The Jewish Festival of

PESACH

Pesach is one of the most important Jewish festivals and takes place in the spring.

Pesach is also sometimes known as “Passover”

The festival lasts for eight days

The exact date of the festival changes each year according to the moon.

Pesach remembers the story of the Exodus – the time when the Israelites were slaves in Egypt…

…and God sent 10 plagues on the Egyptians

The last plague was the death of the first born son of each Egyptian family

To protect themselves from this plague, the Israelites had to kill a lamb…

…and paint its blood above the doorways of their houses.

Then the Angel of Death would know to ‘pass over’ their house

Moses parted the Red Sea...

…and led the Israelites out of Egypt and into the wilderness.

These events are remembered during Pesach and read from the Hagadah book during the first meal of Pesach.

This meal is called the Seder meal, and each item of food on the Seder plate has an important meaning.

For example, bread without yeast is eaten to remind Jews that the Israelites left Egypt in a hurry…

…and had no time to take yeast with them for their cooking.

The youngest member of the family will ask why they are eating these items and the oldest member will explain the reason.

Before the festival begins, families will spring clean their houses…

…all leaven (yeast) is removed from the house and it is not used in any cooking during the festival…

…and on the first and last day of Pesach no work is permitted.

Pesach is a time to thank God for using his power to save the Israelites.

The Seder Meal

Jews see this event of being rescued from slavery in Egypt as important to remember because it shows God keeping his promise made in the covenant with Abraham - that God would guide and protect them.
