What is Coal Tar?

Coal Tar is a brown black liquid of extremely high viscosity.

How Coal Tar Derived

It is a by-product obtained during the carbonization of coal to make coke.

It is also derived from the gasification of coal to make coal gas.

Carbonization of Coal

The coke production involves the process of coal carbonization at high temperature (1100 ˚C) under the oxygen deficient environment to concentrate the carbon.

The commercial carbonization process is categorized into two processes: By-product Coke production Non-Recovery/ Heat Recovery Coke production

In By-product coke production process Coal tar is obtained as a by-product.

While in Non-Recovery Coke making process no by-products are recovered.

By-Product Coke Production

‘Coke side’ of a By-Product Coke Oven Battery

The process of By-Product Coke production comprises of different steps which are as follows: Step-1: Before carbonization, the selected coals from

specific mines are blended, pulverized, and oiled for proper bulk density control.

Step-2: The blended coal is charged into a number of slot type ovens wherein each oven shares a common heating flue with the adjacent oven.

Step-3: Coal is carbonized in a reducing atmosphere and the off-gas is collected and sent to the by-product plant where various by-products like coal tar, light oil, etc. are recovered.
