Why is a college education so important?

As technology & worker efficiency rapidly expand, the global job market is shifting away from high wage, low skill jobs to high/medium wage, high skill jobs. Jobs that once paid good wages are being replaced by technology or cheaper labor overseas. In the 21st Century, the jobs that command a family supporting wage require workers to have an advanced set of skills that the typical worker in the 20th century did not need.
