Religious Commitment IntheNationalStudyofYouthandReligionChristianSmithandhiscolleaguesfoundthatyoungpeoplecommittingtolivetheirlivesforGodisonereligiousexperiencethatisamongthemostimportantfactorsinleadingteenagersintothehighestlevelsofemergingadultreligion.•  Almost60percent(58.8%)madetheirfirstcommitmenttolivetheirlivesforGodbeforetheageof14.MostoftheseprobablycommittedtoGodduringthechildhoodyears.•  Approximately6%makeafirstcommitmentbetween14-17,andanother5%between81-23.•  Thirty-onepercentofyoungadultsreportednevercommittingtoGodasateenageroremergingadult.Smithsaysthatonecanexpectthatfewofthemprobablyeverwill.•  85percentofyoungadultswhohavecommittedtheirlivestoGodappeartohavemadetheirfirstcommitmentbeforeage14.

Religious Commitment ....Thesefindingscomplementandreinforceoneofthelargerstoriesofthisresearch:thatthereligiouscommitmentsandorientationsofmostpeopleappeartobesetearlyinlifeandverylikelyfollowaconsistenttrajectoryfromtheearlyformationthroughtheadolescentandintotheemergingadultyears.WhenitcomestocommitmenttoGod,itisnotthatexperiencesandchangesduringtheteenageandemergingadultyearsdonotmatterreligiouslyforpeople—theydo,especiallyforsome.Itisinsteadsimplythatwhatmattersformostevenmoreiswhathappensreligiouslybeforetheteenageyears,whichpowerfullyconditionsmostofeverythingthathappensthereafter.
