    Volvo V40

    Swe deSeduct ion

    By James Siddall

It looks like an estate a very slinky, svelteone at that. And it takes over not only from the outgoing

V40 estate, but the S40 sedan too. Volvo says thatif anyone is looking for a medium-sized Volvosedan, they can and will look to their S60, a carthat Im fond of indeed.

But for all that, the Swedish company says thatthe new V40 competes in the Premium Hatchbackclass, and like most Volvo products its supreme-ly understated, bereft of the arrogance and hubristhat sometimes characterises other marques.

I drove two variants on the launch in Knysna a picture postcard town that always makes mesuspect that it has some dark secrets ripplingbeneath its manicured exterior. Rather like aStephen King town. Its also worryingly sani-

tised. No matter. The launch was easily the best

structured affair Ive been on all year. When I landed at the airport in nearby George,

there was a V40 D3 waiting for me none of thisbusiness of being shuttled in a bus to the hotel.

I slotted the Swede into gear and drove insplendid solitude to the Turbine Boutique Hoteland Spa in Knysna, drinking in the V40s un-derstated interior and beautiful build quality, theD3s five-cylinder, in-line turbodiesel motorpouring on 110kW and 350Nm of torque with allthe smoothness of whipped cream.

It really doesnt need to try too hard tobedazzle or beguile, this car.

A little later at the hotel I took a trot in a six-speed manual T4, again loving the structure ofthe launch that allowed journalists to select a car

of their choice and drive on a loop from the hotel.Instead of being obliged to drive a set route that,on many launches, is often far, far longer as wellas, I shudder to say this, boring than is neededto gain driving impressions of the vehicle.

With 132kW and a maximum of 270Nm on tapfrom a 1.6-litre, four-cylinder petrol powerplant, the T4 hissed along with the sort of calming, balming composure that, to me, is so veryVo l vo .

The range, as you can see, is large indeed, butright now the V40 is only available in T3 manual,T4 manual, D2 manual, and D3 Geartronicderivatives. The remainder of the local line-upwill be available from March 2013, and therestalk of an all-wheel-drive version coming to SA,too.

The car is hailed as the safest, most intelligentVolvo yet. It includes a world-first a pedestrianairbag. Useful in SA where many pedestriansappear utterly unacquainted with even the mostrudimentary road safety knowledge, and wherejaywalking is more the norm than the excep-

tion. The V40 also gets Lane Keeping Aid with auto

steering, and the very clever Park Assist Pilot thatmakes parallel parking so much easier. Mean-while, the City Safety low-speed collision avoid-ance system has been further developed, and nowoperates at speeds up to 50km/h.

The car has also garnered the best ever rating inthe Euro NCAP collision test.

But you wont be wanting to try that ratheryoull be wanting to revel in the supremelyeffortless elegance of this machine. Indeed, theV40s is almost self-effacing in character, with aNordic understatement that makes some of itsTeutonic competitors appear just a little too boldand brash and bombastic.

The V40 goes on sale from November 15,2012, but you can test one now at a Volvodealership and place your order too.

And in the fullness of time well start testingindividual models.

After converting to Christianity 25 years ago Shammla Pillay was recently ordained as a pastor.

Pillay (57), better known to friends as Shammy, has been attending bible study classes at her home in Rishidath Road for the last four years. Pillay said that she was introduced to Christian-ity through an Irish friend, San-dra Teeney.

Pillay said that she had a sense that she was to become a pastor in the latter stages of her bible studies.

My intention is to bring peo-ple to a full and accurate knowl-

edge of God, said Pillay. Pillay, who was ordained by

Pastor Tony Corte-Real, offers free bible study classes from her home every Thursday and said everybody is welcome, regardless of race, religion or culture.

Pillay said that she has an attendance of 20-24 people on a weekly basis and is going to be looking for bigger premises in the near future.

Anybody interested in attend-ing Spirit Life Bible Studies can contact Pillay on 033 391 5988 or 078 371 1600 or by email shammyp@gmail.com.
