After the guns of World War I fell silent -- from the town of Verdun, where one of the war's costliest battles took place.

The following unpublished photos were taken by LIFE magazine in 1964.

Verdun, France.... 1964

"The sullen turrets of Verdun's forts still guard the world's most deadly battlefields, relics of the war that left unhealed scars on history."

In an ossuary near Douaumont, even now smelling of death, rest the bones of 130,000 unidentified casualties from both sides.

"14,000 marble crosses honor Americans" at Verdun.

"At Vaux rests a plaque to one soldier."

"One monument remembers refugees."

"At Douaumont a statue of a French soldier lies with 15,000 actual dead."
