Riyadh Metro • Riyadh is one of the world’s fasting growing metropolitan areas –

it has more than doubled in size since 1990.

• The population of the city was over 5.7 million in 2012 and is expected to grow to 8.3 million by 2030.

• Riyadh is heavily car-dependent and faces costly and frustrating road traffic congestion that will only get worse in the future without a major public transport initiative.

• In 2002 the Arriyadh Development Authority completed its Metropolitan Development Strategy which included the provision of a public transport system.

Riyadh Metro

• The Council of Ministers approved the Riyadh Public Transport Program on 23 April, 2012.

• The approval required that all phases of the Program be completed during 4 years of construction.

• Arriyadh Development Authority began the planning and conceptual design of the Riyadh Public Transport system.

Riyadh Metro - Challenges The delivery of the public transport program presents some

unique challenges due to its extent, scope and

implementation strategy.

Delivering a complete public transport system across a large

part of the city within 5 years.

Minimizing disruption to the city.

Gaining the support of the people of Riyadh during
