They don’t pay you for winning
barrier trials, but a lot can hinge
on the early season results for the
heavily invested studmasters who
have two-year-olds by their unproven young
stallions hitting the track as the latest breeding
year reaches its peak.
In Sydney this morning, two juvenile barrier
trials will be conducted at Randwick, a precursor
to the official two-year-old heats scheduled for
the Kensington track in 13 days’ time, and the
progeny of a number of first season sires such
as Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt), Shalaa
(Invincible Spirit), Maurice (Screen Hero), and
Divine Prophet (Choisir) will step out in public
for the first time. Continued on page 2>>

Winning Rupert (Written Tycoon) and
Flying Artie (Artie Schiller) are also represented.
In Melbourne on Thursday, a number of juveniles by first season
sires, including Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Capitalist (Written
Tycoon), Woodside Park’s shuttler Cable Bay (Invincible Spirit) and
Eureka Stud’s Defcon (Choisir) will be represented in the jump outs
scheduled at Sandown.
Arrowfield’s Paul Messara, who plays on both sides of the fence as a
studmaster and trainer, will be represented by a Shalaa colt he prepares
Silver City who is in heat 11 over 740 metres.
“The Shalaa I obviously train, so I know a little bit about him. He’s
pretty straightforward but I’m not sure he’ll show his best tomorrow,”
Messara said yesterday.
“I think he’ll improve a lot for the outing because he’s a very relaxed
horse, so he hasn’t really switched on yet but hopefully that will be
activated tomorrow.”
Messara’s prediction that Shalaa could challenge for champion two-
year-old sire by the end of the season may prove accurate with four two-
year-olds by the sire also slated to jump out at Sandown, including an
unnamed Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained half-sister to David
Payne’s VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) bound Montefilia (Kermadec) with
stablemate Seasmit by the sire entered for heat seven.
Fellow Caulfield trainer John Moloney will unveil Shalaa filly Shalam
and John Sadler will let Cheerful
Legend off the leash in heat six.
“We’ve been getting very
good feedback and we’d expect
them to be early, good and
two-year-olds given he was
the champion two-year-old in
Europe and won a couple of
high-class Group 1s at two,” he
said.
“Shalaa has crossed
beautifully with our stock out
here in Australia, our local
breeds with a bit of precocity
about them, and with his speed over the top I can imagine plenty of them
being around.
“I know Kris Lees, who I spoke to the other day, he told me his best
two-year-old was a Shalaa and that was encouraging, so around the traps
once again there’s plenty of talk which is encouraging.”
Fellow Arrowfield shuttler Maurice, dubbed The Beast from the East,
has Maurice’s Medad trained by Bjorn Baker in heat 11 at Randwick, while
filly, I Love Lucy (Lee Curtis), is accepted for heat ten.
“We didn’t dream that he would have horses at the trials this early. We
thought he’d be a post-Christmas type of a stallion, just given his profile
and the types of horses that he’s thrown but obviously they’re showing a
lot of ability and speed,” Messara said.
“I know Trent Busuttin has had a few Maurices who have had unofficial
trials down at Cranbourne and he had a couple who cleared out and won
trials by a big space, so I know he is very keen on them.
“The talk around town is very positive.”
Eureka Stud’s Black Opal Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) winner Defcon
(Choisir) will also be represented at the Sandown jump outs with the
Maher and Eustace-trained Defcon One, an $85,000 Magic Millions Gold
Coast Yearling Sale graduate, entered in heat eight.
A colt by Woodside Park Stud shuttler Cable Bay (Invincible Spirit) named
Telegraph, who was a $160,000 Magic Millions purchase by co-trainer Mick Price
and agent Dermot Farrington, is in heat eight.

Mr Mosaic (Rubick) made it three wins in four starts when he blitzed his Warwick Farm rivals yesterday and in the process came agonisingly close to setting a new track record. The Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou-trained four-year-old got to within 1/100th of a second of Snitzerland’s 1000-metre track record when covering the course in a speedy 56.17 seconds. Woodside Park Stud chief executive
James Price said two-year-olds who were capable of trialling and racing at
this time of year were indicative of mature and professional horses.
“I think it’s all part of when these buyers go to the yearling sales, it’s
not all just about the pedigree and physique, it’s the horse’s temperament
and if they can cope with a yearling sale it generally translates to coping
with stable life which is so important, particularly for these early two-year-
old trials,” Price said.
“Even to get to this point with trials and a race, you have got to have a
pretty mature physical and probably even more important is a pretty mature
mind, so it’s very important, especially when we’re only in early September.”
The flow-on effect from an eye-catching trialler for studmasters
standing the traditionally tricky fourth-season stallions can also help in
attracting breeders this year.
“You only need one good trial performer and word starts to get
around,” Price said.
“Trainers start to talk to each other and talk to their owners. It’s
amazing how the phone rings, so we are a fairly fashion-driven industry,
so if you’ve got the fashion and if that’s a two-year-old trial winner or race
winner at this time of year it will most certainly help bookings.”
Edward Cummings will start Three Wise Men, a son of Divine Prophet
(Choisir), in heat 11 at Randwick today and Aquis Farm’s chief executive
Tony “Tubba” Williams believes the signs are positive for the Caulfield
Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner.
There is a chance, Williams says, that more Divine Prophets could
be exposed in the coming weeks after hearing encouraging reports from
trainers such as Will Clarken in Adelaide, Warrnambool-based Dan
Bowman and Stuart Kendrick in Queensland.
“Two-year-old racing has changed dramatically in Australia from
when I first started 45 years ago,” Williams said.
“There are not as many early
races as there used to be and
there’s not as many young horses
being pushed to get there early. We
have evolved into getting closer to
Christmas when the two-year-old
races really crank up.
“Obviously, Divine Prophet is
a horse I can see having a lot more coming through at the end of the year in
November and December, but it is good to see he has one in this early trial
and there are others out there who will trial early, so that’s all promising.”
Progeny of Newgate stallions step outNewgate Farm has made its mark - and quickly - in the stallion ranks
by acquiring the likes of 2016 Slipper winner Capitalist, Blue Diamond (Gr
1, 1200m) winner Extreme Choice, Coolmore winner Flying Artie and the
former Bjorn Baker-trained sprinter Winning Rupert to go to stud in 2017.
Extreme Choice, who also won the 2016 A J Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m),
sired a trial winner in New Zealand last week and has Chameleon Choice,
a Kingstar Farm-bred colt trained by Matthew Smith, and the Sledmere
Stud-sold, Lee Curtis-trained filly Avaricious in trials in Sydney today.
The Lloyd Kennewell-trained Abseiler will also compete in heat seven
at Sandown later in the week.
“Extreme Choice has got a very small crop of 40-odd, so to have a
trial winner already and two trialling on Tuesday is very encouraging,”
Newgate Farm principal Henry Field said.
“Winning Rupert has got a sharp colt called Keith who Bjorn Baker is
trialling and we’ve got a horse called Schwarzenegger by Flying Artie with
Ciaron Maher who we couldn’t sell as a yearling who is trialling on Tuesday
as well.
“It’s great when young stallions have that quantity of triallers at the
first trials, it is only a small part of the equation but it is definitely a great
indication that they are straight-forward and sound racehorses and are
able to get there early.”
But Field, regardless of the trial results, will not be jumping to
conclusions.
“At the end of the day, the winning post is everything, but it is such an
exciting time for all the studmasters when these stallions have their first
runners and first triallers,” he said.
“It’s an exciting time and it’s a little bit like waiting for Christmas
morning to see what’s inside the box.”
Winning Rupert also has two juveniles jumping out at Sandown, the
Mick Price and Mick Kent Jr-trained colt Media Empire, and an unnamed
filly trained by Maher and Eustace out of Funlove (Shovhog).
The Maher and Eustace team also have an unnamed Capitalist filly out of
Miss Tomb Raider (Snitzel) down to jump out, while Kennewell has a colt by
the stallion out of Listed winner
Golconda (Snitzel) having a hit
out. The Sadler-trained Capital
Legend (Capitalist) will also be
tested on Thursday.
Flying Artie also has two
colts jumping out, with an
unnamed son of Canary (Hard
Spun) (Maher-Eustace) and the
Kennewell-trained half-brother
to dual Group 2 winner Pure
Elation (I Am Invincible) entered
for heats.

Negative result after Flemington Covid scareTraining at Flemington will go ahead as normal
this morning after a staff member of Gai
Waterhouse and Adrian Bott’s Melbourne stable
was cleared of Covid-19. The champion trainer’s
Melbourne stable was closed yesterday as fears
grew about the possibility of an employee, who
had gone home sick earlier in the day, had
contracted the coronavirus but Racing Victoria
last night confirmed that a test for the illness had
returned negative. “As a result, the Waterhouse-
Bott stable is free to resume normal training
activities at Flemington (today), noting that the
staff member in question will not resume duties
until they have returned to full health,” a Racing
Victoria spokesman said last night. Earlier, the
Flemington stable was placed in lockdown
and the communal walker was closed for deep
cleaning.
Fierce Impact readyfor Makybe tiltTwo-time Group 1 winner Fierce Impact (Deep
Impact) will return to the course and distance
of his most recent top-level win on Saturday
when he contests the Makybe Diva Stakes (Gr
1, 1600m) at Flemington. The Matthew Smith-
trained Fierce Impact scored his first Group 1
win in the Toorak Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) at
Caulfield before he took the Cantala Stakes (Gr
1, 1600m) at Flemington. First-up this spring,
he finished third to Verry Elleegant (Zed) in the
Winx Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) in what will be his
only Sydney run this preparation as he plots a
path towards the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m). "It
was an excellent return to racing. It was good to
see him come back in that manner as an older
horse," Smith said. "His work has been good
since, but it has been all preparation. He's been
really good this preparation. For a seven-year-
old stallion he's going about everything really
professionally.”
Camelot forward for Makybe
Danny O’Brien says fitness will not be a concern
when his South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m)
winner Russian Camelot (Camelot) steps out
for the Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington on
Saturday. The current Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m)
favourite will return for the first time since that
breakthrough success at Group 1 level in May.
“Fitness won’t be any problem - the horse is
more than fit enough,” O’Brien told Racing.
com. “It’s just a matter of whether he can win
a group 1 race at a mile I suppose. That’s what
he’s got to get over. He was very good in group
1 class last time (SA Derby in autumn) but his
last run at a mile was in a (Benchmark) 64. It’s
another thing entirely to win a mile weight-for-
age race for him but he’s a very talented horse
and we’re certainly not ruling it out.”
Farnan early favourite for Run To The RoseThe Run To The Rose (Gr 2, 1200m) looms as
the early race of the season with a strong group
of three-year-olds set to battle around the
Rosehill hairpin. Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1,
1200m) winner Farnan (Not A Single Doubt)
was the early favourite at $2.80 with TAB last
night, although he is aiming to become just the
fifth Golden Slipper winner in the last 20 years
to win at their first run of the spring. He would
also be only the second Slipper winner to win
The Run To The Rose at the same course and
distance as the juvenile feature, joining Pierro
(Lonhro). Queenslander Rothfire (Rothesay),
also a Group 1 winner, is second favourite
at $4.50, while Up And Coming Stakes (Gr 3,
1300m) victor North Pacific (Brazen Beau) and
San Domenico Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) conqueror
Anders (Not A Single Doubt) are at $5 and $7
respectively. The third of the Group 1 winners,
King’s Legacy (Redoute’s Choice), is at $11.
Queenslandersset for returnJ J Atkins (Gr 1, 1400m) winner Rothfire
(Rothesay), Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m)
hero Tyzone (Written Tycoon) and Group 1
performer Outback Barbie (Spirit Of Boom) will
all step out for the first time since June when
they run at Rosehill on Saturday. The Robert
Heathcote-prepared Rothfire will make his
Sydney debut in The Run To The Rose (Gr 2,
1200m), the Toby and Trent Edmonds-trained
Tyzone will run in the Theo Marks Stakes
(Gr 2, 1300m), while Tony Gollan’s Outback
Barbie will have her first Sydney run in almost
two years when she lines up in the Sheraco
Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m). Jim Byrne will ride all
three horses, with Gollan thrilled to get Byrne
- Outback Barbie’s regular partner - for the
five-year-old mare. "Her work on Tuesday was
terrific and she's coming along beautifully,"
Gollan said.

Pride’s Everest hopefuls on showJoe Pride hopes that Fasika (So You Think) and
Eduardo (Host) can put their cases forward
to be selected for the $15 million The Everest
(1200m), but the trainer is letting both horses
advertise themselves rather than spruiking
their prospects. "She (Fasika) runs this week,
he (Eduardo) runs the week after in The Shorts.
They're not colts so they've got to do their
talking on the racetrack," Pride said. "People
know I want to get them in. If he knocks them
off in The Shorts he is a logical pick for someone.
There will be drop outs, there always is." Fasika
resumes in this Saturday’s Sheraco Stakes (Gr
2, 1200m) and geared up for her return with a
trial win over impressive Concorde Stakes (Gr
3, 1000m) winner Gytrash (Lope De Vega). "She
will most likely go there and then the (Golden)
Pendant over 1400 metres," Pride said. "If she
did go to The Everest, my plan would be to go
there third-up, three weeks between runs. I like
the idea of coming back slightly in distance with
my horses, they really hit the line when I do it."
Gytrash straight to EverestTrainer Gordon Richards has revealed his
Everest (1200m) contender Gytrash (Lope De
Vega) will head straight to the world’s richest
turf race on October 17 after his stunning win in
the Concorde Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) at Randwick
on Saturday. “I tossed around a few ideas after
his win on the weekend,” Richards told Racing.
com. "I initially had planned to run him in a
fortnight in The Shorts or there is another race
in four weeks but ultimately I’m comfortable
going straight to The Everest without another
run.”
Rupert Clarke for TagaloaThe Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) is
the next port of call for Blue Diamond Stakes
(Gr 1, 1200m) winner Tagaloa (Lord Kanaloa),
as trainers Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young
plot a path towards the Caulfield Guineas (Gr
1, 1600m). Tagaloa finished third in the McNeil
Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) fresh, when he was just
caught after racing clear early in the straight. "I
was a little disappointed he didn't win his first-
up run because when you've got a horse of that
ability, you just expect them to win and you
want them to win everything especially with his
value as a colt," owner Ozzie Kheir told Racing.
com. "I thought after watching the replay that
his run first-up was enormous. It was against
the breeze there, he was three wide and stuck
on really well finishing third. It took a lot out of
him being his first run, so we decided not to go
to the Danehill and give him an extra week. So
we will go to the Rupert Clarke, it's a Group 1,
he will get in first around 54 kilograms and have
his chance there. We might look at riding him
a little quieter than we have been. He's always
had to do all the work and be on pace. We will
look at that going into the Guineas with that
being his grand final. From there we will assess,
if he comes through that run and he still has gas
in the tank then we will look at the Cox Plate if
he is up to that level."
Racing Victoria calls for whip reviewRacing Victoria (RV) yesterday announced
that it was seeking to reform whip rules
across the Australian industry before the end
of the year in what is the strongest response
by a governing body to the discussion around
use of the whip. The current Australian
Rules of Racing permit the use of the whip a
maximum of five times in non-consecutive
strides prior to the 100-metre mark, before
essentially allowing a rider to use it unlimited
times and in consecutive strides over the final
100 metres. Racing Victoria will seek a vote
from the Racing Australia board in November
with the intention of restricting use of the
whip to between five and eight total strikes
in a race, all in non-consecutive strides.
“RV believes that the current national whip
rules are no longer appropriate and not in
the best interests of Victorian and Australian
racing, both now and in the long-term,” said
RV in a statement, with chief executive Giles
Thompson adding: “It is Racing Victoria’s
view that progress on whip reform is needed
now, and that the industry nationally,
acting in its best long-term interests, should
continue to work towards a prohibition on
the use of the whip for purposes other than
to protect the safety of horses and jockeys. It
is critical that jockeys are permitted to carry a
whip to ensure their safety and jockey safety
is something that we will always advocate.”
Lack of consultation stuns participantsReaction to the Racing Victoria announcement
was mixed, but the Victorian Jockeys’
Association (VJA) and the Australian Trainers’
Association (ATA) both expressed concern that
they had not been consulted about the proposed
changes, nor had their members been given any
advance notice that such an announcement
was imminent. “It would have been nice given
it does affect our group of people,” Matthew
Hyland, chief of the VJA, told Racing.com. “It’s
pretty clear cut as to what RV’s position is but
it would have been nice to have a heads-up on
that and certainly to give our members and
our directors some indication as to what was
coming. There has been discussion around the
whip ever since last year’s Melbourne Cup. I had
some meetings with Giles Thompson around
that but over the past four or five months it
hasn’t been raised other than the whip penalty
template, which was discussed and all the
riders expected that was the new template we
were working off and that was that but that’s
clearly not where RV were leaving it.” Robbie
Griffiths, ATA presiden, added: “As president,
I have been extremely complimentary on
how well our industry has dealt with Covid.
How united and how strong we’ve been and
so I am so disappointed we’ve had something
dropped on us like this. What we want on any
topic – and this is a big one – is the right sort of
consultation. I am really disappointed they did
this without consulting. I mean we consult on
pretty much everything else. We know that any
topic to do with a perception issue like the whip
rule needs exhaustive consultation because it’s
in everyone’s face.”

Racing Australia hits out at RVCriticism of the Racing Victoria announcement
also came from an unlikely source with
Racing Australia attacking the “breach of
Board confidentiality” that came from Racing
Victoria highlighting the process that had been
undertaken to date. Racing Australia has over
recent months established a Riding Protocols
Advisory Panel (The Panel) with Principal
Racing Authorities (PRAs) being represented.
The first meeting of The Panel will take place
this month,” Racing Australia’s statement said.
“Prior to establishing The Panel, in July 2020 the
Racing Australia Board met and consulted with
a number of eminent trainers and jockeys. The
purpose of The Panel is to provide comment/
advice to the Racing Australia Board in relation
to riding protocol matters to ensure positive
outcomes are achieved for riders and horses and
to foster ongoing confidence in the Australian
thoroughbred racing industry. This national
review will continue to run concurrent with the
agreed position of the Racing Australia Board at
its August Board Meeting notwithstanding the
announcement by Racing Victoria today. The
Panel will take into consideration the views of
all PRAs when presenting its report to the Racing
Australia Board for consideration. The Panel
will provide an update at the next meeting of
the Racing Australia Board in November 2020,
the timeline of a final decision will then be
determined by the Racing Australia Board. What is
concerning is the breach of Board confidentiality.
It is important that Racing Australia conducts a
vigorous debate and won’t condone any breach
of Board confidentiality. Open and robust
discussion cannot be undermined by a breach of
Board confidentiality.”
Libertini to trialForgotten mare Libertini (I Am Invincible)
will return at the Randwick trials this morning
ahead of a potential throw at the stumps for
The Everest (1200m). The Anthony Cummings
trainee looked to have the world at her feet after
winning the Silver Shadow Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m)
and the Furious Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m), as well
as finishing third in the Coolmore Stud Stakes
(Gr 1, 1200m). However, she disappointed in
the autumn and was spelled with a hind limb
injury. Her return could come in The Shorts (Gr
2, 1100m) on September 19, where she would
meet a number of Everest contenders.
Loos fined over strangles outbreakGeelong trainer Danielle Loos has been fined
$2,000 by Racing Victoria stewards after her
charge Naval Envoy (Smug) raced at Moonee
Valley on July 12 while positive for strangles.
The positive strangles case was only detected in
post-race testing after Naval Envoy finished last
as the $3.80 second favourite. Naval Envoy had
spiked a temperature early in his preparation, for
which Loos sought veterinary advice, but when
he developed an abscess - a common symptom
of strangles - she did not seek veterinary advice.
Loos was charged with breaching AR228 (a)
as, by not seeking veterinary advice for the
abscess, she was negligent in a manner that
could have prejudiced the welfare of racing. No
other horses tested positive for strangles.
Vale Keith WatsonGroup 1-winning jockey Keith Watson died
yesterday, drowning after his boat sank just
off Broome in the early hours of the morning.
Watson, who rode Heron Bridge (Tudor Bridge)
to win the Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m)
at Flemington in 1984, was reported to have been
sailing in the Kimberley region with three others,
also from the racing community, over the past
couple of weeks. Their vessel began to sink, and
so the four men - all in their 70s - decided to swim
to a nearby boat. In a statement, police said that
only three of the men survived, with Watson’s
body found in the water. Racing and Wagering WA
general manager of racing Charlotte Mills paid
tribute to Mr Watson. “RWWA is saddened by the
news of Keith Watson’s passing and we extend our
deepest condolences to his family and friends,”
she said. “Keith was a well-respected member of
the racing community and was a leading jockey
in WA for many years. His legacy is one that will
always be remembered.”
NEW ZEALAND
Strong backstory for Sweynesse’s Only WordsA lease arrangement brokered by Novara Park
principal Luigi Muollo has allowed Sweynesse’s
former trackwork rider to share in his black-
type success at stud. Muollo bred the Sweynesse
(Lonhro) filly Only Words, who scored an
impressive victory in Saturday’s Wanganui
Guineas (Listed, 1200m). She became the second
stakes winner for Sweynesse, who was New
Zealand’s leading first season stallion in 2019-
20 and has now begun his second season on the
perfect note. After Only Words was passed in as a
weanling at the Karaka May Sale, Muollo leased
her to Te Awamutu trainer Clinton Isdale, who
shares ownership with Asian World Racing Ltd.
“It’s turned out to be quite a special story,” Muollo
said. “Clint used to work for Godolphin, and he
actually rode Sweynesse in trackwork during
the time he was there. He rode a few good ones
for Godolphin, but when we brought Sweynesse
over to stand at Novara Park, he came to me and
said he thought he was the best he’d ridden. I was
quite stunned when he told me that. We’ve stayed
in touch, and that’s how the lease arrangement
came about. For Clint to win the Wanganui
Guineas with a daughter of Sweynesse is an
amazing thrill for him and for me.”
Princess Kereru retiredThe Ken and Bev Kelso-trained Princess Kereru
(Pins) has been retired after finishing 11th in
Saturday’s Foxbridge Plate (Gr 2, 1200m). The
seven-year-old finished nine-and-a-half lengths
in arrears of impressive winner Avantage (Fastnet
Rock), a far cry from her best form where she was
a Group 3 winner and was narrowly beaten into
second in the 2019 Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m).
“She was going to stud this year anyway and has a
booking to Almanzor,” Ken Kelso said. “The plan
was to race her and if her form warranted it to race
her on in-foal. But it was a sub-par performance
on Saturday, and we thought it best that she be
retired now. She’s probably done enough.” Bred
and raced by Paul Humphries and his sons Kevan,
Richard and Michael, Princess Kereru won seven
of 30 starts, with a further 10 placings. “It’s just
unfortunate that she didn’t win the Railway, but
she couldn’t have done much better, she’s Group
1-placed and a Group 3 winner,” Kelso said. “She’s
also Group 2-placed and a Listed winner. She’s
been a bonny little mare and she’s done us and
the owners proud. She’s a seven-year-old mare so
it’s time to look for a new career.”

Russell enjoying winning streak with Hurry CaneThomas Russell’s hands-on involvement
with racing was cut short just over six years
ago through a life-threatening injury, but the
former jockey and trainer is still enjoying the
thrill of the thoroughbred sport as a part-
owner and jockey’s agent. The 38-year-old
Russell, who has been a tetraplegic since a
trackwork fall, is co-owner of the in-form
Hurry Cane (Nom Du Jeu), a decisive winner
of the Foxton Cup (2000m) at Wanganui
last Saturday, and he is agent for central
districts jockey Leah Hemi. Last year, Russell
experienced one of his biggest highlights
as a jockey’s agent when Hemi guided Dee
And Gee (Darci Brahma) to victory in the
New Zealand Cup (Gr 3, 3200m) and now
his hopes rest on Hurry Cane providing him
with an even bigger highlight in the same
Riccarton feature on November 14. “It was a
special win when Leah won it last year with
what Terrill Charles had been going through,”
he said referring to the lengthy battle with
cancer experienced by Charles, who trains
Dee And Gee in partnership with her partner,
Peter Corbett. “It would be a huge thrill if I
can win it this year as an owner. I didn’t have
much luck with the few rides I had in it as a
jockey. It’ll be tough for Hurry Cane, but he’s
racing well.”
INTERNATIONAL
First for Nyquist On a weekend in which the Kentucky Derby
(Gr 1, 10f) was held in a foreign September slot,
2016 winner Nyquist (Uncle Mo) registered his
first Grade 1 winner - and his second stakes
victor overall - when Vequist (2 f ex Vero Amore
by Mineshaft) took out the Spinaway Stakes
(Gr 1, 7f) at Saratoga on Sunday. The Robert
‘Butch’ Reid Jr-trained Vequist, who was beaten
at her first start in a Parx maiden in late July,
was having just her second start on Sunday
and she started on the third line of betting.
However, after tracking early leader Esplanande
(Daredevil), the filly was asked for an effort
by Luis Saez beyond the quarter pole and she
raced away for an easy nine and a half length
win. Esplanande held down second, with Lady
Lilly (Nyquist) in third, a further length and a
half away. Retained by her breeders Swilcan
Stable after she was twice passed in at the sales,
prominent owner, Spyglass Entertainment co-
founder Gary Barber, bought a controlling share
in Vequist after her debut with the filly racing
in his eye-catching pink and black colours in
the Spinaway. Nyquist (Uncle Mo), who has
his first runners on the track this season, stood
for US$40,000 (approx A$55,000) at Darley’s
Jonabell Farm in Kentucky in 2020.
First for Not This TimeNorth America’s leading freshman sire Not This
Time (Giant’s Causeway) brought up his first
individual stakes winner in the best way possible,
producing a Grade 1 winner straight out of the
gates on Sunday. Princess Noor (2 f ex Sheza
Smoke Show by Wilko) was incredibly impressive
in winning the Del Mar Debutante (Gr 1, 7f) to
cap a banner weekend for trainer Bob Baffert. The
Saudi Arabia-owned filly, who was having just her
second start, was sent out as odds-on favourite
and never looked in any danger under Victor
Espinoza, scooting away for a six-and-a-half-
length success. Forest Caraway (Bodemeister)
finished second, with Illumination (Medaglia
d’Oro) a further two and a quarter lengths away in
third. Princess Noor was sold for just US$135,000
(approx A$185,600) at last year’s Keeneland
September Yearling Sale, but she was pinhooked
at this year’s Ocala Breeders’ Sales Spring Sale of
Two-Year-Olds in Training in June. Her breeze-up
was widely seen to be one of the best recorded in
many a year and, consequently, Zedan Racing
Stables’ racing manager Gary Young purchased
her for US$1.35 million (approx A$1.86 million).
Not This Time stood for a relatively meagre
US$12,500 (approx A$17,200) at Taylor Made
Farms in 2020.
87 for City ZipUmberto Rispoli’s career-long wait to sport the
Godolphin silks paid off handsomely at Del
Mar on Sunday when Pixelate (3 c ex Speckled
by Street Cry) took out the Del Mar Derby (Gr 2,
9f), giving the late City Zip (Carson City) his 87th
individual stakes winner. The Michael Stidham-
trained Pixelate, who was yet to win from his
first five starts as a three-year-old, was still sent
out as favourite with Rispoli the leading rider
at the Del Mar meet so far. Racing handy, he
was brought through with a late surge to grab
Margot's Boy (Clubhouse Ride) by a head, with
longshot Dominant Soul (Dominus) a length
and a quarter away in third after leading. City
Zip was euthanized at Lane’s End Farm in 2017.
First US stakes winner for VancouverGolden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner
Vancouver (Medaglia d’Oro) has been
having a strong season with his first northern
hemisphere runners in the United States
and the Coolmore stallion recorded his first
American stakes winner - and his third overall
- when Madone (2 f ex Indian Love Call by
Cherokee Run) took out the Del Mar Juvenile
Fillies Turf (Listed, 1m) on Sunday. Trained by
Simon Callaghan and ridden by Flavien Prat,
Madone stumbled at the start but was patiently
ridden by the Frenchman, before being brought
wide into the stretch. She finished off strongly
to take victory by a half length, remaining
unbeaten from two starts. Nimbostratus
(Wootton Bassett) was second across the line,
a nose ahead of Ivy League (Medaglia d’Oro),
but the placings were reversed after it was
determined that Nimbostratus shifted out and
caused interference approaching the final half-
furlong. Madone has gone through the sales
ring three times, fetching US$70,000 (approx
A$96,200) as a weanling at the 2018 Keeneland
November Breeding Stock Sale, US$50,000
(approx A$68,700) at last year’s Keeneland
September Yearling Sale and then selling for
US$125,000 (approx A$171,800) at this year’s
Ocala Breeders’ Sales March Sale of Two-Year-
Olds in Training. Vancouver stands for A$30,250
(inc GST) at Coolmore Australia this year.
Melbourne Cup runner-up switches farmsAfter serving just 14 mares in his first season at
stud, 2018 Melbourne Cup runner-up Marmelo
(Duke Of Marmalade) has been transferred in
order to give him a greater chance of success.
Marmelo was based at Haras du Grand
Courgeon in Lion d’Angers, but only served 14
mares at a fee of €3,500 (approx A$5,600). Next
year, he will stand for €2,500 (approx A$4,000)
at Ferme de Jalogny, north of Lyon.

Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (Gr 1, 6.5f ) winner
Bobby’s Kitten shuttled to Twin Hill Stud

Shalaa - Arrowfield Stud’s shuttler Shalaa
(Invincible Spirit) scored a further three
winners this week, taking his total to nine
individual winners from his first northern
hemisphere crop and four winners in the
last eight days. Samrah (2 f ex Badee Ah by
Motivator) is the latest of those after winning
a 1600-metre maiden at La Test de Buch on
Saturday, while Longlai (2 c ex Mojo Risin by
Lope de Vega) won at Salisbury over a mile on
Thursday to open his account. Last Tuesday
King Shalaa remained unbeaten at Lyon with a
second career victory over 1600 metres. Shalaa
stands at Arrowfield for a fee of $33,000 (inc.
GST) in 2020.
New Group 1 winnersCurlin - Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms’ leading light
Curlin (Smart Strike) brought up his 11th
individual Grade 1 winner on Saturday when
Global Campaign (4 c ex Globe Trot by A P Indy),
the half-brother to former Australian shuttle
stallion Bolt d’Oro (Medaglia d’Oro), broke
through at the highest level in the Woodward
Handicap (Gr 1, 10f) at Saratoga. Sent off as
the clear second favourite, the Stanley Hough-
prepared Global Campaign lived up to the
expectations his owners Sagamore Farm and
WinStar Farm had long held for him, scoring
by a length and three-quarters. Curlin stood for
US$175,000 (approx A$240,000) in 2020.
Daredevil - Former WinStar Farm
stallion Daredevil (More Than Ready) had
his biggest day as a stallion on Friday when
Shedaresthedevil (3 f ex Starship Warpspeed

in the Kentucky Oaks (Gr 1, 9f) at Churchill

postponed from its traditional spot in May,

Dream Ahead - Dream Of Dreams (6 g ex
Vasilia by Dansili) made a deserved Group 1
breakthrough when he quickened nicely late
on to land the Sprint Cup Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) at
Haydock on Saturday and in the process provide
his sire Dream Ahead (Diktat) with a fourth
individual elite level winner. The Sir Michael
Stoute-trained six-year-old was following up his
romp in Group 2 company over seven furlongs
last time out, while Dream Of Dreams has also
finished second in each of the last two runnings
of the Diamond Jubilee Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) at
Royal Ascot. He is the fifth foal out of the Dansili
(Danehill) mare Vasilia, who herself is a half-
sister to Group 1 winner Airwave (Air Express).
Dream Ahead stood at Haras de Grandcamp for
a fee of €12,000 (approx AUD$19,500) in 2020.
Majesticperfection - Former Airdrie Stud
stallion Majesticperfection (Harlan’s Holiday)
celebrated his second Grade 1 winner when Bell’s
The One (4 f ex Street Mate by Street Cry) took
out the Derby City Distaff (Gr 1, 7f) at Churchill
Downs on Saturday by the smallest of margins,
bringing up a first top-flight victory for trainer
Neil Pessin. Ridden by Corey Lanerie, Bell’s
The One came with a late flourish to deny last
year’s Kentucky Oaks (Gr 1, 9f) winner Serengeti
Empress (Alternation), who led at a hot speed
from the outset; the official margin was a nose.
Purchased for US$155,000 (approx A$213,000)
at the Fasig-Tipton July Sales, Bell’s The One has
now earned US$790,040 (approx A$1.09 million).
Majesticperfection stood at Airdrie Stud in
Kentucky for seven seasons before relocating to
Haras Rapetti in Uruguay in mid-2018.
Not This Time - North America’s leading
freshman sire Not This Time (Giant’s Causeway)
brought up his first individual stakes winner
in the best way possible, producing a Grade
1 winner straight out of the gates on Sunday.
Princess Noor (2 f ex Sheza Smoke Show by

winner when Testa (3 f ex Tecla by Whipper)
edged out Fonthill Abbey (Dubawi) in a thrilling
finish to Thursday’s Prix de la Cochere (Listed,
1600m) at Longchamp. Just a short head split
the pair as they crossed the line, while Alzire

Brody’s Cause - The Kentucky Derby
undercard rarely features a two-year-old stakes
race given its place early in the season, but the
2020 Kentucky Derby undercard also featured
the start of the Road to the 2021 Kentucky Derby
(Gr 1, 10f) as the Iroquois Stakes (Gr 3, 1m)
awarded the first points that are used to select
the field. Those 10 points went to Sittin On Go (2
c ex Set’n On Ready by More Than Ready), who
gave freshman stallion Brody’s Cause (Giant’s
Causeway) his first stakes winner. Sent out as
one of the longest shots on the board, the Dale
Romans-trained Sittin On Go never looked
in much doubt, racing clear for a two and a
half length success over Midnight Bourbon
(Tiznow) with Super Stock (Dialed In) a length
and three-quarters away in third. It was a fitting
win, given Romans and owners Albaugh Family
Stables also raced Brody’s Cause, a two-time
Grade 1 winner. Brody’s Cause stood for $7,500
at Spendthrift Farm in 2020.
Dandy Man - Happy Romance (2 f ex
Rugged Up by Marju) continued her upward
trajectory as one of this year’s leading juvenile
fillies after a third consecutive win and a first
at stakes level in winning the Dick Poole Stakes
(Gr 3, 6f) at Salisbury on Thursday. The Richard
Hannon-trained daughter of Dandy Man
(Mozart) ran on strongly to give her sire a 15th
individual stakes winner, defeating Alcohol
Free (No Nay Never) by three-quarters of a
length with a further two lengths back to Scarlet
Bear (Kodi Bear). Happy Romance, winner of
the valuable Goffs UK Premier Yearling Stakes
(6f) and Weatherbys Super Sprint Stakes (5f),
is a fourth winner from four to race for Rugged
Up (Marju), who is a half-sister to stakes
winners Meiner Eternal (Tamayuz) and Warsaw
(Danehill Dancer), while this is also the family
of Prix Morny (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Silca’s
Sister (Inchinor). Dandy Man, also the sire
of this year’s Royal Ascot-winning two-year-
old filly Dandalla, stood for €15,000 (approx
AUD$25,000) at Ballyhane Stud in 2020.
Dark Angel - The progressive Top Rank (4
c ex Countess Ferrama by Authorized) posted
win number five in just his sixth start when
showing good battling qualities to make a
winning debut in stakes company to take out
the Superior Mile Stakes (Gr 3, 1m) at rain
softened Haydock on Saturday. The James
Tate-trained four-year-old bounced back
from his surprise defeat at York last time as
he found plenty late on for rider PJ McDonald
to defeat My Oberon (Dubawi) by a length
and a half, with the heavily supported
favourite Khaloosy (Dubawi) the same
margin away in third. Top Rank’s victory
took his sire Dark Angel’s (Acclamation)
tally of individual stakes winners to 65, and
also put him in the reckoning for a tilt at next
month’s Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Gr 1, 1m)
at Ascot. The winner is the third foal out of
the Authorized (Montjeu) mare Countess
Ferrama, who herself is a half-sister to the
Irish 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) winner Indian
Haven (Indian Ridge). Dark Angel stood
at Yeomanstown Stud for a fee of €85,000
(approx AUD$138,000) in 2020.
Dutch Art - Cheveley Park Stud’s Dutch
Art (Medicean) sired his 39th individual
stakes winner when the lightly raced Starman
(3 c ex Northern Star by Montjeu) landed the
Garrowby Stakes (Listed, 6f) at York on Sunday.
Having just his third start, the Ed Walker-
trained three-year-old beat favourite Dakota
Gold (Equiano) by a length and three-quarters,
with Watan (Toronado) a further four and a
half lengths adrift in third. The second foal out
of the Montjeu (Sadler’s Wells) mare Northern
Star, Starman is a half-brother to the Group-
placed winner Sunday Star. Dutch Art stood for
a private fee in 2020.
Declaration Of War - Declaration Of War
(War Front) sired his 30th individual stakes
winner when Fire At Will (2 c ex Flirt by Kitten’s
Joy) broke his maiden tag with victory in
Wednesday’s With Anticipation Stakes (Gr 3,
7f) at Saratoga. Wet weather meant the race was
switched from the turf to the main track, but the
switch of surface was no issue to Michael Maker-
trained juvenile as he scored by half a length.
Former Coolmore shuttler Declaration Of War
now stands at JBBA Shizunai Stallion Station for
a fee of ¥2,300,000 (approx AUD$30,000).

Frankel - Juddmonte’s star Frankel (Galileo)
sired his 57th individual stakes winner when
Kalahara (2 f ex Desertiste by Green Desert)
made it two wins in four starts by bagging the
Prix d’Arenberg (Gr 3, 1000m) at Longchamp
on Thursday. The Christophe Ferland-trained
juvenile beat US raider Wink (Midshipman) by
a length, with Livachope (Goken) a further two
lengths away in third. Frankel stood for a fee of
£175,000 (approx AUD$320,000) at Banstead
Manor Stud in Newmarket in 2020.
Ghostzapper - Ever-reliable sire
Ghostzapper (Awesome Again) made it stakes
winner number 78 on Saturday when Mystic
Guide (3 c ex Music Note by A P Indy) took out
the Jim Dandy Stakes (Gr 2, 9f) at Saratoga.
Run on the same day as both the Kentucky
Derby and the Pat Day Mile in this strangest
of years, the Jim Dandy - usually a lead-up to
the Travers Stakes (Gr 1, 10f) - instead served
as a prep for the Preakness Stakes (Gr 1, 9f) in
Baltimore next month. Just six runners went
to post, with the Michael Stidham-trained
and Godolphin-owned Mystic Guide second
favourite behind Belmont Stakes (Gr 1, 9f)
runner-up Dr Post (Quality Road). However, it
was Mystic Guide who proved much the best,
defeating Liveyourbeastlife (Ghostzapper) by
three-quarters of a length in an exacta for the
sire with Jesus’ Team (Tapiture) a further three-
quarters of a length away in third. Ghostzapper
stood at Adena Springs Kentucky for US$85,000
(approx A$117,000) this year.
Goken - Haras de Colleville resident Goken
(Kendargent) sired his second individual stakes
winner when Go Athletico (2 g ex Byburg by
Sageburg) struck in the Prix La Rochette (Gr 3,
1400m) at Longchamp on Sunday. The Philippe
Decouz-trained two-year-old was winning for
the second time in four starts when beating
Sealiway (Galiway) by a length. Favourite Naval
Crown (Dubawi) was another neck away in
third. Goken stood for a fee of €3,000 (approx
AUD$4,900) in 2020 at Haras de Colleville in
France.
Include - Airdrie Stud veteran Include
(Broad Brush) brought up his 55th individual
stakes winner on Friday when Sconsin (3 f ex
Sconnie by Tiznow) comfortably took out the
Eight Belles Stakes (Gr 2, 7f) at Churchill Downs
on Friday. The Greg Foley-trained Sconsin, who
began her career at Ellis Park last year, had won
a Churchill Downs allowance in May and had
been in the placings at her last two runs in black
type races before taking out the Eight Belles on
Friday. Last of the five fillies in the early stages of
Friday’s contest, she pulled out four wide under
James Graham and bloused past her rivals,
defeating Four Graces (Majesticperfection) by
two and a quarter lengths with outsider Never
Forget (War Front) a length and three-quarters
away in third. Now a 23-year-old, Include
continues to produce stakes winners year after
year. He stood for US$7,500 (approx A$10,300)
in 2020.
Invincible Spirit - Invincible Spirit (Green
Desert) registered his 20th Group or Grade 1
winner on Saturday when Digital Age (4 c ex
Willow View by Lemon Drop Kid) took out the
Old Forester Bourbon Turf Classic (Gr 1, 9f) at
Churchill Downs. Digital Age led home a 1-3-
4 for top American turf trainer Chad Brown
and was the longest shot of his on the board,
too, being sent off at 8-1. Ridden quietly early
by Javier Castellano, Digital Age wore down
long-time leader Factor This (The Factor) to
win by three-quarters of a length with two and
a quarter lengths back to Rockemperor (Holy
Roman Emperor) in third, a head in front of
stablemate Sacred Life (Siyouni). It was Digital
Age’s second stakes win on the Kentucky
Derby undercard, having taken the American
Turf Stakes (Gr 2, 8.5f) last year. Purchased
for 325,000gns (approx A$622,850) at the 2017
Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, Digital Age
has now won US$1,234,660 (approx A$1.7
million). Invincible Spirit stood for €100,000
(approx A$162,500) at the Irish National Stud
this year.
Kendargent- Kendargent (Kendor)
celebrated his 32nd individual stakes winner
when Tokyo Gold (2 c ex Biancarosa by
Dalakhani) came out on top in a tight finish to
the Prix Haras de Bouquetot (Listed, 1600m)
at Craon on Saturday. The Satoshi Kobayashi-
trained juvenile beat favourite Ludo (Penny’s

sister to Japan Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) hero Cheval
Grand (Heart’s Cry). King Kamehameha died in
August last year at Shadai Stallion Station.
Kurofune - Pure white filly Sodashi (2 f ex
Buchiko by King Kamehameha) gave Kurofune
(French Deputy) his 35th stakes winner on
Saturday when she took out the Sapporo Nisai
Stakes (Gr 3, 1800m) at Sapporo. Sodashi is the
first foal out of Japanese cult heroine Buchiko
(King Kamehameha), who attracted attention
for her unusual colour throughout her racing
career - she was officially listed as white, but
was splashed with brown across her body,
while her mane was dark too. While Buchiko
flirted with stakes company on the track,
her first-born looks likely to develop a cult
following of her own, both for her colour and
her talent, especially after taking the Sapporo
Nisai - a race that has produced winners like
Jungle Pocket (Tony Bin), Admire Moon (End
Sweep) and Logi Universe (Neo Universe).
The Naosuke Sugai-trained Sodashi defeated
Uberleben (Gold Ship) by a neck with Bathrat
Leon (Kizuna) a length and three-quarters
away in third. Kurofune served his last book of
mares in 2018 at Shadai Stallion Station.
Le Havre - Le Havre (Noverre) sired his
39th individual stakes winner when Glycon (4
g ex Glorious Sight by Singspiel) came out on
top in a tight finish to the La Coupe de Maisons-
Laffitte (Gr 3, 2000m) at Longchamp on Sunday.
The Jean-Claude Rouget-trained four-year-old
was winning for the fourth time in five starts
when beating Villa Rosa (Doctor Dino) and Les
Vertus (Shakespearean) by a short neck and a
head. Le Havre stood at Montfort et Preaux for
a fee of €50,000 (approx AUD$81,300) in 2020.
Liam’s Map - Sophomore stallion Liam’s
Map (Unbridled’s Song) made it five individual
stakes winners on Saturday when Rushie (3 c ex
Conquest Angel by Colonel John), a one-time
Kentucky Derby (Gr 1, 10f) contender, instead
won the Pat Day Mile (Gr 2, 8f) on the undercard.
Michael McCarthy’s Rushie had finished third
in the belated Santa Anita Derby (Gr 1, 9f), a
race in which eventual Kentucky Derby winner
Authentic (Into Mischief) was second - both
finished behind Honor A.P. (Honor Code) -
while he also finished third in the Blue Grass
Stakes (Gr 2, 9f) at Keeneland at his most recent
start. Instead of stepping up in trip, McCarthy
decided to cut him back for the Pat Day Mile
and it paid dividends as he defeated Sonneman
(Curlin) by a length and three-quarters; Tap It
To Win (Tapit) was a further half-length away
in third. Rushie may now contest the Preakness
Stakes (Gr 1, 9.5f), which will feature a number
of Kentucky Derby runners. Liam’s Map stood
for US$35,000 (approx A$48,000) at Lane’s End
Farms in 2020.
Lope De Vega - Former shuttler Lope De
Vega (Shamardal) sired his 73rd individual
stakes winner when Angel Power (3 f ex Burning
Rules by Aussie Rules) made a successful cross
channel raid to take out the Prix de Lioncourt
(Listed, 2100m) at Longchamp on Thursday.
Trained in Newmarket by Roger Varian, the filly
notched her third win in six starts when she beat
Extreme Fast (Le Havre) by three-quarters of a
length. Chorba (Olympic Glory) was another
length and a quarter away in third. Angel
Power’s dam Burning Rules (Aussie Rules) is an
unraced half-sister to Blue De Vega (Lope De
Vega), winner of the Killavullan Stakes (Gr 3, 7f)
at two. Lope De Vega, who shuttled to Australia
between 2011 and 2014, stood at Ballylinch
Stud in Ireland for a fee of €100,000 (approx
AUD$162,500) in 2020.
Mastercraftsman - Former Windsor Park
shuttler Mastercraftsman (Danehill Dancer)
sired his 72nd individual stakes winner
when Paths Of Glory (6 g ex Pacific Rim by
Singspiel) made a winning return to action to
take out Friday’s Wyong Cup (Listed, 2100m).
The European import has now won six of his
13 starts, two of those victories coming in
Australia. A €60,000 purchase for the China
Horse Club at the Goffs Ireland Orby Sale

Lope De Vega BALLYLINCH STUD
in 2016, Paths Of Glory won four times for
Newmarket-based Hugo Palmer before heading
to the southern hemisphere. The son of Group 2
winner Pacific Rim (Singspiel) is a half-brother
to La Hara (Dansili), a dual winner in the US.
Mastercraftsman stood at Coolmore in Ireland
for a fee of €25,000 (approx AUD$40,750) in
2020.
Mikki Isle - Arrowfield Stud’s shuttle
stallion Mikki Isle (Deep Impact) registered his
first stakes winner on Sunday when Meikei Yell
(2 f ex Shiroinger by Harbinger) took out the
Kokura Nisai Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Kokura
in Japan. Sent out as second favourite on the
yielding track, the Hidenori Take-trained
Meikei Yell - ridden by the handler’s cousin
Yutaka Take after winning a newcomers race
at the course last month - proved too strong for
odds-on favourite Mondreise (Daiwa Major),
scoring by a length and a half with a further four
lengths to Fodla (Lord Kanaloa) in third. Meikei
Yell is likely to be aimed at the Hanshin Juvenile
Fillies Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) in December. It was
also a first stakes winner as a broodmare sire
for King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes
(Gr 1, 1m 4f) hero Harbinger (Dansili), who
continues to stand at Shadai Stallion Station
in Hokkaido. Mikki Isle, who did not return to
Arrowfield Stud this year due to Covid-19 flight
restrictions, will have his first Australian two-
year-olds this season.
New Approach - Former Darley shuttler
New Approach (Galileo) sired his 55th
individual stakes winner when the Godolphin-
raced Ziegfeld (3 c ex Maid To Dream by Oasis
Dream) took the step up in grade firmly in his
stride to take out the Prix Millkom (Listed,
1600m) at Le Teste de Buch on Saturday. The
Andre Fabre-trained three-year-old made
it three wins in four starts when beating
Charlesquint (Showcasing) by a length and a
half, with Rodaballo (Lope De Vega) another
half a length away in third. New Approach stood
at Dalham Hall Stud in Newmarket for a fee of
£30,000 (approx AUD$54,500) in 2020.
Pride Of Dubai - Another of Coolmore’s
young sires enjoyed a successful week as Pride
Of Dubai (Street Cry) sired his fourth individual
stakes winner and second in Europe when Fancy
Man (2 c ex Fancy by Galileo) posted a comfortable
victory in Saturday’s Ascendant Stakes (Listed,
1m) at Haydock. The Richard Hannon-trained
juvenile, who was winning for the second time
in three starts, had little difficulty, winning by
three and a quarter lengths. Pride Of Dubai, who
is represented in Australia with Group 3 winner
Bella Nipotina, stands at Coolmore for a fee of
$38,500 (inc GST) in 2020.
Sepoy - Darley’s Sepoy (Elusive Quality) sired
his 18th individual stakes winner and his fifth in
Britain when Mighty Gurkha (2 c ex Royal Debt by
Royal Applause) bagged the Sirenia Stakes (Gr 3,
6f) at Kempton on Saturday. The Archie Watson-
trained juvenile was soon sent into the lead by
Adam McNamara and the duo just did enough to
cling on from Cloudbridge (Hard Spun) for a nose
win. Favourite Mystery Smiles (Mehmas) was a
length away in third. Now the winner of two of
his five starts, Mighty Gurkha made amends for a
disappointing effort when well beaten as a short-
priced favourite in a Group 3 contest in France on
his most recent outing. The winner is the first foal
out of the unraced Royal Debt (Royal Applause)
who is a sister to the Group-placed winner Dance
And Dance, and also a half-sister to Hong Kong
Listed winner Rewarding Hero (Exceed And
Excel). Sepoy stands at Northwood Park for a fee
of $7,700 in 2020.
Showcasing - Former Haunui Farm shuttler
Showcasing brought up stakes winner number
43 on Saturday when Perth horse Showmanship
(5 g ex Khales by Don Eduardo) scored his
first stakes victory in the Bendigo Bank Stakes
(Listed, 1200m) at Moonee Valley. The Grant
and Alana Williams-trained, Bob Peters-owned
Showmanship was having his second start in
Melbourne having won at Caulfield first-up and
took his record to seven wins from eight starts
overall. Showcasing last shuttled to Haunui Farm
in 2017; he stood at Whitsbury Manor Stud in the
UK for £55,000 (approx A$100,000) this season.
Soldier Hollow - Soldier Hollow (In The
Wings) sired his 45th individual stakes winner
when Sommelier (4 c ex Simply Red by Dashing
Blade) came out on top in Saturday’s Steher
Cup (Listed, 2800m) at Baden-Baden. The
Markus Klug-trained four-year-old scored
from All For Rome (Holy Roman Emperor)
and Calico (Soldier Hollow). Soldier Hollow
stood at Gestut Auenquelle for a fee of €30,000
(approx AUD$48,800) in 2020.

Sweynesse - Novara Park Stud’s Sweynesse
(Lonhro), last season’s champion first season
sire in New Zealand, registered his second
stakes winner on Saturday when Only Words
(3 f ex Jungle Pago by Darci Brahma) took out
the Wanganui Guineas (Listed, 1200m). The
Clinton Isdale-trained Only Words settled
midfield in a four-deep line on the heavy track
and was one of the first to come under pressure,
sent very wide on the course. However, she
stayed on strongly to win by a half-neck.
Sweynesse is standing at Novara Park Stud for
NZ$6,000 this season.
Treasure Beach - Florida-based stallion
Treasure Beach (Galileo) brought up his eighth
individual stakes winner on Saturday when
Raymundos Secret (4 f ex Paulette Caveat by
Greatness) took out the John C Mabee Stakes
(Gr 2, 9f) at Del Mar. The Phil d’Amato-trained
Raymundos Secret, who was sent off as favourite
in the eight-runner field, led at even splits under
Flavien Prat, kicking clear upon straightening.
Market rival Lady Prancealot (Sir Prancealot)
proved the main danger, charging home late,
but she failed to catch Raymundos Secret by
a neck; Catch The Eye (Quality Road) was a
length away in third. Treasure Beach stands
at Pleasant Acres Stallions near Ocala, with
the Irish Derby (Gr 1, 1m 4f) and Secretariat
Stakes (Gr 1, 10f) winner commanding a fee of
US$7,500 (approx A$10,300) in 2020.
Uncle Mo - Uncle Mo (Indian Charlie)
filly Girl Daddy provided her sire with his 65th
individual stakes winner and in the process
guaranteed herself a berth in the Breeders’
Cup Juvenile Fillies (Gr 1, 8.5f) with a victory in
the Pocahontas Stakes (Gr 3, 1m) at Churchill
Downs on Thursday. Trained by Dale Romans,
Girl Daddy was winning for the second time
in as many starts as she beat favourite Crazy
Beautiful (Liam’s Map) by two lengths, with a
gap of three and three-quarter lengths back
to the third-placed Alexandria (Constitution).
Bred in Kentucky by the China Horse Club, Girl
Daddy is out of the stakes-winning mare Cara
Marie (Unbridled's Song). She was a $500,000
purchase at the 2019 Keeneland September
Yearling Sale from the Bluewater Sales
consignment. Uncle Mo stood at Coolmore’s
Ashford Stud for a fee of US$125,000 (approx
AUD$171,500) in 2020.
Vancouver - Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1,
1200m) winner Vancouver (Medaglia d’Oro)
brought up his first Australian and US stakes
winners this last week, for his third stakes
winner overall. Night Raid (3 f ex Raid by Pins)
took out the Atlantic Jewel Stakes (Listed,
1200m) at Moonee Valley on Saturday, while
Madone (2 f ex Indian Love Call by Cherokee
Run) took out the Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf
(Listed, 1m) in America on Sunday. Night
Raid, a $160,000 purchase by Sheamus Mills
Bloodstock and Mick Price Racing at last
year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale,
entered Saturday’s contest off a seven-length
Tatura maiden win and was sent out as $3.50
favourite. Madone, who stumbled at the start
at Del Mar but was patiently ridden by Flavien
Prat, took victory by a half-length, remaining
unbeaten from two starts. Vancouver, whose
first stakes winner was South African Group 2
winner Mount Pleasant, is standing for $30,250
(inc GST) at Coolmore Australia this year.
