Goal

To implement energy and cost cutting initiatives that also make the school a more environmentally friendly member of the community

Topics

• Four-Day School Week

• Busing System

• The Cree Lighting System

• Revamp Cafeteria Utensils and Recycling

Four-Day School Week

• Have Monday thru Thursday extended by half an hour to an hour.

• Shorten lunch and flex periods

• This will still meet the state law of “180 days”

Savings

• By eliminating a Friday from our week we can save money in many ways

• For Example: Heating/Air Conditioning, Electric/Utilities, Staff Costs, Bus Transportation, etc.

Savings

• Weisenberg: $303.77 a day

• Northwestern Elementary: $176.07

• Middle School: $268.42

• High School: $628.24

Savings

• District Wide Savings is $1,376.50 per Friday off

• Multiplied by 36 Fridays not in school• This equal $49,554 a year in savings

from electric and utilities.

Transportation Savings

• With the bus fleet traveling 731,422 miles in a year cutting a Friday saves a lot

• 4,063.46 miles per day• $2.69 per gallon of gas• Buses get 8.6mpg• Miles per day times 36 days divided by mpg

times cost of fuel =

Savings

• $45,756.45 in diesel fuel savings a year

• Miles saved for a whole year is 146,284.56

• Saving miles can increase bus lifetime and lower maintenance costs.

Savings

• Heating and utilities will increase due to extension of school days.

• This does not effect the money saved by busing.

• Busing will be the same Monday through Thursday and not increase cost.

Four-Day Week Conclusion

• Total Savings from four-day school week is $95,310.27 a year

• It will also will help make the school more environmentally conscious

Tray-less Tuesday

• Every Tuesday• Cold Lunches• Served in Brown

Bags

Recycling

• We receive money• No cost, just profit• They pick it up

Styrofoam Free

• Styrofoam takes 1+ million years to decompose

• Paper bags take 1 month to decompose

Eliminating Styrofoam Cups

• District wide creates 500gallon of waste a week

• We use 200 containers a day

• 50gallons = 1toter

Cree Lighting System

• The Cree Lighting is a system of LED lights

• These lights last longer and are more efficient

• They also save more money in electric

Cree Lighting System

• These use 60% less energy than the schools current light fixtures. And pay back in 6 months.

• Are current light fixtures use up 32 watts. With the Cree lighting we can use less lighting fixtures per classroom.

Cree Lighting System

• Our Cafeteria has over 172 lights are on all day, even though we have lunch from 10:34 to 11:53.

• With Cree we would use less energy and by turning off the light before and after the lunch times.

Marquee

• Putting Ads on the marquee.

• Charging $200 a month for one ad.

• With 5 ads a month Northwestern can earn annually $12,000.

Busing System

• Goal- to make the busing system more efficient and eco-friendly

• With the price of gas, the buses were an obvious aspect of the school to focus on

Busing System

• Make fewer bus stops

• Fill buses to maximum capacity

• Have a full day of kindergarten

• Half days only can occur for whole district

Less Bus Stops

• Have kids walk or driven to stops• Kids can only walk up to 1.5 miles• Since the school district is

approximately 110 square miles have a total of 37 stops for the whole district

• Each bus have about three stops

Less Bus Stops

• By having the buses filled, we can save eight buses

• Each bus averages 22,500 miles a year

• This equals over 7,000 dollars in savings per bus a year

Less Bus Stops

• Since kids are going farther, filling the buses will be easier and faster

• It also means less miles traveled and more fuel costs saved

• It can also save the cost of the eight drivers we won’t need anymore

• This saves approximately $50,000-$60,000

Full Day of Kindergarten

• Change kindergarten to a full day, instead of a half day

• This will save the amount of trips our buses need to make in a day

• To compensate for the extra students, they won’t go everyday of the week

• This change has the potential to save $20,000 a year

Conclusion

These are are a few initiatives our school could take to become a more environmentally conscious member of the community, while still saving money
