Rev. J. Astor Buchanan

After preaching his last sermon at
Pine Branch Baptist Church on
December 29, 1996, Rev. J. Astor
Buchanan went home to be with his
Lord. Rev. Buchanan touched the
lives of many people in Mitchell
County and surrounding areas.
Rev. Buchanan was ordained into
the ministry on September 6, 1941.
He was married to Pauline Ballew
on September 18, 1942. They had
six children; 5 boys and 1 girl. After
the death of his ",ife, Rev.
Buchanan later married Kathleen on
January 1, 1983.
Rev. Buchanan pastored twenty-\
one churches in Eastern Tennessee
and Western North Carolina. Those
in Mitchell County included,
Calv!yy, Red Hill, Cub Creek, Windom, ~ Mine Creek, and Cane
~reek. He pastored some of these more than once. He also held hundreds of
revivals in his fifty-five years as a minister.
Rev. Buchanan preached the Annual Sermon to the Mitchell Association in
1959, in 1960, in 1981, and again in 1991. He served on various committees for
the association and was serving on the Resolutions Committee at the time of his
death.
Rev. Buchanan was a member of Pine Branch Baptist Church where many of
his family members still attend.
Matthew 25:21 says, "Well done, thou good and failhful servant ..... Rev. J. Astor
Buchanan will be remembered in this way.
