WHAT IS A PUMP?• A machine that imparts kinetic

and potential energy to a liquid to force a discharge from the machine.

• A machine that moves a volume of liquid from a lower to higher elevation or energy level

• A machine that moves liquid along a pipeline.

HORIZONTAL SPLIT CASE PUMP• Type of Centrifugal Pump

• Shaft & Impeller Horizontally Supported between Bearings

• Case Split at Shaft• Bottom or Side Suction

SYSTEM CURVES: HORIZONTAL / VERTICAL

HORIZONTAL SPLIT CASE PUMP - ADVANTAGES• Ease of Maintenance

• Fewer Bearings• Removable Casing• Easy Access• Shorter Duration of Downtime

• Generally Longer Life• High Efficiencies• Various Suction Orientations

• Flexibility in Station Arrangement• Mechanically Stable at Variable

Speeds• Lower Cost if Water Level is

Above Grade 10

HORIZONTAL SPLIT CASE PUMP – DISADVANTAGES• Larger Station Footprint - Typically• Pump & Appurtenances Below Water Level• Below Grade - Subject to Flooding

• Best Case Scenario - Build at Grade Level

• Capacity and Head Only Added with Additional or Replacement Pumps

11

VERTICAL TURBINE PUMPS - ADVANTAGES

• Smaller Station Footprint• Add Head with Stages• Naturally Steeper Curve

can Cover Large Head Range

12

VERTICAL TURBINE PUMP - DISADVANTAGES• Maintenance Burden

• Larger Number of Parts• Harder to Access Pumping Equipment• Increased Maintenance Downtime

• Lower Efficiencies• Requires Study & Modifications

if Variable Speed Applications
