Where Graffiti Came from?• Graffiti started in the
late 1960s in Philadelphia.
• The movement started by two artists name Cornbread and Cool Earl
• Street Art branched off from Graffiti.
Graffiti - Pros
• People pay for their wall to be decorated, this creates jobs for people.
• Graffiti and political issues.• It is a way for people to express themselves.• It can be used to raise money for charity.• Graffiti can be inspirational, Emotional and
cultural.• It can be decorative and make an empty space
look good.
Graffiti - Cons
• Its costs the government a large amount of money for Graffiti Removal.
• Some people see graffiti as being Vulgar.• Graffiti can be used for gangs to mark their
territory, this can be viewed in a negative point of view.
• Bad influence on children
Street Art - Pros
• It’s a way for artists to express themselves. • Street Art is a transition between vandalism and
Art.• It expresses political and personal issues.• It gives life to a blank wall.• Freedom of Expression• Street Art artists get paid for their work to be
displayed in a gallery.• Street art is cheaper and more accessible
Street Art - Cons
• Can be viewed as vandalism.• It is illegal unless they get
permission.• Vapors from the spray paints
are released into the atmosphere.
• Money for removal comes out of our pockets not the Governments.
Bomb it
• Its an international graffiti and street art documentary directed by Jon Reiss.
• It explores the interplay between worldwide graffiti movements.
• It was filmed on five continents featuring cities such as New York, Cape Town, London, Paris, Amsterdam, Tokyo, Berlin and Sao Paulo.
Corn Bread
• Darryl McCray known by his name “Cornbread” is a graffiti artist from Philadelphia, credited with being the first modern graffiti artist.
Taki 183He was one of the most influential graffiti writers in its history. His “tag” was short for Dimitraki, and the number 183 came from his address on 183rd Street in Washington Heights. The graffiti tag in the 1985 film Turk 182 was inspired by Taki 183.
Shepard Fairey
• Frank Shepard Fairey is an America street artist, Graphic designer and illustrator who emerged for the skateboarding scene.
• He is well known for his ‘Andre the giant has a posse’ (OBEY) campaign.
• He is also widely known during the 2008 presidential election for his Barack Obama “Hope’ poster.
