We build your company’s brand and reputation from the Inside Out. MediaMosaics developed
various business and communication models on which we base the development of our strategies and
have applied these with great success in the past.
We strongly believe that a company’s external brand, or reputation, is influenced by factors such as:
• Culture of the company, its people and their behaviour
• Products and services
• The environment
• Communication and marketing; and
• Unplanned messages
Media Mosaics
Building your Brand from the Inside Out 3
Our strength lies in the harnessing of internal communication to realign and focus people, culture and
behaviour to ultimately contribute positively to the company’s business objectives, but more
importantly – to contribute to the company’s reputation.

EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT MODEL
“These people that work for you are creative, loyal, energetic and innovative…except during the
eight hours each day that they work for you.”
Tom Peters, Tom Peters Co.
Employee engagement can be defined in a variety of ways: “Hearts and minds orientated to the
business”, “employees who think and act as business people”, “employees who say, stay and
strive”… Whichever way you want to say it, the two key ingredients of employee engagement are
intellectual connection and emotional commitment.
More important than the definition is what engagement actually looks like and the difference it
can make to any organisation. We believe that engagement should be described in terms of
behaviour. An engaged employee’s attention is focused, he participates, is productive,
committed, creative and most importantly - his behaviour is channelled.
In the employee egagement model, employees’ needs are based on four questions:
• ME What’s in it for me?
• US Am I part of a family?
• GROWTH Can I grow here?
• PURPOSE Why am I doing this?
Media Mosaics
Building your Brand from the Inside Out 4
Classified under each of these questions are specific elements that people value.

total communication service.

We believe in building strong and trusting relationships with our clients.
Whatever needs to be done – we will deliver.
OUR TRACK RECORD
The Media Mosaics team has worked with an extensive and diverse range of clients. Herewith a short
synopsis of some of our projects:
South African Post Office
250% improvement in employees reporting crime…
Awarded Best Campaign at the international “World Mail Awards”. Category: Security
The client wanted to internalise their Code of Ethical Conduct with employees through a Crime
Awareness Campaign. This huge and exciting venture involved the development of a communications
plan and the implementation of a vast array of communication media. The core was the development
of an industrial theatre road show that visited the major mail centres around the country. Supporting
the communication theatre production, a variety of creative print and digital media, promotional
items and videos were developed. Products were distributed to more than two thousand outlets (24
000 employees) around South Africa.
Media provided:
 Communication strategy and plan
 Campaign brand and identity
A 45-minute Industrial Theatre Road Show was performed for audiences up to 1500 people. It
was complimented by exhibition stands and caricature cut outs, presentations, local choirs and
catering to all attendees. Videos were produced for training and presentations to employees who
couldn’t attend.
Media Mosaics
Building your Brand from the Inside Out 8
Campaign introductory live broadcast to branches all over the country
A Cartoon character symbolising the company’s role within the campaign, applied to all campaign
related media.
Introductory brochure in the form of a megaphone
Customised notice boards that were utilised in more than 2000 outlets. The boards were
maintained by distributing monthly information packs providing the material to be displayed to
specified managers. Elements included a theme of the week, motivational slogans, feedback on
questions from employees, a letter from the CEO, progress on “The Letter” campaign.
“The Letter”: An informal survey to test the effectiveness of the postal service in terms of time
and reliability. The letter had to reach X amount of destinations within a record time without
getting lost, stolen or damaged. After successful completion of the project it was framed and
handed over to the CEO at the last road show.
To aid awareness amongst employees, customised campaign tea bags were produced conveying
messages relating to the Code of Conduct. These were distributed to the tearooms at all outlets
to make the most of the culture of 11 o’clock tea.
A Photo Comic Book of the industrial theatre was
produced in English and Zulu to enforce the
message of the theatre.
24 000 material Shopping Bags were
manufactured as end year gifts to all employees.
These were specially packaged with a 2004
calendar and Christmas card and distributed to all
outlets.
Campaign T-shirts were produced for campaign
team members
Campaign key rings promoted the toll-free
number to report crime. A call centre was set up
to deal with any questions, queries, crime issues
etc.
 Training videos
Although this campaign addressed very serious issues such as negative behaviour, fraud, corruption,
theft and mal-administration, our aim was to reach the campaign objectives in a light, fun and
humoristic manner. Employees were given something that they could relate to and understand and
the human element featured strongly.
The focus was on the individual having to make the change within himself before there could be a
change in organisational culture. People were motivated to do self-exploration and question their
behaviour and its impact on colleagues and their work environment. Employees were also shown how
important their contributions were for the success of the organisation, however small it might be.

Sasol Polymers
Project: Values@Work
Media Mosaics facilitated the development and implementation of a change communications
strategy and plan for the Values@work campaign at Sasol Polymers. This campaign had to create
awareness, understanding and buy-in amongst all employees into the Sasol values. Specific
behaviours were identified for each value which had to be entrenched in the every day life of the
employees. The approach was to get people involved and excited about the project. Media Mosaics
facilitated the process from planning to implementation, guiding the project team for a period of
three years.

The Values@Heart project partners with other initiatives within the Sasol Polymers PP to ensure

with the aim to create awareness amongst a wide variety of employees of the Values and Syngergy
projects.

their role as Values champions. One of the focus areas was identified as communication. We are
currently developing aids to help management enhance their communication effectiveness.
Project: Fit for Change
To show Management’s support of a new HR initiative, a motivational video was produced, targeting
employees. Management was conveyed as being fit and ready for change with vivid images and
powerful music to create a dynamic effect.
Sasol Technology
Media Mosaics has played an active part in the development and support of communication for
various projects within different divisions of this company. These include:
Media Mosaics
Building your Brand from the Inside Out 10
Project Traction
Media Mosaics developed and implemented a communication and marketing campaign for a Project
Management training programme for all engineers. Working closely with the project team, Media
Mosaics had to ensure acceptance and support for the project. Media produced included training
videos, marketing and course material, multimedia presentations, events and a customised training
board game.
Communication in Action (CIA)
A project aimed at developing and empowering secretaries to play an active role in the improvement
of communication within the company. The secretaries received training in Basic Corporate
Communication and Communication Project Management, Creativity and Positive Power and
Influence. The project started with a Situational Analysis of
communication within the company, after which key focus areas were
identified and specific objectives defined. This lead to the
development of customised training to address the most burning
needs, ensuring skills development that would be the most beneficial
for the company. The CIA is today an independent group of
individuals making a difference in communication at all levels within
the company.
Information Management (IM) new business strategy
After a restructuring exercise, Media Mosaics assisted a newly formed
communication team (made up of people out of a variety of
functions) with the development and implementation of a
communications plan to manage the change within the division. This
was combined with practical training to empower the group to be
independent in the creation of communication initiatives in the
future.
The group received training in Communication Research,
Communication Project Management and Best Practices in
Communication. Media Mosaics also produced various media for this
group.
Work, Life & Beyond
This campaign was developed in support of an HR Wellness initiative.
A comprehensive campaign was developed to launch the project,
create awareness and encourage attendance of the training
programmes. Media included training material, a Multimedia DVD,
video, PowerPoint presentations, brochures, promotional posters,
teasers etc.
The programme was very well received and additional launch events
had to be scheduled to accommodate a greater number of
interested employees than originally anticipated. The programmes
are currently being implemented in the company and courses are
fully booked four months in advance.
Balanced Scorecard
Media Mosaics developed the concept, communications plan and
media for this project which is currently running within the Sasol
Technology environment. The overall aim of the project is to inform
and motivate employees to actively work towards reaching company objectives.

Corporate Governance
An awareness campaign was launched recently to communicate the essence of Corporate
Governance in a simple manner, providing the bigger picture of what this management tool means to
the company. The aim is to minimise resistance and gain support from all employees.
Best in Class campaign - Cost Engineering
Currently underway, this campaign aims to motivate employees of the Cost Engineering division to
reach a divisional goal by the end of the year. Media Mosaics conceptualised and produced the media
for the campaign which included team-building games, posters, desk calendars, PowerPoint
presentations and promotional items.

MultiChoice Africa
Media Mosaics began working with MultiChoice in 2004 and developed and implemented a number
of their exciting internal communication campaigns. The most interesting projects were:
Corporate Governance Awareness Campaign (Maximise Performance - Minimise risk)
MultiChoice Africa is committed to adhering to the King II and Sarbanes Oxley reports. They expressed
the desire to be the forerunners in the implementation of Corporate Governance policies within the
Naspers Group under which they operate. In order to ensure that the message of Corporate
Governance was made available to all the employees, an extensive campaign was launched
throughout the entire organization. The aim of the campaign was to create awareness of Corporate
Governance in general and buy-in to the 8 important elements of effective Corporate Governance.
Media Mosaics developed a campaign around a fictional character, an adventurer called “Max” who
was employed by MultiChoice to discover the meaning of Corporate Governance. Through Max and
his quest, employees were encouraged to embark on their own personal journey to discover the
meaning of Corporate Governance.
Media used:
• Industrial Theatre was used to launch the campaign and to introduce employees to Max and the
8 core messages around Corporate Governance.
• Diary - Employees were given their own Corporate Governance diary for 2005 which contained
Max’s diary entries as he progressed on his journey to discover Corporate Governance. Reference
material on the King II report was included in the back of the diary.
• Competitions - A risk competition invited employees to identify risks within their department and
submit them together with a solution to management.
Media Mosaics
Building your Brand from the Inside Out 12
• The second competition, the lucky draw, invited employees to collect 8 tokens that represented
the 8 core corporate governance messages. These tokens needed to be stuck on a postcard in
their diaries and handed in. A prize was handed out to the first employee whose name was drawn
with all 8 tokens.
• Gifts - Together with their tokens, each employee received a small gift reinforcing the core
message of the week. For example, for the message of Social responsibility, each employee
received their Social responsibility token together with an aids “love letter”.
• Website and banner ads - A Corporate Governance website was developed and posted on
Multichoice’s intranet. The website contained the 8 core messages which were updated weekly,
general information about the campaign, Max’s story as well as the King II reference material.
• Poster campaign and foyer display - A huge poster was displayed within MultiChoice’s foyer for
the duration of the campaign. Max’s treasure chest was placed underneath the foyer poster. This
chest was used to collect feedback about the campaign as well as collect employees’ entries for
the risk and lucky draw competitions. Posters were also distributed throughout the building.
These posters changed weekly to communicate the relevant core message.
• Media Mosaics was also responsible for the concept development, design and printing of
Corporate Governance files for middle management and a glossary file explaining MultiChoice
terminology.
Employee Report 2004
Media Mosaics developed the concept, design and printing of MultiChoice’s annual employee report.
The idea of the report was based on the “Hello”, a glossy tabloid magazine. The aim was to showcase
employees as the true celebrities and stars of MultiChoice. The report was a huge success and
exceptionally well received by all the employees. The report was also entered into the 2005 Gold Quill
Awards for creative communication.
Vision and Mission: You’re part of the Picture campaign
When MultiChoice launched a new Vision and Mission, Media Mosaics was
appointed to develop a campaign to help employees internalise and buy-in
to these strategic guidelines.
The concept of the campaign was based on the idea that each employee is
important, has a definite role to play and a very specific fit into the total
plan of the company. The campaign was built around a “Picture Book” that
would be populated over a few months through information sessions lead
by management. The Picture book was developed as a workbook conveying
the total picture of MultiChoice, including the vision, mission, strategy,
values, divisional objectives and even personal visions of employees for the
company. Each manager would have discussion sessions with their team to
encourage participation and understanding. Managers would receive
communication toolkits containing briefing sheets as well as the tools and handouts that they would
require.
