Grade 4

STANDARD 4-3: THE STUDENT WILL

DEMONSTRATE AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE

CONFLICT BETWEEN THE AMERICAN COLONIES

AND ENGLAND.

4-3.4 Summarize the events and key

battles of the Revolutionary War, including

Lexington and Concord, Bunker (Breed’s)

Hill, Charleston, Saratoga, Cowpens, and

Yorktown.

The students will be able to explain the events and key

battles of the Revolutionary War by creating a poster

in small groups and presenting it to the class.

LEXINGTON AND CONCORD

Paul Revere rode through and warned everyone…

“The British are coming, the British are coming!”

“The shot heard ‘round the world” began the

Revolutionary War.

The two battles began on April 18th, 1775.

The British lost 275 soldiers and the Colonists lost

94, 18 KIA (killed in action).

BUNKER (BREED’S) HILL

The battle began on June 17th, 1775.

Fought on Breeds Hill in Charlestown to protect a

shipyard.

A leader of the Colonists gave the order “Don't

fire until you see the whites of their eyes” to

preserve ammo

British lost 1,054 men, mostly wounded.

SARATOGA There were two battles at Saratoga one September 19th and the other October 7th

of 1777.

The Colonists only lost 90 men and 240 wounded

THIS WAS THE TURNING POINT IN THE WAR!!

The British lost 440 soldiers, and 695 wounded

CHARLESTON

Colonists lost 98 men and 148 KIA

This was a victory for the British which allowed

them to take control of the South.

The battle was on March 29th, 1780

COWPENS

This battle happened on January 17th, 1781

This battle lasted less than an hour

A much needed victory for the colonists!!

YORKTOWN

The battle of Yorktown began on September 26th,

1781

After 21 days of battle British commander Lord

Charles Cornwallis sent out an officer to

surrender, by waving a white handkerchief.

The Colonists and the French moved in on British

troops.

We had won the American Revolution!!
