In Harriet’s Words
“I was born a slave; but I never knew it till six years of happy childhood had passed away.” (Incidents In the Life of a Slave Girl, p. 1)
What Did I Learn?
I learned that things are not always what they seem. Just like Harriet Jacobs, I had to be more observant of the things around me and not take life for granted. Just like she did, I had to find my place in the world and take charge of my own life. She was a natural born leader and I aspire to be one as well.
What Will I Take With Me?
I know that when I leave this school, I am all that I have. I will take with me my ability to think for myself and take responsibility for my actions. My friends do not make me who I am. Due to my self-confidence, I do not need verification from anybody else.
I AmI am confident and determinedI wonder what the future holdsI hear my grandmother telling me, “Good job!”I see the broken hearts of my forefathersI want to make my ancestors proudI am confident and determined
I pretend that racism doesn’t existI feel the hands of the angels on my backI touch the moon and the starsI worry about the future of my studentsI cry the tears of those that came before meI am confident and determined
I understand that there will always be people to bring me downI say follow your heartI dream the impossibleI try my best no matter whatI am confident and determined
