HOW TO PLAY

• Players should sit in a circle with the cards in the centre. If you have more than 3 players you will need multiple sets of the cards to provide enough options.• Each player should create a rhythm of a certain length (1-3 bars/meas-ures will work best).• Players then rotate and sit in front of the rhythm that the player to their left created. • Each player must then recreate the other player’s rhythm in a different time signature, e.g. changing a rhythm into • The winner is the first to correctly recreate the rhythm in the new time signature.

OTHER WAYS TO USEThere are many other ways to use the Related Rhythm cards, here are a few ideas to get you started:

• Lay out a series of cards in a row and ask your student to clap, tap, say or play them on a rhythm instrument.• Ask your student to compose a four bar rhythm and then use this to im-provise.• Create a pattern for clapping and turn over one card at a time until the student is clapping/vocalising the complete pattern from memory.• Play a pattern and ask your student to create the rhythm with the cards.• Use a random selection cards as a starting point for an improvisation or composition.

ASSEMBLYTo assemble:

• Print out the cards (pages 4-11) double-sided.• Cut apart the cards along the dotted lines.• Laminate if desired.• You might also like to gather some popsicle sticks or match sticks to use as barlines.

LEARNING OBJECTIVESThe main purpose of these cards is to allow students to interract with and un-derstand time signatures and how note values function in each time signature, including simple and compound time.
