    2. InstallationandlicenseactivationWindPRO2.7 can run under Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7. Hardware requirements are as follows:Minimumspecificationisa1GHzPentiumprocessor,1GBRAM,1GBHDfreespace.Recommendedspecification is 2GHz processor, 2 GB RAM, 2 GB HD free space. Note that if you are runningWindows Vista, a multicore CPU is highly recommended. For 3DAnimator, a 3Dacceleratedgraphicscardisrequired.Whenyouinstallfromthe"original"WindPRODVDorUSBstick,youjustplugintheDVDorstickinthe computer, click on , the installation will start automatically after selecting"InstallWindPRO2.7"fromthemenu.FromaDOWNLOADorsimplyfromafile,whereWindPROisjustoneofmanyapplications,youneedtofindtheMSIfileandrunit.Theinstallationprogramwillguideyou through the installationon thescreen.Thedefault folder forWindPRO is:C:\ProgramFiles\EMD\WindPRO2.7\.StartupofWindPRO.WindPRO isstartedautomaticallyafter the installationorbyentering theStartmenuandclicktheAllPrograms|WindPRO|WindPRO2.7 icon. Select the software languageby clickingon thecorrespondingflag.

    ActivationThe license file is calledWindPRO2.7.erf and canbefoundontheWindPROUSBstickor inanemailfrom EMD if you have been in contactwith EMD(emd@emd.dk). In case you have received thelicense file by email, you should save it on yourcomputer from your email program. Click onBrowseandfindWindPRO2.7.erfontheUSBorthecomputer.After reading the license file, the End user licenseagreement must be accepted. Click on Next to thewindow Activation information.Assuming you are anenduser, justwrite yournameandemail twice in theform.InthewindowSelectmoduleselectionmethod,acceptActivateAllmodulesbyclickingonNext.InthewindowEnteractivationcode,youneedtoentertheactivationcodewhichwassenttotheemailaddressthatyoutypedinpreviously.ClickonNextandthelicenseshouldnowbesuccessfullyactivated.

    3. Startaproject

    3.1 TheProjectExplorer

    WindPRO starts with the Globe the Project Explorer view: a useful tool for managing yourprojects.AsmallwindowwillaskyouDoyouwanttoautoupdatethe listofprojects?clickonYes.Redspotswillappear.Theystand for thesampleprojectsavailable inWindPROData\Samples (whichcanbefoundundermydocumentsorC:\driveronacomputerwithaformerWindPROversion).Donotdoubleclickononeoftheseredspotsbecauseitwillopenanexistingproject(keepthisforlater).Thepurposeofthisquickguideisindeedtomakeyoucreateanewprojectfromscratch.Add a user layer as a backdrop for the map this uses GIS data in the ESRI SHP format:

    Selectthe"WindPROData\Globe\Europe\Europeanwindatlas.shp"file.Clickonacolourregionandseethecountryandthewindspeed intervalatthesametime inthe"searchuser layerfield".Nowyouhavean ideawhichpossibilitiestheglobeoffersyouexplorefurtherdetailslater.

    3.2 Createaproject

    LetscreateaprojectinDenmarkforwhichdataareincludedintheinstallationofWindPRO.Trytofind Denmark and zoom in on the country. Select the "new project" crosshair by clicking it

    andplaceit(click)nexttothecoloredspotatthe"nosetip"ofJutland,Denmark(Ebeltoft)asshowonthefollowingfigure.

    Selectthecountry(Denmark)underSiteifitismissing.Selectthetimezone:(GMT+01:00)Copenhaguen,Stockholm,OlsoGo to the tab sheet Coordinate System. Select the UTM ED50 zone 32. WindPRO willautomaticallyfindtherelevantzonebasedonthepositionoftheprojectsiteontheglobe.NowclickonthetabsheetBackgroundMaps.

    3.3 Attachmentofmaps

    UsingbackgroundmapsisoneofthegreatadvantageswhenworkingwithWindPROandwerecommendyoutoaddsome(thesoftwarecanalsobeusedwithoutdigitalbackgroundmaps).ManypredefinedformatscanbeaddedasgeoreferencedmapsoryoucandefineyourownscannedmapsyourselfwiththeMAPDEFtool.ForthisDEMOtour,therearesomepreviouslygeoreferencedmapsavailablesavedas.BMIfiles.

    Double click on the icon BMI file and then browse the following directoryC:\\WindPROData\samples\Ebeltoft\maps,SelectEbe25k.bmi,ClickOK.

    DoubleclickagainontheBMIfilebuttonandselectEbe50k.bmi,ClickOK.Younowhavetwomapsindifferentscales,whichcanbeusedfortheproject.

    3.4 DefiningtheSitecenter

    Nowclickononeofthemapsinthelisttohighlightit,andthenonView/setsitecentre.Thehighlightedmapfromyourlististhenloaded.

    Ifyouroriginalsitecentre (madewiththecrosshairontheglobe) isoutsidetheattachedmap,theglobewillbeshownasbackground,andthemapbordersasrectangles.Clicknow

    Drag themaparoundbyholdingdown the leftmousebuttonwhilemoving themouse.Find the harbour at Ebeltoft.With a single clickwith the leftmouse button,when themouse isheldstill,aredXcanbeplaced this isyourSitecentre,and itmeansthatthispointwillbecenteredonthescreenwhenmapsareloadedlateron.Ifyouwanttochangethesitecentre,justmarkanotherlocation.ClickOKtothemapviewerandthenOKinthemainformandleaveProjectProperties.

    NewWTGsarecreatedsimplyby leftclickonthe"newWTG"symbol inrightbuttoncolumnandthenleftclickontothedesiredpositiononthemap.TheWTGtypeisselectedfrom theWTGCatalogvia the listbox.Selecting ""giveyouaccess to thecompleteWTGCatalog.BydefiningsearchprofilesitisfasttofindthedesiredWTGforanycalculation.ThecatalogueisupdatedbyEMDwhennewinformationissuppliedbyturbinemanufacturers.

    SelectaWTGtypefromtheWTGexplorerwithadoubleclick.

    4.3 Insertingsimplewinddata

    AfteryouhavelocatedyourWTGsyouneedtodecidewhichtypesofcalculationsyouwishtoperform:energyproduction,noise,visualization,etc.Thetypesofcalculationsdeterminewhichadditionalobjectsyouwillneed.Forexample inthefollowing,wewilldescribeoneoftheverysimpleones:ENERGYcalculation,basedonmeasuredmeanwindspeedatthewindfarm.

    Choose theMeteoObject andplace itwhere thewindmeasurementsweremade(assumethatthesewereonshore,justtotherightofthewindfarm).

    YouwillbetakentotheGuidetab.SelectGoWeibull.

    Inputtheheightofmeasurement(10m)inthecellonthetopleftcorner.Set number of sectors to 1.Select InputMeanWind Speed and enter the values asshownabove(MeanWindSpeed=7.0m/s,kparameter=2andfrequency=1)).

    TesttheGraphics/Weibullandtakealookatthegraphs.ClickOK.You have now the relevant data (WTG type and wind data) for a very simple energycalculation. Notice that the WindPRO software knows the coordinates of your objects,which is important information for later calculations, for documentation for authorities,etc.

    5. Calculationsandresult

    WhenallthenecessaryobjectshavebeencreatedyoucanreturntotheWindPROmainmenuby

    clickingthecalculationtreebutton oratthebottomon .

    A calculation is startedby clicking the greenor yellowbutton (arrow) next to the required

    calculation.NB:Nonlicensedmoduleswillappearwithayellowbutton indicatingthatyoucannotperformcalculationswiththesemodules.AskEMDforatemporarylicencetotrybeforeyoubuy.

    Select:

    Youcannowchoosesomedifferentcalculationsetupvalues,butthedefaultvaluesarenormallygood enough just click theOK button and the calculationwill begin. Please note that in theDEMOversionyouwillnotbeabletoperformthecalculation.Insteadyouhavetheopportunitytoopenthehelpfilewiththemoduledescriptionsandprinttheexamples.Sheardataisrequiredtoextrapolatethewindfrom10mtothehubheight.SelectUserdefinedinthedropdownmenuandinsertaPowerlawexponentof0.1.

    ParkDesignOnlyavailablewithOPTIMIZElicense.Createlargewindfarmlayoutswithmultiplerowsinstrictlygeometricpatterns (forexampleoffshore).TogetherwiththeWTGareaobject, theParkdesignobjectcan"autorealize"WTGslimitedtononrestrictedareas.

    Pleasenote,thatthesoftwarecalculatesa"Triangular IrregularNetwork"(TIN),which isaheightmodelwhere all points are used for creating triangles. Thismakes the softwareready for calculating the Zlevel (altitude) at anypoint inside the TIN radius (the yellowcircle),whichbydefaultis3000m,butcanbechangedintheObjectPropertiesinthetabsheet"Presentation".Movethecursoraroundandsee inthebottomofthewindowhowtheZvalueisupdated.Heightcontoursdatacanbe loaded inmany file formats;youcanalsomanuallyeditandchange theheightdata.Lastbutnot leastyoucan load theNASAsourcedShuttleRadarTopographyMissionheightdatafromInternet.Thesedataareavailableforfreeformostoftheglobe.

    7.2 ExportingtoGoogleEarth

    InordertoexportanyobjectsfromWindPROtoGoogleEarth,youneedtobeconnectedtoInternetandtohaveGoogleEarthinstalledonyourcomputer(http://earth.google.com).
