Introduction

India has abundant,untapped renewable energy resources including a large land mass that recives the higest solar irradiance of 5 trillion kwh/year ,a large costaline of 7500 kms realising on-shore& offshore wind potential and significant production of bio mass.

The renewable sources is cheap,safe and clean energy. So governmentof India is taking initiative for developing the renewable energy as the same time creating the awereness about the renewable sources in india through different programes ,scheme and project.

MNRE (Ministry of New Renewable Energy )

It is the nodal Ministry of the Government of India for all matters relating to new

and renewable energy.

IREDA(Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency)It is a Public Limited Government Company under the administrative control of Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) to promote, develop and extend financial assistance for renewable energy and energy efficiency/conservation projects.

SEC ( The Solar Energy Centre)

Itis a dedicated unit of the Ministry of New and Renewable

Energy, Government of India for development of Solar energy technologies and to promote its applications through product development

SOLAR ENERGY

Solar profile in India

Fortunately, India lies in sunny regions of the world.

Most parts of India receive 4-7 kWh of Solar radiation per square metre per day with 250-300 sunny days in a year

India has abundant Solar resources, as it receives about 3000 hours of sunshine every year, equivalent to over 5,000 trillion kWh.

Government support

In the latest budget for 2010/11, the government has announced an allocation of 10 billion towards the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission and the establishment of a clean energy fund.

This new budget has also encouraged private solar companies by reducing customs duty on solar panels by 5% and exempting excise duty on solar photovoltaic panels by reclassifying them as renewable energy items, rather than electrical items.

This is expected to reduce the cost of a roof-top solar panel installation by 15–20%.

Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission

This Mission is a major initiative of the Government of India and State Governments to promote ecologically sustainable growth while addressing India’s energy security challenge.

It will also constitute a major contribution by India to the global effort to meet the challenges of climate change.

Goals The objective of the National Solar Mission is to establish India as a global leader

in solar energy, by creating the policy conditions for its diffusion across the country as quickly as possible.

The immediate aim of the Mission is to focus on setting up an enabling environment for solar technology penetration in the country both at a centralized and decentralized level

Under a joint R&D project of MNRE and Department of Science & Technology (DST), the Indian Association for Cultivation of Science (IACS), Kolkata continued to work on optimization of process for fabrication of large area double junction amorphous silicon modules.

Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore to develop efficient electronic system for connecting small PV systems to the grid.

Indian Institute of Technology Bombay to work on development and testing of low concentration PV systems.

Development of polycrystalline silicon thin film Solar cells and small area Solar cells concluded at the Indian Association for Cultivation of Science at Jadavpur University.

Solar subsidy provided by govt. of India

The Indian government has decided to offer 30% subsidy to all homeowners who opt to install solar panels on their rooftops.

WIND POWER

Wind energy profile in India

India has the fifth largest installed wind power capacity in the world

As of 31 Dec 2010 the installed capacity of wind power in India was 14000MW

The wind energy Mainly spread across Tamil Nadu , Maharashtra , Gujarat , Karnataka.

It is estimated that 6,000 MW of additional wind power capacity will be installed in India by 2012.

Wind power accounts for 6% of India's total installed power capacity, and it generates 1.6% of the country's power.

Incentives given by the government to Wind Energy Generation:

Accelerated Depreciation: This facility is related to the depreciation of the assets. Under it, 80% depreciation is allowed in first year and rest 10 % throughout the life.10% is assumed to be the scrap value.

Research & Development in wind power

Indian Wind Energy Association(INWEA)

It is Working for development of wind power in india and involving with many programs related to wind energy.

The Wind Resources Assessment Programme is being implemented through the State Nodal Agencies, Field Research Unit of Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM-FRU) and Center for Wind Energy Technology (C-WET).

BIOMASS ENERGY

Biomass profile in India

The total technical biomass potential from residues and energy crops in India is estimated to be around 66,880MW .

Under its 11th Plan period (2007-2012), the government of India aims to add 1,700 MW capacity through biomass and bagasse cogeneration in various states, including Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

The target consists of 500 MW from biomass projects and 1,200 MW from projects based on utilizing bagasse (the fibrous pulp byproduct of sugarcane processing) as a source of bioenergy,

Incentives given by the government

• Capital subsidy: 15Lac/100KW

• Interest Subsidy: 2% by IRDEA

• Income Tax Holiday:10Years

• Depreciation: 80 % depreciation in the first year

• Rural electrification subsidy : 50 to 100%

• Customs Duty: low rate

• Incentives for preparation of Detailed Project Reports (DPR) and feasibility reports

Research & Development in Bio mass

Centre for Sustainable Technologies (CST)

• CST has a large number of innovations in the fields of wood burning devices (cook stoves and agro-products driers) ,biomass gasifiers of different capacities (for electrical and thermal applications).

Sardar Patel Renewable Energy Research Institute (SPRERI)

• SPRERI, has achieved mastery in the biomass gasification and using the gasification technology they have been developed biomass based improved cook stove.

IIT Delhi

• IITD itself is doing lot of R&D work in this segment and has recently come up with a novel hybrid solar biomass cook stove

Conclusion

The Govt. should have a vision to make an integrated approach for development of clean,green,safe and convenient forms of energy at least cost in a technically efficient, economically viable and environmentally sustainable manner. Unless we create awareness among crores of school children ,general public and Govt. & non-Govt. officials on the renewable energy system & device. It will take years together to extend the renewable energy benefit to each corner of our country.
