ACTIVITIES
. During sessions facilitators divided pupils according to their respective classes at Good hope
academy and Mwiki primary school. Each class had two facilitators and a teacher during
sessions. At Kenyatta university and Kasarani primary school the facilitators did a group
discussion in an outdoor setting and lectures in classes during some sessions. Questioners and
interviews were done before and after five sessions or topics handled in all schools. A random
sample of 20 pupils were selected in all three schools. This was to help in monitoring and
evaluating impact of the life skills program before and after life skills program. At some point
the facilitators divided the pupils in their gender so that Female facilitators could have one on
one talk with the girls as they gave out the sanitary pads.
Life skill session were very interactive since facilitators engaged pupils participation in Groups
works, discussions, brain storming and answered any question that was raised by the pupils.
There was also time set for pupils to play with drug abuse luddo game as a way to recap and
recap on the topics taught during life skills sessions.
IMPACT
Total of 841 pupils were reached through this program and the drug abuse luddo game used
during the life skill sessions. The life skills session were a success since pupils made a deliberate
decision to avoid drug abuse, speak to their peers on dangers of drug abuse. The pupils had a
chance to clarify some myths and misconceptions they had by asking questions. It was after the
life skill session that pupils learnt what affects their self esteem and what things they need to
do to build their self esteem, assertiveness and decisions making capacity and how to control
their emotions. The pupils also had a chance to share information and do recaps while playing
with the drug abuse board games after each lesson. They really enjoyed the game and
requested the facilitators to come back again to teach on more lessons in the school. The
school administration admitted there was a change in the behavior and attitude in pupils after
the five session were done since some pupils were more confident in class, reduction in cases
3
of drug related cases as well as pupils sharing information with peers as the played the luddo
game during break time or free lesson.
The teacher were very glad to have the university student speak to their pupils since they
opened up more to them. This help the school administration not gather more information on
some of the challenges facing their pupils thus plan on strategies to help their pupils on this
upcoming issues or problems.
RECOMMENDATIONS
The program on life skills is very important and there is need to reach out to more public
schools. The teachers remarked that sometimes may not do effective life skills sessions due to
heavy work load and limited time in school. They therefore recommended that trained
facilitators were welcome to speak to their pupils since pupils were more at ease interacting
with the university pupils during the sessions. Due cost and magnitude of schools requesting
for their program there rose a need for the MASH Foundation trust and pro motivators to seek
to support in kind or financial from other partners to meet logistics for the facilitators going
out to the schools and printing of drug abuse luddo games. There is also a need to train more
teachers on how to start health clubs in schools that will run campaign against drug abuse and
enhance peer to peer sharing on life skills and important information.
