Project  Title:

NSF  DMREF:  Multi-‐Scale  Modeling  and  Characterization  of  Plasticity  and  Fracture  in  Magnesium  Alloys.

Faculty  Name  /  Department  /  Office  #  /  Email  /  Phone  #:

Haitham  El  Kadiri  Assistant  Professor,  Mechanical  Engineering  Department  215  Carpenter  building  Phone:  (662)  325  4777

Brief  Project  Description  [3-‐5  sentences]:

Work  requires  performing  in  situ  EBSD  analyses  on  bending  and  post  mortem  texture  analyses  to  identify  the   role  of   {1012}   and   {1011}   twinning   in  damage  progression   in  Mg.  The  overarching  goal   of   this  Obama  Material  Genome  Initiative  project  is  to  relieve  current  industrial  frustrations  with  wrought  Mg  alloys,  which  could  lead  to  a  rapid  end  to  the  current  renaissance  in  Mg-‐based  material  research  and  development.

Required  Qualif ications  (optional):  Mechanical  Engineering,  and  GPA    ≥  3.5

Preferred  Qualif ications  (optional):   GPA  =  4.0

Expected  Number  of  UG  Researcher  Positions:  Two

Expected  Number  of  Hours  per  Week:  For  each  student,  12  hours  in  Fall/Spring,  30  hours  in  Summer.

Figure/Graphic  (optional):

Figure  1.   Inverse   pole   figure  maps   obtained   by   in   situ   EBSD   on   a   same   grain   at   three   compressive  plastic   strain   levels.  This  grain  experiences  a  double-‐variant  of   {1012}   twinning.  Both  variants  grew  under  Schmid’s  factor  values  of  0.49.  The  twins  (in  red)  grew  in  a  parent  matrix  (in  blue).
