Dear Parents and Carers,
The Government have now released the guidance for how schools are to operate in September. The
senior leadership team and Multi academy trust are now working through the guidance and looking
at ways we can make it work here at Winchcombe Abbey. I will write to you again next week with an update.
I can say that we will be expecting children to be in school uniform when school resumes in September.
Reports will be sent home w/c13th July along with class organisation for September. They will either come home by hand, if children are in school, or will arrive in the post.
Please keep safe and well.
With my very best wishes
Mrs Sally Johnson
E Safety update
Focus on: Safer Surfing
The Internet has given us access to information on pretty much any topic 24 hours a day, seven days
a week, but understanding how to find information that is suitable and relevant is a skill that
children have to be taught. Allowing children to carry out searches independently can cause
problems, the most worrying being access to content that is inappropriate. This is why SWGfL (South
West Grid for Learning) have developed a search engine, designed from the ground up, specifically
for children. The search engine is called Swiggle and provides children with a safer environment
when they are taking their first steps on the road to safe online searching. Swiggle is powered by Google Custom Search and feeds back results that have been filtered by Google SafeSearch. Not only
is it filtered, but it also prioritises educational resources so will tend to give results that are more
suitable for a younger audience.
In a nutshell, Swiggle:
Provides education-focused results.
Is Ad-free. Uses Google Safe search technology.
Blocks inappropriate searches (as well as results). Includes reporting tools. Works on a range of different devices including tablets and phones.
Is free. Has a widget that enables a child to cover the screen should they access something
they feel uncomfortable with (this is something we teach them to do at school as they can then allow an adult to view the content and make a decision as to how to proceed).
No safe search engine is 100% foolproof but this certainly goes a long way towards making your
child’s online experience a positive one.

Home Learning
The children in school have really got into the theme this week of ‘Athlete’s Assemble’. Here’s what
some of the bubbles have been up to:
The children in the Flamingo bubble have been getting arty and have created a beautiful collage to
represent their team, as well as designing and
making these Olympic medals made using clay.
After exploring flags linked to the Olympics, the children in Dolphins had a go at designing flags for their bubble.
Alongside lots of exciting things, the children in
Turtles have been getting busy with Maths – including making numbers using their bodies!
The Tigers have been busy using their
research and design skills to create
PowerPoint presentations about different Olympic sports.
