Why in english?

• Because it will serve you to practice your English

• Because one day you will go to another country to study

• Because we want more foreign students to study here

• Because my boss forces me to do it

Objetives

• Students will learn to build appearance models using different materials: foam, plastic filler, plaster, resin, silicone, and so on.

• Students will learn the function of ergonomic, appearance and functional models, and the difference between them and their importance in the design process.

• Students will learn to use machines to build prototypes in wood.

What is an appearancemodel?• An appearance model is the one that shows the

physical, volumetric and ergonomic characteristics of a product.

• It is as similar as possible to the design proposal.• It can show some function.• It is used to evaluate characteristics of

ergonomics, customer perception and appreciation, study of color and form, conceptualization (focus group).

3D Sketching and conceptual model3D Sketching: Materialization of ideas through the quick manipulation of materials such as plasticine and cardboard.

Conceptual model: They represent the first design proposals

Ergonomic models

Models made with rigid materialsto assess ergonomic aspects: handgrip, visual weight, locations, textures, etc.

Ergonomic model evaluation

Handgrip, shape, inclinations, weight, balance, positions, reach, textures, etc..

Focus group

Conceptual model Ergonomic model Appearance model

Appearance model processes

Molds and casting

Sanding and polishing resin

Cutting and grindinghigh density foam

Assembly and adjust resin in foam

Appareance models

Appareance models

Thermoforming

• Thermoforming plastic is used to generate covers commonly used in packaging (blisters).

• Plastic take the form of an external volume and gives value to generate models of products and parts for models.

Thermoforming examples

Thermoforming process in PETG: cutting, taping and painting.

Prototypes

A prototype is:

- Functional.- Use equal materials of original proposal.- It looks like the original product.

- Allows us to check performance, aesthetics, dimensions, ergonomics, production feasibility, market acceptance (focus group).

- You can work on it to generate modifications.

Picture frames

of wood

Prototype built in wood project, where you learn to use basic cutting machines to produce more complex prototypes.

Course:

• Part 1: – 3D Sketching, concept model, ergonomic

model.• Part 2:

– Thermoforming, appearance model and picture frame.

• Part 3:

Course:

• Part 1: – 3D Sketching, concept model, ergonomic

model.• Part 2:

– Thermoforming, appearance model and picture frame.
