German states

Prussia was building stronger links with the

other German states due to economic success and

the Zollverein.

Prussia had also shown in the Danish War that it was

a military protector.

German states

After the Austro-Prussian War, closer links had been achieved between all states.

The North German Confederation was

formed, and southern states entered military alliances

with Prussia.

Other countries/states

Other European countries had fears about a

dominant and united Germany.

However Bismarck was able to win support

(including from France and Italy) by offering

them deals such as land.

Arguments for influence

There remained concern from smaller German states about Prussian

domination of a united Germany.

However the economic and military links they had made it difficult to

oppose unity.

Bismarck’s role

Closer economic links were achieved before

Bismarck.

However the military links were brought about by

Bismarck building a bigger army and

provoking wars. All states joined together to fight the Franco-Prussian

War.

Bismarck’s role

Bismarck also helped prevent other European countries from starting wars with Prussia, or

supporting its enemies.

Bismarck was able to wait until he wished to fight, as

with France.
