The future of Wind Farms
As offshore wind farms move towards deploying higher capacity turbines of 5MW and above, energy losses during energy transfer will escalate unless higher voltages are used for power evacuation.
In comparison with onshore installations, offshore wind farms have more predictable wind flows and avoid conflicts with other types of land use; however higher costs imply the necessity to pursue economies generated by increasing the power of the turbines and the dimensions of the farms on the one side and decreasing the power absorbed by the collection grid on the other.
The increases of the produced power, of the distance from shore, of the distance between wind turbines and of their number in a single wind farm have amplified the importance of reducing the power losses that may be obtained using HV connection.
EWEA forecasts predict that in the next two decades the traditional 2 MW and 3 MW turbines will nearly completely give way to turbines of 5 MW and above, operating in farms producing hundreds of MW each.

The PASS modular design allows a wide range of configurations fully comprehensive of:
− Circuit breaker; − Disconnecting switches; − Earthing switches; − Current transformers; − Voltage transformers; − Surge arresters; − Protection and control systems.
PASS M00 is a suitable solution for HV Wind Farm collection grids due to its main advantages:
− Compactness due to full gas insulation; − Short installation time (no HV test is required on site); − High reliability obtained through lean design; − Fast repair in case of faults due to modular assembly; − Remote control permitted by motor operability; − Easy combination with oil insulated, gas insulated and dry
power transformers; − Easy cable connection by means of plug-in components; − Long life time due to proven design for harsh environmental
conditions.
PASS M00
PASS M00 is the ABB line of multifunctional modules that cover voltages between 72.5 kV and 100 kV and breaking currents up to 40 kA.

− Reduce the number of array necessary to evacuate the energy arising from Wind Turbine generators;
− Reduce the numbers of cables in parallel for each feeder due to lower currents;
− Enhancing the power capacity of each feeder, the number of wind turbines for each feeder can increase;
− Reduce the losses in subsea AC internal grid array cables;
− Decrease the voltage drop in feeders/string;
− Decrease the short circuit value on internal grid apparatus;
− Avoid the construction of off-shore HV/MV platform substation when off-shore wind farms are close to the coast;
− Make possible having flexible internal configuration and reaching higher reliability.
The advantages of high voltage modules
A case study of new generation offshore Wind Farms equipped with 5 MW turbines revealed that the use of PASS M00 modules in 72 kV collection grids allowed to fit a complete HV substation within a tower.

Example of configuration with TIPThe Inductive power transformer (TIP) combines the capabilities of a voltage transformer for voltages up to 420 kV with the characteristics of a power transformer with ratings up to 200 kVA; therefore it is a perfectly suitable solution for supplying the PASS M00 switchgear and other auxiliary services, with these advantages:
− Reduced dimensions; − Maintenance free; − Fast connection; − High reliability; − Wide range of available power; − Possibility to include a disconnector; − Resistance to stressful environmental conditions.
