Introduction

In many areas of the world today contaminated drinking water is an unfortunate everyday reality for millions of people.

One would believe that with all of the technological marvels of the modern world that no one should go without clean water or proper food.

The focus of the science and engineering team at ROK Water is exactly that, to develop systems large and small to purify water to standard suitable for human consumption and varying standards for agriculture and aquaculture etc.

The Pure ROK Solar concept

Every 15 Seconds a Child in Africa dies from dysentery as a result of biologically contaminated water sources.Research shows us that the only drinking water available to many people is from biologically contaminated water sources. Many of these people even though they live in a warm climate, some in arid regions, need to burn wood to cook food. In many areas this has an impact on the environment.We decided we could build a product to pasteurize water for drinking, cook meat, vegetables, soups and stews in one unit, using the sun’s energy.Boiling water should also be possible in the same unit, just taking a little longer.The product should be robust enough and long lasting for the harshest of environments and be simple to use.

• For boiling or pasteurising, water can be either placed directly in the glass tube or in the fluid container and inserted into the glass tube.

• The whole unit can be tipped to pour water directly out of the tube.

• Food can be placed in the food container for cooking.

• The unit is pointed at the sun and the leg extension is pulled out for wintertime use.

• The current units are designed around sun elevation in South Africa.

Performance/technical• The unit captures 0.35 m2 of sun’s energy.

• This equates to 110Wh of thermal energy.

• This is based on 1367 Wh extra terrestrial with 45% IR spectrum with 53% IR remaining after atmospheric losses.

• As the unit is designed to point straight at the sun, minimal incidence losses occur.
