTER
(This occurs 2 months prior to the installation)
W.M. W.Bro. Secretary, (Secretary stands and salutes) what is our next
business?
W.BRO. SEC Election of the Wor. Master for the ensuing year, W.M.
W.M. W.Bro. Secretary, you will place the “Roll of Members” on the
altar.
(The Secretary places the “Roll of Members” on the altar. Members
eligible to be elected are all Past Masters, the current Master if he has not
served as Master for the last 2 years and any brother who has served as a
Warden for 12 months.)
W.M. W.Bro. Secretary, you will state the names of those Brethren
eligible for election.
(As each Brother’s name is called if he does not wish to be considered for
election he stands, salutes and declines nomination. Once all eligible
Brethren have been called, if there is only one brother who has not
declined nomination, the WM declares him Wor. Master elect for the
ensuing 12 months. If more than one brother has not declined the W.M.
appoints two Brethren to act as scrutineers to conduct a secret ballot. It is
usual to invite {where possible} visiting P.M.s to undertake this task. The
W.M. requests that the scrutineers only provide him with the name of the
successful Brother and not the voting results. The WM then declares the
successful brother Wor. Master elect for the ensuing 12 months. After the
end of the election, it should be moved and seconded that the scrutineers
destroy the means of ballot and keep the specific results of the ballot
confidential.)
W.M. Bro./W.Bro. …….(Master elect) Have you decided who you would
like to act as Installing Master?
(The Master elect advises the Wor Bro. he wishes to conduct the
Installation Ceremony. The W Bro. Secretary then retrieves the “Roll of
Members” from the Altar.)
25
OFFICERS
(This occurs the month prior to the Installation)
W.M. W.Bro. Secretary, (Secretary stands and salutes) what is our next
business?
W.BRO. SEC Election of the Officers for the ensuing year, W.M.
(At this point the W.M. may appoint two Brethren to act as scrutineers
should the need for a ballot [secret] occur or he may wait for the need to
occur before he makes this appointment. It is usual to invite {where
possible} visiting P.M.s to undertake this task. Otherwise try to select
Brethren with experience who you don’t anticipate will be the subject of a
ballot.)
W.M. W.Bro. Secretary, you will place the “Roll of Members” and the
“Book of Accounts “on the altar.
(The Secretary places the “Roll of Members” and the “Book of Accounts”
on the altar.
W.M. I now call nominations for the position of --- (the following
positions in order):-
Senior Warden
Junior Warden
Chaplain
Treasurer
Secretary
Assistant Secretary
Director of Ceremonies
Senior Deacon
Junior Deacon
Assistant Director of Ceremonies
Almoner
Organist (may be appointed)
Inner Guard
President of Stewards
Stewards
26
Tyler (may be appointed)
Auditors (two required)
W.M. Are there any further nominations? (Pause.) Are there any further
nominations? (Pause, W.M. knocks which is followed by the Wardens. I
declare nominations closed and Bro. --- as --- (e.g. Senior warden etc.).
(It is the usual practice for the incumbent of an office [unless it is a
continuous position, such as Secretary] to nominate his replacement first.
This is usually the Brother filling the preceding office. Other Brethren may
then decide to nominate an alternate Bro. and should this happen, a secret
ballot is conducted by the appointed scrutineers.)
(If a ballot is conducted, it is for the W.M. to request that the scrutineers
only provide him with the name of the successful Brother and not the
voting results. After the end of the election of Officers, it should be moved
and seconded that the scrutineers destroy the means of ballot and keep the
specific results of the various ballots confidential.)
2. 2 Prior to Installation
MASTER
Check with the Secretary to see there are no last minute items of business
or changes, e.g. UGLQ business, apologies of key officers or members,
bereavements etc.
MASTER ELECT
Many months prior to your anticipated election as Master Elect, invite a
Past Master to act as Installing Master. This allows the selected PM
adequate time to learn the considerable work required of him.
Prior to the Installation organize your Master’s apron and bring it to the
meeting.
If it is your first time as Wor Master organize your Installation cake. An
installation cake is optional for subsequent terms as WM.
27
Prepare notes for the first time of asking (thank you messages, visitations,
plans for the ensuing year and work etc.) and Festive Board speeches.
Check with the current Master and ascertain who he would like to present
his PM’s Jewell, and advice that Brother so he can prepare a suitable
presentation.
Bring your own V.S.L. to the meeting for presentation (by the Chaplain) to
you.
INSTALLING MASTER
After being requested to be the Installing Master, appoint the Installing
Director of Ceremonies, and between you determine and appoint your
Installation Team (including the Festive Board speech list).
After the election of Officers, examine the effect the various appointments
may have on your Installation Team and organize appropriate personnel
and procedures to overcome apparent problems.
In consultation with the Secretary, arrange an appropriate date for a second
practice.
In consultation with the Master Elect and Secretary, arrange a meeting of
the Installation Committee and organize such matters as the Festive Board
etc.
Arrange with the D.C. to appoint Brethren to replace last minute member
apologies.
SECRETARY
In consultation with the Installing Master, arrange an appropriate date for
a second practice and make the appropriate bookings.
In consultation with the Master Elect and the Installing Master, arrange a
meeting of the Installation Committee and organize such matters as the
Festive Board etc.
Organise Installation invitation cards and Installation booklet.
Organise the P.M’s Jewel and Aged Mason’s Jewel/s.
28
Organise organist, piper and Bro to give the address to the Haggis if
appropriate.
Organize the Haggis if required.
Mark the section of the Minutes, which relates to the election of Master.
INSTALLING DIRECTOR OF CEREMONIES
After being appointed by the Installing Master, determine (in consultation
with him) your Installation Team (including the Festive Board speech list).
After the election of Officers, examine the effect the various appointments
may have on your Installing team and (in consultation with the Installing
Master) organize appropriate personnel and procedures to overcome
apparent problems.
On the day of the meeting ensure the layout of the Lodge as follows:-
Have a chair placed in the SE corner adjacent to the E.O.M.
cabinet.
On that cabinet place the following:-
Master Elect’s apron (belt adjusted) (if not already a PM)
Book of Constitutions (suitably bookmarked)
Deputy D.C.’s baton

Come Brothers of the Craft unite
In general purpose bound,
Let holy love and radiant light
In all our works be found.
Where columns rise in beauteous form,
Untouched by times decay,
We’ll fear no dark or threatening storm
To cloud our passing day.
And as we pass life’s journey e’er,
Though trouble’s waves may rise,
Our faith shall rest on that bright shore
Beyond the changing skies.
Where columns rise in beauteous form
Untouched by time’s decay,
We’ll fear no dark or threatening storm
To cloud our passing day.

Brothers, ere tonight we part,
Join each voice and every heart;

Brothers, we may meet no more,
Yet, there is a happier shore,
Where, released from toil and pain,
Brothers, we shall meet again.

Eventide “ Abide with me.”
Words by Henry Francis Lyte
Abide with me; fast falls the eventide;
The darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide
When other helpers fail, and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, 0 abide with me.
Swift to its close, ebbs out life's little day:
Earth's joys grow dim, its glories pass away;
Change and decay in all -Around I see:
0 Thou who changest not, abide with-me!
I need Thy presence every passing hour;
What but Thy grace can foil the Tempter's power?
38
Who like Thyself my guide and stay can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, 0 abide with me.
I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless;
Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness;
Where is death's sting? Where, grave thy victory?
I triumph still, if Thou abide with me.
I hold Thou Thy Cross before my closing eyes;
Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies;
Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee:
In life, in death, 0 Lord, abide with me!

No art with thee can share -

All people that on earth do dwell,
Sing to the Lord with cheerful voice;
Him serve with mirth, His praise forth tell,
Come ye before Him and rejoice.
Know ye, the Lord is God indeed;
Without our aid He did us make;

We are His flock, He doth us feed;
And for His sheep he doth us take.
O enter, then, His gates with praise;
Approach with joy His courts unto;
Praise, laud, and bless His name always,
For it is seemly so to do.
For why? The Lord our God is good.
His mercy is forever sure;
His truth at all times firmly stood,
And shall from age to age endure.

MEMORIAL SERVICE LODGE OF
SORROW
W.M. Brethren, this evening we are to conduct a short service in
memory of our late Bro ……….
KNOCK, ALL RISE
CHAP. Almighty and Eternal God, Architect and Ruler of the
Universe, we beseech Thee to bless the brethren here
assembled ; especially we would ask Thee to comfort and
support the members of our deceased Brother's family; endure
them with Thy Divine strength, so that time, that great healer of
all human sorrow, may heal their hearts and enable them to
continue to look to Thee for comfort and help at all times, to the
Honour and Glory of Thy Holy Name.
BRN. So mote it be.
D.C. Brethren, please unite in singing the Hymn "O GOD OUR
HELP IN AGES PAST'
1.
O GOD, OUR HELP IN AGES PAST,
0 God, our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,
Our shelter from the stormy blast,
43
And our eternal home.
A thousand ages in Thy sight
are like an evening gone;
Short as the watch that ends the night
Before the rising sun.
Time, like an ever-rolling stream,
Bears all its sons away;
They fly forgotten, as a dream
Dies at the opening day.
0 God, our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,
Lie Thou our guard while troubles last,
And our Eternal Home. Amen.
W.M. Brethren, be seated.
W.M. Reads a short statement of the Lodge activities of our
departed Brother.
W.M. KNOCK, ALL RISE
D.C. Brothers Deacon will assemble in the S.E. and cross wands.
(The Piper will lead the D.C. Deacons and Brother who
collects the cushion with Apron and sprig of acacia, from
the E of M cabinet and move in a slow perambulation once
around lodge and then approach the altar from the west.
The piper stays in the west and the D.C. retums to his
chair leaving the Deacons and the Apron bearer at the
altar).
D.C. Brethren we will sing “LEAD KINDLY LIGHT” (If no
piper available sing Lead Kindly Light during
perambulation).
2.
LEAD, KINDLY LIGHT,
44
Lead, kindly light, amid the encircling gloom
Lead Thou me on!
The night is dark, and I am far from home;
Lead Thou me on!
Keep Thou my feet; I do not ask to see
The distant scene: One step enough for me.
I was not ever thus, nor prayed that Thou
Should'st lead me on.
I loved to choose and see my path, but now
Lead Thou me on!
I loved the garish day, and, spite of fears,
Pride ruled my will: Remember not
past years.
So long Thy power hath blest me, sure it still
Will lead me on
O'er moor and fen, o’er crag and torrent, till
The night is gone;
And with the morn those angel faces smile
Which I have loved long since, and lost
awhile.
PIPER (Unless the Piper is playing the music for the other hymns
he now returns to his place. Otherwise he waits and
returns when the Deacons and Cushion Bearer return. He
doesn’t participate in the removal of the cushion and
apron from the alter).
W.M. Brethren, I crave your attention to a portion of Holy Writ.
CHAP. Reads Psalm 90.
Psalm 90
(A Prayer of Moses the man of God)
45
Lord thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations.
2 Before the mountains were bought forth, or ever thou
hast formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting
to everlasting, thou art God.
3 Thou turnest man to destruction: and sayest. Return, ye
children of men.
4 For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday
when it is passed, and as a watch in the night.
5 Thou carriest them away as with a flood: they are as
asleep: in the morning they are like grass which growth
up.
6 In the morning it flourisheth, and growth up: in the
evening it is cut down and withereth.
7 For we are consumed by thine anger and by thy wrath
are we troubled.
8 Thou has set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins in
the light of thy countenance.
9 For all our days are passed away in thy wrath: we spend
our years as a tale that is told.
10 The days of our years are three-score and ten: and if by
reason of strength they be four-score, yet is their strength
labour and sorrow: for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.
11Who knoweth the power of thine anger? Even according
to thy fear, so is thy wrath.
12 So teach us to number our days that we may apply our
hearts under wisdom.
13 Return O Lord how long? And let it repent thee
concerning thy servants.
14 O satisfy us early with thy mercy: that we may rejoice
and be glad all our days.
15 Make us glad according to the days wherein thou hast
afflicted us, and the years wherein we have seen evil.
16 Let thy work appear unto thy servants, and thy glory
unto thy children.
17 And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us: and
establish thou the work of our hands upon us: yea, the
work of our hands establish thou it.
46
W.M. Brethren be seated.
EULOGY Read by one of the Brethren.
W.M. Knock, all rise.
CHAP. Most Glorious God, Author of all good, and giver of all
mercy, Pour down upon us, Thy sorrowing servants, the
consolation of Thy mercy and strengthen our solemn
engagements with ties of sincere affection.
In the passing of our Brother, may we be reminded of our
own mortality, and have our hearts so drawn towards Thee,
our only refuge in danger and distress, that when the time of
our departure shall come, we may be sustained and
comforted in the dark valley by the sense of Thy gracious
presence, and be able to rejoice in the blessed hope of
unbroken fellowship with the loved and lost in Thine
everlasting Kingdom. So mote it be
D.C. We shall sing the first and last verse of “ROCK OF
AGES”
3.
ROCK OF AGES
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee
Let the water and the blood,
From Thy riven side which flowed,
Be of sin the double cure,
Cleanse me from its guilt and power.
Not the labours of my hands
Can fulfi1 Thy law's demands;
Could my zeal no respite know,
Could my tears for ever flow,
All for sin could not atone:
47
Thou must save, and Thou alone.
Nothing in my hand I bring,
Simply to Thy Cross I cling;
Naked, come to Thee for dress;
Helpless, look to Thee for grace;
Foul, I to the fountain fly;
Wash me, Savior, or I die.
While I draw this fleeting breath,
When my eyelids close in death.
When I soar to worlds unknown,
See Thee on Thy Judgment-Throne:
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee. Amen.
CHAP. Reads Psalm 23
Psalm 23
(A Psalm of David)
The Lord is my shepherd: I shall not want.
2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth
me beside the still waters.
3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of
rightness for his name’s sake.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of
death, I will feel no evil: for thou art with me: thy rod and
thy staff they comfort me.
5 Thou prepares a table before me in the presence of mine
enemies: thou anointest my head with oil: my cup runneth
over.
6 Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of
my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
48
CHAP. Almighty God, Architect and Ruler of the Universe, in Thy
Wisdom Thou hast been pleased to take from us our highly
esteemed Brother ……. thus leaving a gap in our lodge as
well as in the family. We earnestly pray Thee to extend Thy
infinite mercy towards us and them. May the memory of his
good deeds be an inspiration to us and a comfort to those
who mourn his passing … SO MOTE IT BE.
D.C. We will sing the hymn “ABIDE WITH ME”.
(During the singing of this hymn the cushion and apron
are placed on the altar on top of the V.S.L. The deacons
and cushion bearer resume their places in the lodge.)
.ABIDE WITH ME
Abide with me; fast falls the eventide;
The darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide
When other helpers fail, and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, 0 abide with me.
Swift to its close, ebbs out life's little day:

*************************
W.M. Brethren, be seated.
I.G. Reads “CROSSING THE BAR” This ends the
ceremony.
LAST POST.
****************************************
CROSSING THE BAR.
Sunset and Evening Star,
And one clear call for me!
O and may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea,
*
But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.
*
50
Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be sadness of farewell,
When I embark
*
For tho’ from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When 1 have crost the bar.
The Apron stays on the alter until either the alter is required
for other ceremonial work (E.g. Degree work or Ballot) or just prior
to the first time of asking.
D.C. Bro Deacons. (The Deacons and Cushion Bearer rise and
salute. The JD leaves his place and perambulates around
the lodge collecting the Cushion Bearer and SD. They then
approach the alter from the West and collect the cushion
and apron. They then move to the North and take the
cushion and apron around and leave it on the E of M
cabinet, and then return to their respective places, salute
as a group and are seated.)
5.
MASONIC FUNERAL SERVICE
GENERAL
51
(The Lodge should select a Brother capable of carrying out this ceremony
before the public with dignity and decorum. Arrangements must be made
with the officiating Clergy so that the ceremony will finish with the
Benediction by the officiating Clergy.)
(It is recommended that the service be read as the decorum of the
presentation should not rely on a brother needing to be prompted.)
(This ceremony should not be used upon the internment of a Freemason
unless it be at the request of him or his family, and cannot unless he has
attained the rank of a M.M.)
(No dispensation is required for this Service.)
(No sign or honours are to be given and no regalia to be worn.)
INSTRUCTION
(After the usual religious service, the officiating Brother, standing at the
head of the grave [or lectern if a cremation], will proceed with the
following service.)
I invite all Freemasons to please stand.
As Freemasons, we are assembled this day to pay the last tribute of
Fraternal affection to our departed Brother, ----- ------- -------- ----- ----,
whom the Great Architect of the Universe has been pleased in his infinite
mercy to take unto himself.
For his attributes as a citizen of Queensland and a Freemason, and a
member of the United Grand Lodge of Queensland, we cherish his
memory.
(A very short eulogy on his Masonic contribution can be included here.)
It is on an occasion as this that we recall the words of the beautiful poem in
Ecclesiastes, known so well to all Master Masons.
Remember now thy Creator in the days of the youth,
While the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh,
When thou shall say, I have no pleasure in them.
52
While the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars be not darkened, nor
the clouds return after the rain.
In the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble,
And the strong men shall bow themselves,
And the grinders cease because they are few,
And those that look out of the windows be darkened.
And the doors shall be shut in the streets,
When the sound of the grinding is low,
And he shall rise up at the voice of the bird,
And all the daughters of the musick shall be bought low.
Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high,
And fear shall be in the way,
And the almond tree shall flourish,
And the grasshopper shall be a burden,
And desire shall fail.
Because man goeth to his long home,
And the mourners go about the streets.
Or ever the silver cord be loosed,
Or the golden bowl be broken,
Or the pitcher broken at the fountain,
Or the wheel broken at the cistern.
Then the dust return to the earth as it was,
And the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.
(Ecc. 12, Verses 1 to 7 inclusive.)
(Hold the sprig of acacia prominently in your hand.)
The sprig of acacia, which in past ages has marked the resting place of the
illustrious dead, like the weeping willow, is an emblem of tender sympathy
and never dying affection.
Being an evergreen, it is emblematic of Masonic faith in the immortality of
the soul.
(Move to the foot of the coffin and say)
I place on the coffin this sprig of acacia.
53
Our dear departed Brother has gone to his last resting place in peace.
(Do so and return to the lectern.)
Brethren, let us unite in a prayer with which we have parted so many,
many times before,
“So let us meet, act and part, and may the blessing of the Great Architect
of the Universe rest upon us and upon all true and faithful Brethren
throughout the world. May Brotherly love prevail and every moral and
social virtue cement us.”
So mote it be.

6.
LODGE SCOTIA
FRIENDSHIP NIGHT
Visitors are escorted into the Lodge Room and directed by the Deacons to
seats in the North. When they are seated the Master says:-
Gentlemen, my name is ------ ------. I am currently Master of this Lodge,
and on behalf of all the Brethren, I welcome you into our midst. Tonight
marks a special occasion for Lodge Scotia as the evening has been set aside
to enable members to invite friends who are not Freemasons to join us in
the Lodge. Only men of good repute have been invited and the fact that you
are included is an indication of the high regard in which you are held by
your host, and in turn accepted by the Lodge. I trust that your visit here
tonight will be both pleasurable and informative, and that you will enjoy
the brief program which has been prepared. I have asked W. Bro---- to give
you some background to our organization.
I will now introduce the various Officers of the Lodge, and explain to you
something about Freemasonry and Lodge Scotia. Gentlemen, as you will
agree, every organisation must have a head. In a Masonic Lodge he is the
Master, whom we address as “Worshipful Master”. Our master is ---- ----
and he has already identified himself to you. The Master must have
assistants to help him run the organisation, and in a Masonic Lodge these
are The Immediate Past Master --- ---, who was last year’s Master and is
seated on the Master’s left to offer him any assistance he may need while
the Lodge is open. The Senior Warden --- ---, the Junior Warden --- ---, the
Senior Deacon --- ---, the Junior Deacon --- ----. The Brother inside the
door is the Inner Guard and outside the door is the Tyler or Outer Guard.
The actions of all these people need to be co-ordinated, and this is the duty
of the Director of Ceremonies --- ---. As the Bible is an integral part of our
ceremony, we have a Chaplain who is --- ---. The administrative side of the
Lodge’s business is in the hands of the Secretary --- ---, and the Treasurer -
-- ---.
The next thing I would like to tell you is what Masonry is not. Although all
of our ceremonies are conducted in the presence of a Supreme Being -
known to most Australians as “God”, Masonry is not a religion. We do not
55
conduct a service of worship, but if a Brother lives by our teachings he
should stand a good chance when he eventually knocks at the Pearly Gates.
Each Degree is commenced with a prayer and a specific reading from the
Old Testament consistent with the teachings of that particular Degree.
During the Degree workings certain allegorical instructions consistent with
God’s wishes are given to the Candidate. We sing hymns and regular
reference is made to having a trust in God.
We are not, as has been suggested in the press and on television, a secret
society, We make no effort to hide who we are and our centres have the
square and compasses prominently displayed. We are, however, a society
which has certain words, phrases and signs, the uses of which are secret to
members in order that we might identify one another and to prevent
impostors from claiming to be Freemasons. We are also not a “benefit
society”. Having told you what we are not, I will now endeavour to explain
what we are.
Freemasonry is non-sectarian and non-political. It is open to just and free
men of mature age, sound judgment and strict morals. It embraces men of
every race, religion and shade of political thought. It requires a belief in a
Supreme Being and a future life. It inculcates the duty of prayer. It teaches
that God is the source from whence all good emanates; that he is just and
merciful, and that we can look to Him for comfort and support. This it will
be recognised is common ground with all the principal religions. Beyond
this Masonry does not dogmatise in particular theories or forms of belief,
or means of salvation. It does not purport to take the place of the religions
of mankind, but rather to encourage its members to be faithful and zealous
in the performance of the duties laid down by the particular religion to
which they belong.
Now let me deal with individual Lodges, such as this one. All Lodges are
democratic. Each year, at a specified time an election of Officers is held,
from the office of Worshipful Master to the office of Steward. Any Brother
may nominate somebody for a particular office and if two or more
nominations are received, a secret ballot is held. In addition, any Brother
may, with the permission of the Worshipful Master, speak on any relative
subject.
There are in excess of 300 Lodges meeting in Queensland, all of which are
under the umbrella of The United Grand Lodge of Queensland, but each
Lodge is, in itself, autonomous. We elect our own Worshipful Master and
56
Officers, set our own dues, and control our own finances. We make our
own by-laws, but everything we do must conform to the book of
Constitutions issued by The United Grand Lodge of Queensland.
I have no figures, but if there are over 300 Lodges in Queensland, surely
this would indicate around 2000 in Australia, and when you consider the
whole world, - the mind boggles. There are Masonic Lodges in almost
every country. Most would be held openly, but in some countries. I would
imagine, Lodges would need to meet covertly.
Freemasonry is an ancient system of morality, which promotes goodwill
and Brotherhood amongst men. It requires that every man wishing to join
must believe in the existence of a Supreme Being, therefore an Atheist
could not become a Freemason. It is based on the principles of truth, piety,
virtue, brotherly love and benevolence. The last of these principles,
benevolence or charity is well known in the community through the
existence of the Masonic Homes for elderly Brethren and their wives or
widows at Sandgate. Support for this complex is regarded as the main
Masonic charity in South East Queensland. Similar, but smaller complexes
exist at Rockhampton, Townsville, the Gold Coast, Kingaroy and in other
States. Less well known, but very important, is the fact that Freemasonry in
Queensland supports a “Chair of Geriatric medicine” at the University of
Queensland, which was established with the sum of $1,000,000 years ago.
While the improvement in recent years of Government social security has
reduced the need for Lodges to support near destitute members, as has
happened in the past, Charity in its widest meaning remains a cornerstone
of Freemasonry. In more recent times the United Grand Lodge of
Queensland has embarked on fundraising for the Leukemia Foundation
with over $1.5 million raised and the purchase of an expensive (over
$1,000,000) microscope for medical research.
Our ceremonies revolve around historical events which occurred during the
building of King Solomon’s Temple and we use the tools (the square, the
level, the plumb-rule, compasses, etc.) used by stone masons in the
construction of the building to illustrate some particular aspect of morality;
the idea being that the handling of a particular tool at any time to remind
us of its moral significance.
The whole thrust of our ceremonies involves Candidates and the Brethren
of the Lodge, in a highly moral learning progression which over time
encourages Masons to continue expanding their Masonic knowledge. For
example, as you look around you in this Lodge Room, you will see that an
57
overriding colour scheme of blue is evident. The blue of the Masonic
aprons, gauntlets and collars worn by the Lodge Officers, even the
upholstery of the chairs and seats, is blue. Some other Masonic Orders
have aprons, collars and general decorations in red, thus giving the terms
you may have already heard - “BLUE LODGES” and “RED LODGES”.
After a man has been a Mason for a reasonable time and has gained a good
grounding in basic Freemasonry in a Blue Lodge he can, if he seeks to
widen his Masonic knowledge, and further develop Masonic skills, seek
membership of a Red Lodge. There is virtually no end to the gaining of
Masonic knowledge; a lifelong search for truth about Freemasonry and
how the individual can grow in personal stature and understanding of
himself and his fellow men, is his, through Masonic learning.
Nor are ladies and children overlooked. The order of The Eastern Star
exists for ladies with a Masonic connection. This is an Order in which a
Mason and his wife can belong. The DeMolays is an Order for young men
from 12 to 21 years, and the girls also have Orders such as Job’s Daughters
and The Order of the Rainbow.
The Masonic fraternity is comprised of Brethren from all walks of life -
from Kings to labourers, but in a Freemasons Lodge rank and fortune stay
outside and we meet inside on the level. A case in point is that when King
George VI, then the Prince of Wales, was made a Freemason, he was
initiated into Freemasonry by the local Postmaster.
Years ago, Most Worshipful Brother Norm Bauer, who was then our Grand
Master said he had never seen Freemasonry better described than in the
words of Winwood Reed who wrote: -
“The doctrines of Freemasonry are the most beautiful that is possible to
imagine. They breathe the simplicity of the earliest ages, animated by the
love of a martyred God. That word which puritans translated “CHARITY”,
but which is really “LOVE”, is the keystone which supports the entire
edifice of this mystic science. Love one another; teach one another; help
one another. That is our doctrine - all our science - all our law. We have no
narrow-minded prejudices; we do not debar from our Society this sect or
that sect. It is sufficient for us that a man worships God, no matter under
what name or in what manner”.
6.1 HISTORY
Finally I would like to give you a brief history of this Lodge.
58
The formation of Lodge Scotia arose after a February 1918 meeting of
Ionic Lodge (902 SC) in the Alice Street Temple, as local brethren walked
to their homes from the tram terminus at Kedron Bridge. Soon after they
were joined by other Scottish brethren and planning meetings were held in
Bro Alex Dewar’s workshop behind the Edinburgh Castle Hotel. At the
second unofficial meeting, 29 brethren were present and they were clearly
seeking potential initiates. The name “Scotia” was chosen: the Roman
name for Scotland; the name of a prominent Glasgow temple; and the
name of the Stafford tannery operated by the Gibson family, prominent
members of the new-forming lodge.
Sponsoring lodges were Lodge Hope (1134 SC, now Kaye Lodge 234
UGLQ) and Aberleigh (1133 SC, now disbanded), and the petition was
dispatched to Edinburgh after approval by District Grand Master Thomas
Burstow on 13th May 1918. The suffrages of the brethren had fallen on
Bro. David Christie Samuel to be the expert brother to preside over them as
Right Worshipful Master. The brass-bound VSL, now reserved for use at
Installations, was presented by Wor. Bro. Samuel, and chairs for the
RWM, WSW and WJW, now in the Eustace Jones Hall at Sandgate
Homes, were provided by Ionic Lodge.
On Saturday 20th July 1918, to the skirl of bagpipes, with Scottish Lodges
ranging under their banners, the District Grand Lodge assembled to
consecrate Lodge Scotia numbered 1176 on the Roll of the Grand Lodge of
Scotland. The time-honoured spectacular ceremony of consecration was
confirmed by Rt. Hon. Burstow, the elements of salt, corn, oil and wine
being applied to the service of the Most High and Mankind, and the DGM
declared Lodge Scotia duly constituted, dedicated and proclaimed.
During the dinner (alas, according to custom, the ladies were not present),
chairs in the lodge room were filled by brethren from Aberleigh, Hope and
Ionic Lodges and the DGM and his officers, preceded by Piper Bro. A.
McLennan, entered to install the Foundation Master and invest his officers.
Before the meeting closed, propositions from Victor Gordon Gibson,
William George Early, David Barker and John Anderson were read in open
lodge.
The festive board which followed included toasts to the King and the MW
Grand Master Mason of Scotland, MW Bro. Brig-Gen. Robert Gordon
Gilmore of Craigmillar, and concluded, after a Visitor’s toast proposed by
59
the Deputy Master, and the Tyler’s toast proposed by the WJW, with the
singing of Auld Lang Syne.
Within the first year, nine brethren were initiated and three brethren
affiliated from other lodges.

6.3 CLOSING FRIENDSHIP NIGHT
61
(By the Worshipful Master)
Gentlemen, earlier tonight, before you entered the Lodge Room, The Lodge
had been opened, business attended to and the main part of our closing
ceremony dealt with. Tonight I invite you to join with us in the final part of
our closing ceremony.
(Knocks and says) All please rise.
Brother Senior Warden, how should etc.?
Brother Junior Warden, how should etc.?
And part on the Square. (Deacons usher visitors to the floor of the Lodge.)
And Brethren, so let us meet, act and part, and may etc. - Brother Junior
Warden, you have an announcement.
Junior Warden - Gentlemen, a festive board has been prepared in the room
below and it is the Worshipful Master’s wish that you stay and partake of
same. This invitation is especially directed to our visitors. Gentlemen, the
supper is usually fairly basic and so as not to create false impressions, this
is how it will be tonight.
Worshipful Master - Brethren, the Lodge stands closed, unclothed and
untyled.
7
Fraternal Visits
A minimum of 7brethren should be present for a fraternal visit. The Master
(or IPM) should be in attendance. Prior to the opening the Master or DC
(acting DC) should liaise with the DC and Master of the Lodge being
visited so as to ensure they are happy for Scotia to enter as a “Fraternal
Visit” Lodge. Some explanation of our method of entry may also be
required.
Appropriate collars, gauntlets, and DC’s baton are worn. Non officers may
wear the collars of absent Officers. EAs and FCs should not wear lodge
collars.
62
The brethren form up outside the door and are announced by the Tyler to
the Inner Guard as “The Wor Master and Brethren of Scotia Lodge on a
Fraternal Visit”.
The order of entry is:
^^
DC (or Acting DC)
JD SD
Member/Officer Member/Officer
WJW WSW
Wor Master
^^
On entry the team perambulates to the NE corner leaving adequate space
once stopped for 2 members to pass between the rows. The 2 rows once
stopped, pause and then turn to face each other, at the same time the DC
turns right, takes 2 paces and then turns to face the East. The Wor Master
passes through the members to a point level with the DC and stops. The
members all turn to face the East. The DC says “Brethren, you will take
the step and salute the Wor Master taking your time from Wor Bro ---”
(Scotia Wor Master). After that is done the DC says, “Wor Master, I
present to you Wor Bro ---, Wor Master of Scotia Lodge.”
The Wor Master of Scotia ascends the pedestal and exchanges greetings
with the Lodge Wor Master and may elect to accept an invitation (if
extended) to remain in the East. If not he joins the DC and the 2 rows
again turn to face each other and starting with the W Wardens pass
between the rows and they all perambulate (lead by the Master and DC) to
their seats on the floor of the lodge and are seated. Lodge seating may
determine if the members are able to sit together. In some cases PMs may
sit in the East. A quick check before the lodge is opened may assist in
planning where to sit especially if EAs or FCs are in the team.
