The Department of Chemistry, HNB Garhwal University, Srinagar Garhwal is pleased to
invite sciensts, chemistry educators, chemists from industries to have deliberaon on
the themes of the conference focusing on the recent advancements in natural products
chemistry and nanotechnology. This conference also aims to discuss the measures to
increase the interest of students in chemistry. Invited lectures will be held by eminent
sciensts and the young researchers/teachers will get an opportunity to contribute in
the conference through oral/poster presentaon highlighng the usefulness and
wonders of chemistry.
This University was established in 1973 and later on renamed H. N. B. Garhwal
University in the memory of late Shri H. N. Bahuguna. It was upgraded to the central
university under the Central University Act in January 2009. Today, it is among the ten
largest universies of the country having three campuses at Srinagar, BGR Campus Pauri
(32 km from Srinagar) and SRT campus Badshahithaul, Tehri (85 km from Srinagar) and
affiliated colleges and instuons. Situated in beauful surroundings of holy
Alaknanda, the University at Srinagar is bisected by the river into two campuses,
Srinagar and Chauras. The University consists of 12 Schools and 43 departments with
the strength of 9,000 students.
Several departments in the university, namely Zoology and Biotechnology, History and
Archaeology, Polical Science, Tourism and Chemistry have been recognized under the
SAP program of the UGC. Some departments have also received grants for further
developments from DST FIST program, DBT, UGC and other funding agencies. The
university is commied to achieve excellence in teaching, research and learning with an
aim of achieving high standard in educaon.
The Department of Chemistry offers under-graduate and post graduate courses at
Srinagar campus since the incepon of the University in 1973. The post graduate course
was introduced at Tehri and Pauri campuses in 1996. The Department has a faculty of
four professors, and five assistant professors besides eight guest teachers to support
the teaching. Presently department was benefited by the UGC (DRS II) facilies.
The Department of Chemistry has four main establishments housing its teaching
facilies-lecture theatres, under-graduate and post graduate laboratories and
instrumentaon room. The Department is also maintaining a library for the post-
graduate courses and research. One of the major areas of research is natural products
chemistry, especially focusing on the isolaon and characterizaon of bioacve
compounds and their medicinal applicaons. Other research areas of interest are
synthec organic chemistry, material chemistry, Nano technology, natural dyes and
green chemistry.
The Department has established collaboraons with premier instutes and Universies
at Naonal and Internaonal level. The facules in the Department have also visited
abroad for joint collaborave research work and received many naonal and
internaonal fellowships.
