Mission Statement:

A man’s body has been found frozen in the Alps between Austria and Italy.

As joint lead CSI in charge of the investigation, you must look through the evidence to find out all you can about this man.

CASE: OTZI THE ICEMANCASE: OTZI THE ICEMAN

Learning Intentions

Over the next three lessons I will learn:•Who was the iceman?•Why was his discovery important?

Success Criteria

By the end of the lessons I will be able to:

•Explain who the iceman is.•Explain the importance of his discovery.•Report on this by creating a newspaper report.

CASE: OTZI THE ICEMAN

• Otzi was discovered by two German hikers in September 1991 in the Alps between Austria and Italy.

• They first thought the body was of a missing hiker who had been caught in a bad storm.

• However, it soon became apparent that this was no ordinary body and various expert were called in including doctors, scientists, archaeologists, historians ….

And now you to tackle this case!!!

The Black Hand

CASE: OTZI THE ICEMAN

• After being taken back to the labs experts came up with the startling discovery that the body had been ‘deep frozen’.

• The Iceman was actually 5,500 years old.

• Making him the worlds oldest ice mummy.

From Otzi’s body being preserved by the ice and snow Greg has discovered in the labs that…

• 5 feet , four inches tall and weighed about 8 stone.

• He was about 40 years old.• He had brown eyes, hair and

clean shaven.• He had 47 tattoos• His last meal was meat and

bread.

Evidence of Otzi’s prehistoric Evidence of Otzi’s prehistoric existence…existence…

Evidence of Otzi’s prehistoric existence…

Otzi’s body was found with :

• A long bow snapped in two.•Backpack with wooden frame, containing arrows.•Bronze axe with a sharpened edge.

Evidence of Otzi’s prehistoric existence…

• Leather belt with pouch containing flints for fire lighting.

• Leather clothes padded with straw.• Snow boots made of fur and leather, lined

with grass and beach shavings.• Jewellery – a light coloured stone on a

leather string.

Ok, so from the evidence we know that Otzi the Iceman lived over 5,000 years ago. I need you to complete the following task to document this evidence for our investigation…

ActivityCorrectly label your iceman diagram illustrating the evidence that was found.

Write the question to these answers!!

1. The alps between Austria and Italy.2. 5,500 years old.3. 47.4. Meat and bread.

Ok, we need some more information to continue with the investigation…

Activity Whilst watching the documentary complete the questions to help us with our investigation.

We have collected all the evidence we have on Otzi the

Iceman…

So how did he die?

Archaeologists believe that the Ice Man died from exhaustion from protecting himself from a snowstorm. His frozen body lay where it died until it was found in 1991.

However, new evidence was discovered where an arrow head was found in Otzi’s shoulder making scientist believe he was attacked and died from his injuries.

So we have collected all the evidence and discussed the theories behind his death…

Now its your job to report!
