Hi everyone,
Not quite sure what‟s been hap-
pening to the weather during the
months of April & May. Been trying
to dodge the heavy showers when
on the bike, but usually got caught up in them...Hey
ho!
Well, the long-awaited Cider rally has come and
gone and was well worth the wait. It was great to
see so many GWC members make the effort and
dress up as Disney characters on the Saturday night
and even better to see the ladies in their Basques
for Sundays burlesque evening ..... Nice! The band,
Devious were superb & certainly made a good
impression. On the chapter challenge we didn‟t
match our first place of last year; this year‟s honours
went to the Lakeside chapter...congratulations to
them! Oh yeah, got caught in the rain on the
Monday morning ride home too! The next rally is the
Brum Bash, on the last weekend in May - always a
good rally, I think we‟re going up en masse, Devious
are booked in there too.
June brings us the European Rally held at Cascais,
Portugal 14th- 17th with GWC members departing
from the 8th onwards and returning around the 20th.
I think the majority are staying at the same Hotel
along with Bridgwater Chapter, so there should be
some fun & games. I‟ve got the honour of carrying
the Chapter flag in the parade - should be
interesting! So, to all those making the trip I‟d just
like to wish you all a safe journey there and back ...
see you at the bar for a beer!
H.O.G® Chapter challenge mileage forms are at
Riders, get them stamped and hand over to Chris
Harding, it‟s not too late.
At the Cross Hands club night Bazz presented ten
proposed events for our 10th anniversary, to be held
throughout 2013. Yvonne presented the proposals
at the Cangen club night the following evening. Most
of the proposals were well received and some
modifications have been made. Hopefully there will
be something on the list that may be of interest to
yourselves. Who knows, you may be lucky enough
to do all ten. The Committee looked into holding a
rally for 2013 and decided against it - The reasons
being: the location is not ideal, the lack of alternative
accommodation, besides camping, decreasing
numbers in attendance and looking for a suitable
alternative is proving difficult. So hopefully, for 2014,
we can return revitalised with a new rally, venue and
possibly a date when we don‟t have to compete with
any other rallies. So let‟s make this year‟s rally an
extra special event and one to remember. Guess
what? We‟ve got Devious playing. I should know all
the lyrics by then. I almost forgot they‟re playing at
Bill & Sam‟s wedding the week after our rally too !
I heard Mark & Sean had 36 bikes out for May‟s
second Sunday ride-out, excellent stuff & great
weather too.
My bike has gone in to the paint shop for a bit of a
makeover...Red! Should be out in time for the Brum
Bash...fingers crossed!
That‟s all for now folks
Ride safe Andy
Rumblings from the Editor
Hello all,
I would like to start off this RoadHOG with a list of
thanks:
1. For the support and confidence of the Great
Western Committee for letting me loose on our
Mag.
2. To Beryl (Mrs F-K) for her patience, support
and especially her computer skills
3. To contributors to this, my first edition.
I have introduced a new feature to the Mag. entitled
„My HOG‟. Everyone has a special module of HD that
they really love or desire. This is your opportunity to
put together a photo article of that bike.
I have pushed the boat out with an article about my
1941 WLC. For next month, I will need photos and a
few words on Your Number ONE Toy.

Hi Everyone,
It‟s not long now to our own
“Hogs in the Hayfields”
Rally, have YOU got your
ticket? There‟s a lot going
on behind the scenes in
preparation for the big
event. We have a dedicated team led by Tony
James already volunteering for setting up and tak-
ing down the bunting, gazebos and other gear. We
also have Andy Ball, our Director, in charge of or-
ganising the gate rota, (his arm was twisted). Not
forgetting that Jane Scott is busily organising we
ladies for the Hospitality Tent rota, making cakes,
and arranging rehearsal times for the Gurzels. All
we need now is your support!
We had a good turnout for both of our Club nights in
May, despite a good few of you still feeling the after
effects of the Cider Rally!
Baz and I shared the presentation of the proposals
from the 10th Anniversary Planning Group, for cele-
brating the 10th Year of GWC in 2013, at both of our
Club nights. We outlined each of the 10 proposed
events and asked for feedback from members by a
show of hands or comments.
Martin James was presented with the voucher for
the free service, which was kindly donated by
Riders, for being the closest to guessing the com-
bined average time of all the runners from GWC
who took part in the Forest of Dean Half Marathon.
He took his bike into Riders on the following Satur-
day to use it!
Andy was pleased to announce that Ian Furey-King
is our new Editor, and presented him with his
officer‟s patch.
Tony James held a draw for the free Rally ticket,
and the lucky winner was AKK, aka Kenny Kendall,
who was pleasantly surprised!
Jenny and Bill organised our raffles, and as usual
you were very generous at both Club nights by
donating £95 at our Bristol meeting and £57 at our
Cangen meeting, making a total of £152 for the
Orchard Trust.
We are pleased to welcome 5 new members to our
Chapter:
David Thomas and Julia Emerson, and Kendall and
Sharon Britton, all from Port Talbot, and John
Bidwell from Bristol
Tony Yendle managed to snap some new members
at the “Cross Hands”,
Jim Plummer and Lyn Morgan
Mark Meader
I am always available at Club nights, and you can
also contact me by phone on: 01225 751017 or by

Secretary’s Round-up of May’s Committee Meeting
Page 4
Your Committee held its monthly meeting on May
12th.
Andy welcomed Ian Furey-King, our new Editor.
We agreed with the changes made to the proposals
for next year, made by the 10th Anniversary
Planning Group, for the programme of events in
2013, celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the
formation of our Chapter. Changes reflected the
views of chapter members, after receiving feedback
from the two recent meetings. This item took up
most of our meeting.
Other items that were discussed included:
Details from Martin of the open day at Riders on
Sunday May 20th to celebrate the 10
th Anniversary
of the opening of their shop.
Bill reported on the progress he is making in priori-
tising how the Chapter may best spend our Charity
funds. He is working from the wish list provided by
the Orchard Trust.
Also, how they plan to use the money collected in
memory of Pete Marlow. There are also plans to
arrange visits to the Orchard Trust, so GWC mem-
bers can see the impact our Chapter support is
making.
The date of our next meeting will be June 2nd at
11.00am at The Old Ferry Inn, Beachley.
A copy of the full minutes is available on request.

Hi All
I have two items for your information this month.
MAG Day of Action
Sunday 24th
June 2012
This is a copy of the email sent by the Motorcycle Action Group (MAG) to members. ( If you are not a member of MAG yet, then shame on you!!!! )
“If you are a Facebook user you may be delighted to know that the Facebook page for 24th June Demo is up and running. Please click the “like it” box
http://tinyurl.com/MAGEUHANDSOFFBIKINGFB
The Facebook page will contain loads of info about the day. As it continues to develop as a page it will tell you where start points are for your nearest demo and if smaller feeder runs are being organised, so that you can ride to the start point with others. If it's a good distance whether or not food and refreshments will be available. Whether the run nearest to you has a definite end point or riders
should just disperse etc.
Info sheets about what the day is for and how the demo fits in with other campaigning, suggested local press releases and other handy info will be added as the day approaches.
If you aren't a Face-booker, you can still view the start map on http://tinyurl.com/MAG24JUNE12
If you bookmark the map address, you'll be able to see the start and finish point details as everything is finalised.
Finally, click here https://www.facebook.com/pages/EU-Hands-Off-Biking-A-Motorcycle-Action-Group-Campaign/265550043541800?v=app_182667455607 if you want to view one of the info sheets as a non-Facebook user.

Motorcyclist „Crash Cards‟
Whilst at the Prescott Hill Climb ride Mike Sage obtained a leaflet and „Crash Card‟ from one of the road safety displays at the event. This scheme is supported by the Great Western Ambulance Service and the Road Safety unit at Gloucestershire County Council. This scheme is recognised
nationwide by paramedics and other emergency services.
The „Crash Card‟ is the size of a business card and is completed by a rider, or pillion, writing on your personal details, medical condi-tions and next of kin. This card is then kept behind the lining inside your crash helmet. On the leaflet is a small green circular sticker which you affix to the right hand side of your crash helmet. Should you be unfortunate to have an accident and paramedics attend, they will check your lid for a green sticker and then they know there will be a „crash card‟ within. Simple and effective. And its free!!
At present we are in the process of obtaining 200 of these „crash cards‟ hopefully for distribution at the two club nights in June.

Hi All
Welcome to June and already the year seems to be slipping by. The riding season is in full swing with lots of bike
related events going on all over the region. Already many miles have been clocked up on what is a full calendar.
Firstly this month I would like to wish Dale Jenkins all the best as he starts out on a new life changing adventure. He has moved to Boston, Massachusetts to pursue a fantastic work opportunity for his company. Dale has been an active Road Mar-shal in my team for the last 18 months and he will be missed. A fully committed guy with a great sense of humour. Best of luck mate and we all look forward to dropping by your new place for a visit. Well as one door shuts another one opens. Mike Sage has kindly offered to fill the void on my team and brings a wealth of experience with him. An advanced driver from a previous life, I‟m sure he will effortlessly slot into the team. Please join me in welcoming Mike as a new Road Marshal.
This month is also well packed with lots of riding. We have two great ride-outs planned for June. Both are heading in the direction of Mid Wales. Exceptional scenery is guaranteed. This should also give everyone a taster for one of the planned 2013 events currently being planned. Also this month sees many of the chapter‟s guys and gals at the 2012 European Rally in Portugal. I‟m sure, from what I have seen, some of the riding will be spectacular. I look forward to hearing the many tales upon their return.
If you are new to the Chapter, then please come along and join us on a ride. Be sure to make yourself known to any of the Road Captains or Marshals.
And so, on to the forthcoming rides:

Ladies of Harley By Jane Scott
Page 8
Hello Ladies,
Well at the time of writing this article I‟m sat enjoying a glass of wine in York, yes on a sort of holiday. Normally we go to France, but due to the weather we thought we would have a change. York ticked the boxes for somewhere we had not been
before, and I must say it‟s well worth a visit.
What‟s been happening since the last RoadHOG? Well of course we had the Cider Rally and every year we say we are going to take it “easy” on the Friday night, BUT like kids we forget all we planned to do and start drinking at about 12 noon and whoops, in bed by 10:30. Apart from that a good time was had by all. Five from Great Western went on the LOH ride-out, all dressed in our tutus and boas (Just the women, that didn‟t include you Bazzer) a grand sight to be seen as we rode to Brean Sands for a coffee and a chat with the Bridgwater gals. The Burlesque theme was carried on through to the evening and some of us gals added stockings to our tutus, I‟m sure all the men had a good time!
Onwards to what‟s happening in Great Western: if you came to the club night, you will know we are celebrat-ing our 10 years of being a chapter in 2013. If you have any ideas for a LOH weekend then let me know. We have to try and accommodate all. At club night we brought along our two Aussie friends who we met on a USA tour, having kept in contact with them since. Although they are not Harley riders they could not get over the friendship which was shown within the Chap-ter and that was really nice to hear. They even said they would give their BMW club another try!
We have had our 2nd rehearsal for the Gurzels per-formance and it‟s looking promising. With 2 more re-hearsals here in England and a few in Portugal, I think it will be as they say “alright on the night”.
If, like me, you are going to Portugal you will receive your June Mag. through the post, unless you live in Wales, as there is a club night. The July issue will be after our rally, so maybe we will catch up in Portugal or on our A Team ride-out to Rhayader on the 24th June, which is taking the long way round. Then, of course, it will be count down to our rally, I hope you have pur-chased your tickets
Last but not least we are having a pink theme in the Hospitality Tent. I‟m sure you will have a pink item to wear or a feather boa. Also if you are able to bake some cakes that would be great. If you need any more info my contact details are at the end
of my article:
That‟s all for now take care everyone.

Hi All,
The first rally of the season went off really well, the
Cider rally. I'm sure you‟ve all seen the pictures on
the website and elsewhere of the Great Western
crew dressed as Dalmatians, with a couple of
Cruella de Vil thrown in for good measure. I have to
take off my beanie hat to those few hardy souls that
camped over the weekend, talk about frosty nuts...
The chalets on the other hand were way too hot, we
had to open a window (rub it in). It took me a good
three days to get over the rally and get my voice
back, must have been to much singing and/or too
much Jack Daniels.
By the time you read this we will have been to the
Brum Bash, we are all camping. I hope it warms up
a bit or its going to take plenty of Jack Daniels to
keep me warm. It looks as though there is going to
be a mini invasion from the Great Western, so look
out Birmingham here we come.
The Portugal trip is getting ever closer, my „Glide is
off the road at present with an oil leek (Must be a
Welsh made bike...Ed.) ,but hopefully will be fixed in
time. Hog assist taken out, travel insurance
arranged and I just need to get some Euros, that‟s if
it hasn‟t imploded in the mean time.
It‟s a bad time for bike problems this month. I made
it as far as Swansea yesterday, for Mark and Sean‟s
ride-out, stopped for a fag and a coffee around
8:00am, and the Springer wouldn't re-start. After
checking the fuses, battery etc I gave up and called
the breakdown service. When he arrived the driver
of the breakdown truck wanted to take a picture of
the bike , I said ok but not on the back of the truck.
Anyway I had a nice ride home at about 40mph all
the way in a cosy cab. Thankfully after some help
from Darren Sharpe, over the phone, I traced the
problem to a faulty ignition switch. She‟s up and
running like a good -un again. Harleys, you got to
love „em. By the way, the V-rod is still running.
Apparently the Welsh ride-out led by Mark, with Si
and Sean bringing up the rear, was well attended
with over thirty bikes in attendance. I have received
a few messages of thanks to the boys for the
enjoyable ride-out, which ended at the Cardiff Bike
Show, nice one lads, gutted I missed it.
Well that‟s all for this month, get those bikes out on
the road, Summer is here.
Lechyd Da
Graham.

Before 1939 the Canadian Army operated British bikes
such as Norton, BSA, Triumph and American Indian
motorcycles. From the outset of World WW 2 it was clear
to the Canadian Government that British sources were
unable to meet the demand and after placing an order for
640 Indian Scout models Indian couldn‟t meet the orders
for spares either.
The Canadian Government then placed orders with Harley
for their WL45 model and big twins, but to a Canadian
spec. This included such features as larger diameter
interchangeable wheels, a hand and foot clutch
combination, right-hand throttle (the standard WLA, the
US spec model, had a left hand throttle!), different lighting
and no machine gun mount on the front forks.
The British Military initially ordered two test bikes in 1941
and then placed larger orders from 1942 onwards.
My bike is one of the first two units ordered and was, by
pure chance, the one ridden and maintained in 1941 by
my Dad, now 93.

Here‟s a little teaser to kick off this
month‟s article. If you regularly check
out the GWC Blog, you will probably
know the answers.
What are these images and what do
they sig- nify?
a) An obe-
lisk in the
desert.
b) Fly-
ing Saucers and all that.
c) Small town on the “Turquoise Trail”.
Think chillis!
d) Some real mean-looking dudes
wearing stars.
A lot of members, particularly those
who have joined the Chapter recently,
have been asking us the questions –
„is there going to be another USA
trip?‟, „when is it‟ and „where are we
going?‟ With Yvonne and I taking a
year off in 2013, this has clearly thrown
a few people. Instead, there are lots of
great events, for you to spend your
money on, during our Chapter‟s 10th
year!
After much pondering (well not too
much), 2014 is provisionally a goer,
subject to Committee approval, of
course. So, coming back to the pic-
tures above, they epitomise part of a
Southern Arizona/New Mexico tour –
again, spectacularly scenic riding,
stopping by numerous iconic locations,
including (a) Trinity – ground zero for
the world‟s first atomic bomb, (b) Area
51, Roswell and aliens –
(c) This is Madrid and the location for
“Wild Hogs”, while (d) is, of course,
Tombstone. This wild-west town even
has a Harley-Davidson shop (not deal-
ership!). Other locations will include
Meteor Crater, The Painted Desert,
Canyon de Chelly, Los Alamos, Ban-
delier National Park, Rio Grande
Gorge, H-D Dealerships and much
more. Don‟t get carried away with your
enthusiasm just yet: the trip will not go
live before the end of this year.
More immediately, and it will be upon
us before you know it, it‟s our 5th HITH
rally (gee is it really 5 years since we
started – that‟s a worrying passage of
time!). Anyway, I just want to mention
that, on the Saturday, I will be manning
a “Bikers‟ Bits” table. The idea is that
this will be an opportunity to sell any-
thing, biker-related, that someone else
might be longing to have. It would also
help the Orchard Trust, as the deal will
be that 20% of the sales income goes
to the Trust; you keep the rest. If you
have something you would just like to
donate to be sold for charity – brilliant.
All you will need to do is hunt through
those bits languishing in your garage/
shed or wherever and e-mail me
(p.j.roberts@bris.ac.uk) with the de-
tails.
Bike Bits brings us to Tyres, and the
“Tip of the Month”:
It‟s that time of year when the holiday
plans are being made and those long
European roads are being mapped
out. .Once your route is set and you
know the miles you are going to do,
have a little think about those two
round rubbery things on your bike that
wear out with mileage -yes your tyres.
Before you go, here are some basic
checks to help avoid costly repair bills
or fines from the local authorities.
(1) Tyre pressures should be checked,
a day or two prior to leaving, making
sure you account for rider, pillion and
any luggage that you may be taking.
This will not only avoid any uneven
tyre wear but also increase fuel econ-
omy.
(2) If you have access to a bike lift,
check both tyres for any cuts or nails
that may cause the tyre to go down at
a later date. Nails do not always de-
flate a tyre straight away. If you don‟t
have a lift, walk the bike along with

Hi all,
For those who attended the Cider Rally I‟m sure
you‟ll agree it was a great event as always. The Two
“Talls”, Stu & Jane, Mart & Eileen, her daughter Poll
and husband Dave set off early on the Friday
morning to avoid the usual traffic jam on the M5. We
stopped at Sainsbury‟s on the way into Sand Bay for
lunch and to pick up provisions, you know the stuff,
JD, Gin, Vodka crisps, peanuts and for me Mount
Gay rum, (recommended by my mate from the Pink
Palace!!). We arrived at the resort, makes it sound
posh, about midday eager to pick up our room keys.
However, rooms were not available until 3 pm so
what do you do for 3 hours? Go to the bar of course!!
Then what do you do until the evening meal? Have a
party in your room thanks to the foresight to buy pro-
visions! Needless to say I was shattered by the end
of the night!! I guess that set the theme for the
weekend, which peaked as Devious brought the
house down. I should also mention the Burlesque
theme which was very pleasing on the eye, I mean
very colourful!!
In terms of June activities it is an easy ”ride” for me.
Brian Johnson holds his annual curry night on the 2nd
and Graham Roach will lead a ride-out to the Royal
Welsh Bike Show on the 3rd. We then have the
European Hog Rally in Cascais, Portugal which I‟m
really looking forward to, if it‟s half as good as
Fuengirola.
In July RKK (Aka Andy Kenny Kendal) will once
again lead a ride to Weston Super Mare on the 5th
for the American Power bike night. Of course 6/7&8th
is Hogs in the Hayfields with Black Rat cider,
Devious, and probably the best quiz in the world!! So
don‟t miss out book your tickets now. There‟s more,
Jeff and Julie will host their superb Treasure Hunt on
the 15th, no pressure but 2011 set the bar!!
In August GWC will again support the Bristol Bike
Show on the 18th. A chill out day stood around taking
in the ambience and maybe a jar or three in the local
hostelries!!
As you know GWC has a dedicated planning com-
mittee for 2013 and we presented proposals at the
May meeting nights asking for your feedback. Out of
the 10 proposals 2 were voted out. First the 10
course dinner which we have now reduced to a more
traditional 3 course, which will reduce the cost and
the time sat at the dinner table, leaving more time to
party!! Second the 3 Lakes tour / Faaker See which
will now be replaced with a much shorter event, still
at the ideas stage. A two week tour was considered
too long for the majority of our members.
Your feedback also queried why the 2013 pro-
gramme does not include the annual GWC Rally at
Cleve. This decision was taken by the main
Committee prior to the list generated by the 2013
planning committee and was a topic of much
discussion. In brief the key factors for not including a
rally for 2013 are as follows:-
Hogs in the Hayfields has been a great success
over the past 4 years and Margam Park was for
the 1st Rally. The attendance numbers are not
growing as we would like. It is hard to build on
that success, possibly due to the venue which is
great for facilities but not the most attractive
location for pulling in members from other
chapters.
Cleve Rugby Club does not have any onsite
accommodation and not everyone is up for
camping.
After 5 years at Cleve Rugby Club we need a
change to keep the rally fresh.
There will be a new HD Dealership in Swansea
this year so more than likely a South Wales
Chapter which could impact on GWC member-
sh ip numbe rs ,
bringing uncertainty
when booking a
rally site and bands
etc.
The possibility of a
joint chapter rally
has been debated
to make it more at-
tractive to other
chapters.
