WIC is the Federal Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children.

About WIC

• WIC is for pregnant women, new and breastfeeding moms, and children under 5

• WIC is a place where families get monthly checks for healthy foods, other resources and services

• WIC made a difference for over 275,000 women, infants and children in Washington in 2016

• About 1/2 of all infants born in WA are on WIC

• 67% of WIC participants are in working families

• Around 11,000 clients are in the military or in military families

• About 60 local health agencies serve families at over 200 sites

• WIC is offered in more than 700 retail stores.

Vendor Contract Requirements

• Purchase WIC infant formula from approvedsuppliers

• Purchase WIC approved foods directly from a wholesale supplier

• Be authorized for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)

Vendor Contract Requirements

• Maintain business integrity

• Keep accurate records including dated sales receipts, invoices, and tax reporting that is organized and readable

• Offer competitive prices

Vendor Contract Requirements

• Maintain active email

• Notify WIC if contact information changes

• Give advance notice of the sale or purchase of a store

• Meet full line grocery definition

• Meet WIC minimum inventory requirements (MIR)

Vendor Contract Requirements

• Follow check handling procedures

• Sell only the specific WIC approved foods printed on each WIC check

• Don’t offer incentives exclusively to WIC customers

Vendor Training Requirements

• Participate in interactive (classroom) training at least once every 3 year contract period

• Train all employees involved with WIC, including managers

• Document all employee WIC training (“read & sign”)

Unscheduled visits to verify:• Inventory meets MIR; no outdated foods

• Prices clearly marked; shelf tags posted

• WIC transactions handled correctly

• Employee WIC training records

• Store clean and accessible

• Vendor Contract shows the sanction table

• Most violations result in a Notice of Violation letter and require corrective action within 30 days

• Pattern of serious infractions will lead to termination and/or fines

• Always read the check carefully• Sell only the food printed on the check• If it’s not printed on the check, don’t sell it• Know approved foods• Rely on WIC Shopping Guide,

not your Point of Sale system

• Ask you to order WIC approved foods and formula you normally don’t carry

• Re-sign the WIC check if they sign it before the purchase price is entered

• Exchange outdated, spoiled, damaged, or defective item for the same product only

• Use manufacturer and store coupons and loyalty cards

• Substitute for an item on the check

• Receive cash, coupons, tokens, or any item with a dollar value for returned foods
