CreatingYourFirstProgramInordertoenableautomaticwatering,youneedtosetupatleastoneprogram:1.FromtheRainMachineapp,gotoPrograms>AddNewProgram2.Labelyourprogramsuchas“RoseGarden”.3.SelectaFrequency:Determineshowoftentheprogramruns.4.SetStartTime.5.Chooseabasewateringdurationforeachzone(SuggestedorCustom).6.Save.Note:Suggesteddurationistheamountofwateringrequiredforeachzone,duringaregularsummerdaybasedonthezoneadvancedsettings.TheRainMachinewillconstantlyadjustthissuggesteddurationbasedonweatherandcelestialconditions(temperature,rain,humidity,wind,etc.andnumberofdaylighthours).Seenextpagefordetails.

Operations

SuggestedvsCustomDurationWateringdurationsforeachprogrammedzonecanbesetby:Suggestedduration(recommended):Pre-calculatedfromthepropertiesofyourzone(soiltype,planttype,sunexposureandlocation)foratypicalsummerday.IfWeather-Adaptiveoptionisenabled,thisdurationwillbeconstantlyadjustedbasedonweather.Customduration:Ifyoutransitionfromanoldcontroller,youmightfinditeasiertouseyourpreviousduration.IfWeather-Adaptiveoptionisenabledthisdurationwillbeconstantlyadjustedbasedonweather.TheRainMachineadjuststhesedurationsbasedonthreeweatherchoices:live,seasonalor“donotadjust”.Example:morewateringisrequiredonhotdays,thanoncooldays.Ifrainisforecast,wateringwillbereducedorcompletelysuspended,leadingtosubstantialwatersavings.

ProgramPropertiesWeather-AdaptiveWatering:Whenenabled,thebasewateringduration(SuggestedorCustom)willbeadjustedbasedonweather.RainRestriction:Donotwaterifrainexceedsacertainamount.Usethisfeatureifyouabsolutelydon’twantanywateringduringrainexceedingacertainsetamount.(e.g.ifrain>1/8inchthenstopwatering).RainRestrictionisabinarydecision(waterornotwater)andsometimesisrequiredbywatercompany/cityregulation.Whilewedonotagreewithusingrainrestriction,itmightberequiredbysomemunicipalities.KeepinmindthatWeather-AdaptiveWateringtakesrainintoaccountanyway,butincaseswhenlightrainispresent,thesystemstillmighttriggerashortwateringcycle.Iftherainamountislarge,theWeather-Adaptivefeaturewillpreventwateringforthatdayandpossiblyfewdaysafter.CycleandSoak:Splitsthebasewateringruntimeintomultiplecyclesseparatedbysoaktimes.Thisfeatureimproveswateringefficiencybyallowingtimeforthesoiltoabsorbwaterandthusavoidrunoff.Delaybetweenzones:Setstheamountoftimebetweentwoconsecutivezonesinaprogram,toaccommodatespecificirrigation

systems.(Example:extratimetofillupwatertanksortobuildupwaterpressure).Note:AdvancedProgramFeaturesareavailableviaRainMachinemobile/webapps.

WateringZonesManuallyFromtheRainMachineapp,gotooneofyourzones,tapontheplaybutton,andselectadesiredduration.TheUP/DOWN&WatercanbuttonscanbeusedtoachievethesamethingfromyourRainMachinedevice.ZoneProperties&MasterValveNote:IfyouhaveaMasterValveoraPump,youcanconnectitdirectlytotheMterminaloftheRainMachine.Eachtimeyoustartazone,theMasterValvewillalsobeactivated.LiveWeatherandSeasonalAdjustmentsSelectLiveWeatherorSeasonalAdjustmentsforyourzone.LiveWeather(default)takescurrentweatherintoconsideration,whileSeasonalAdjustisaseriesoffixedwateringdurations,representativefortheWinter/Spring/Summer/Autumnseasons.Thisisusefulforzones

thatarenotexposedtoallweatherelements(example:apatiowhereraindoesn’treach).NOTE:IfLiveWeatherdataistemporarilynotavailable,thesystemwillrolltoSeasonalAdjustments.SeasonalAdjustmentvaluesforyourlocationarestoredonyourRainMachine.SoilType,SlopeandExposureDifferentsoiltypeshavedifferentwaterretentionproperties;claysoilstendtoexperiencerunoff,whileloamysoilsmayholdwaterforalongertime.TheamountofwatercontentheldinthesoilisreferredtoasFieldCapacity.SunExposuredirectlyaffectstheevaporationrate(moresunrequiresmorewater).Slopeincreasesrunoff.VegetationTypeDifferentvegetationandplanttypesrequiredifferentamountsofwater.TheRainMachinealgorithmusesdifferentvariablesassociatedwitheachtypeofvegetationtomakeaccuratewaterconsumptioncalculations.SprinklerHeadTypeThesprinklerheadtypedeterminestheflowrateorhowmuchwaterasprinklercandelivertoyourplantsoveragivenduration.

Certainheadtypeshavehighflowrates,andcanirrigateyouryardquickly,whileothertypesareslower.RainMachinemobileappDashboardThedashboardscreenallowsyoutoviewpastandfutureweatherandwaterconsumptionstatistics.Taporswipeleft/rightoneachgraphtoviewdetailedinfo.WeatherChartshowsyouweatherstatuswithhighandlowtemperaturesandrainamountforeachday.ProgramsChartshowsthewateringoutputforthatrespectiveprogram.Eachprogramgraphshowsbothrecordedandforecastwateroutput.Week/Month/YeartabschangesthetimespanoftheDashboardgraphs.Settings>Dashboardallowsyoutotogglevariousgraphs.Note:Presstheupperright“Edit”buttontorearrangethegraphsorderorhidethemfromtheDashboard.

WeatherDataSettings>Weather:WeatherdataforyourlocationisfetchedseveraltimesperdayfromvariousweathersourcessuchasNOAA(US)orMET.NO(Global).DefaultisNOAAforUSandMET.NOonlyforEUandGlobal.Iftwoormoreweatherdatasourcesareusedatthesametime,theresultwillbeanaverageofthetwodatasets.Availableweathersourcesare:NOAA(default),METNO,TheWeatherChannel(WUndergroud),DarkSky(ForcecastIO),Netatmo,CIMIS(Californiaonly)andFAWN(Floridaonly),PersonalWeatherStations.Note:NOAAisdefault.Forultra-localweatheruselocalweathersensorssuchaspersonalweatherstationsfromWUndergroundnetwork,NetAtmo,DarkSkyorfutureRainMachinesensors.RestrictionsRestrictionsareasetofrulesfortherunningprograms.Example:Specifictimespans(Days,Months,Hours)wherenowateringtakesplace.SnoozeThisisatemporaryrestrictionthatskipsprogramsforasetnumberofdays,hoursorminutes.

FreezeProtectSetatemperaturethresholdbelowwhichwateringactivitywillbestopped.Thisisbasedonthelowestforecasttemperaturefortheday,whichusuallyoccursduringthenight.HotDaysDuringhotdaysincreasedwateringmightberequired.Cappingat100%isdefaultandallowsyoutosavewater.RainandFlowSensorsArainorflowsensorcanbewireddirectlytotheRainMachine(seewiringdiagramonpage5).Ifrainisdetectedduringascheduledprogram,theprogramwillnotstartatall.Thisfeaturebypassesforecastedweatherdata.SensitivitySensitivitysettingsadjusttheresponsivenesstoforecastamountsofrainorwind.Forexample,buildingscanprovideblockagefromwind,andasaresult,windhaslessimpactonevaporation.Settingwindorrainsensitivitytozeroeliminatestheirimpact.Onlychangethedefaultvaluesifyouhaveagoodreasontodoso.Theseareglobalsettingsandapplytoallzones.
