Contamination Control

Radiological Safety and ResponseRPT-243-PE-5

Radiation Protection Technology

Learning OutcomesUpon completion of this lesson, the student will be able to (cont’d):

• Demonstrate the ability to perform a radiological survey including:– Pre-survey preparations– Operational checks on survey instruments– General area radiation and contamination

surveys– Work area radiation and contamination surveys– Counting loose surface contamination surveys

using a GM frisking instrument converting cpm to dpm/100 cm2 and dpm/LAS

Radiation Protection Technology

Learning OutcomesUpon completion of this lesson, the student will be able to (cont’d):

• Demonstrate the ability to perform a radiological survey including:– Surveying items for contamination with a GM

frisking instrument– Documenting the results– Recommendations of posting adjustments based

on the results

Radiation Protection Technology

Learning OutcomesUpon completion of this lesson, the student will be able to (cont’d):

• Demonstrate acceptable behaviors when in and upon exiting a contamination area, including:– Proper wearing and removal of appropriate

contamination control clothing– Proper contamination control techniques that

minimize cross contamination– Proper use of the step-off pad for exiting and for

removal of material• Demonstrate the proper use of personnel dosimetry

Outline

• Explanation• Mini-Lecture Dress-Out and Bagging Techniques• Section 1 – Contaminated Area Entry and Survey• Section 2 – Investigation for Contamination Control

Problems

Radiation Protection Technology

Explanation

• The same team assignments made in PE-1 will continue into this PE.

• This PE has two sections. – The first section involves the teams entering a

contaminated area and performing a contamination survey.

– The second section involves the teams visually inspection an area to determine contamination control problems.

Radiation Protection Technology

Explanation

• The teams will be held accountable for the use of proper three-part communication and human performance tools during the PE.

• The exercise will start with a mini-lecture on proper PC use and bagging techniques for contamination control.

• A short briefing for the scenario.• At the conclusion of the practical portion, a team

debrief may be held if time permits.

PC Techniques

Radiation Protection Technology

In General…

• Each station issues procedures that describe the details of their personal protective clothing standards.

• Other techniques may be stipulated through training, department policy or “standing orders” such as: – When disposable PCs are required or – Alternate dressing and undressing techniques

developed locally– The use of tape vs. launderable items

Radiation Protection Technology

The ATC-RPT Standard

• For the purposes of our PEs, the PC standards that will be used are shown in the following pictures and as described here:– Unless specifically directed, joints are not taped– The wet paint technique is observed for SOP

barrier ropes and tape– All items leaving a posted contaminated area

must be surveyed clean or bagged – except an individual’s EAD.

– Cuff all bags for transferring at SOPs.

Radiation Protection Technology

The ATC-RPT Standard

• For the purposes of our PEs, the PC standards that will be used are shown in the following pictures and as described here:– The EAD is to be worn in a whirl pack in the chest

pocket of the PC coveralls– The TLD and security badge are worn under the

coveralls but within one hand’s breadth of the EAD.

Radiation Protection Technology

The ATC-RPT Standard

• For the purposes of our PEs, the PC standards that will be used are shown in the following pictures and as described here:– Upon exiting the Contaminated Area:

• Before removing the gloves, squeeze the EAD out of the whirl-pack onto the edge of the SOP

• Upon stepping on the SOP, place the EAD on the lanyard with the TLD

• Frisk the combo when a hand, foot, and face frisk is done

Radiation Protection Technology

The ATC-RPT Standard

• Portable instrumentation taken into posted Contaminated Areas shall be wrapped or bagged in clear plastic to prevent cross contamination.

• The Instrument wrapping may be wiped with a Maslin upon removal from the CA.
