Puritanism

Origin of Puritans

• Left England and Holland in order to break away from the Church of England and practice their religion their own way.

• William Bradford formed Plymouth Plantation in 1620–101 men, women, and children– In the spring only 50 had survived

The Bible

• Puritans took The Bible literally and it functioned as a code of their daily life.

Covenant

• Contract between God and believer. Free to enter, but once you do, you can’t break the contract.

Original Sin• We are all born sinners and life is

a process of working against this fact.

Original Sin

• The belief was that the natural tendency was towards sin; therefore, we must actively work against that tendency.

Predestination

• You are chosen by God before birth.

Irresistible Grace

• It is beyond our control whether or not God has chosen us to be saved.• You would never know whether you

were “saved” or not.

Even if you tried as hard as you could, you still might not make it unless you are one of the elect or chosen.

We can’t change the fact that we are sinners, so now what? –Live a disciplined, godly life–Be openly ambitious, hardworking,

and have an intense drive for success.
