Rockland st Mary Primary
At Rockland st Mary Primary School our pupils are organized into two classes – R/Y1&Y2 in Moonbeams and Y3,4,5 & 6 in Comets.
We have written detailed progression maps for each foundation subject, which specify the skills and knowledge that will be developed through the subject
area, along with the national curriculum expectations, a list of key vocabulary, SMSC and enrichment ideas. The progression maps are written for single year
groups from EYFS up to Y6. We have decided to arrange our EYFS progression map into National Curriculum subjects in order for the progression of
knowledge and skills to be easy to see as pupils move from EYFS to Year 6. As we are a mixed aged class Reception- Year 2, Children within their Reception
year will be following the Early Years Foundation Stage and Development Matters within the mixed age class context. We will focus on skill sets and themes
highlighted with the EYFS and DM. We have added references to the areas of learning and development detailed in the EYFS in brackets.
These progression maps allow subject leaders to ensure that their curriculum area is progressive, and that children’s knowledge and skills develop as they
move through each year group.
Within the academic year 2019-20 teachers followed the Year A cycle (see pages 4-9), which is based around the topics contained within the Y1, Y3 and Y5
progression maps. The class structure at Rockland st Mary was re-organised in June 2020 - all of KS2 will be taught within one class from September 2020.
This means that we have edited our long-term planning to meet the needs of our new class structure.
From September 2020, EYFS/KS1 will continue to function on a two-year rolling programme, following the Y2 progression maps for the academic year 2020-
21, as detailed in the Year A and Year B Theme Planning tables (see pages 10-14.) By following the progression maps in a two-year cycle, we can be sure
that each pupil will have covered the required concepts contained within the national curriculum by the end of key stage 1.
From September 2020 KS2 will function on a 4-year rolling programme. (See pages 15-22) A detailed analysis of what pupils in Years 3- 6 have learnt
through their Key Stage 1 and 2 years was carried out and compared with our progression maps. The 4 year rolling programme has been designed to follow
the topics set within individual year groups progression maps. (See explanation below of how the needs of each of the 4 year groups will be met.)
• Year 6 have covered most of the topics from the Y3,4&5 progression maps, with the exception of earthquakes and flooding (Y3), electricity (Y4),
properties and changes of materials (Y5). In order for them to complete the content contained with the KS2 programmes of study (National
Curriculum) they need to study the content in the Y6 progression maps)
• Year 5 have covered the Year 3 topics within the academic year 2019-20, and the Year 4 topics within the academic year 2018-19. They will cover
Year 6 topics 2020-21 and then Year 5 topics 2021-22
Page 3 of 23
• Year 4 covered the Year 3 topics within the academic year 2019-20. They will cover Year 6 topics 2020-21 and then Year 5 topics 2021-22 and Year 4
topics 2022-23
• Year 3 covered the topics for Y1 and Y2 during their time in KS1. They will cover Year 6 topics 2020-21 and then Year 5 topics 2021-22, Year 4 topics
2022-23 and Y3 topics 2023-24.
The rolling programme details the topics taught in each half term. The teachers plan the concepts for each unit of work, deciding on the specifics of which
knowledge and skills will be taught.
• Teachers will consider how the learning experience will differ for the year groups they have within their class. For example, within the Year 3&4
class, the Year 4’s will be expected to draw upon the learning they conducted in Year 3 and build upon this through the topic in Year 4.
• Previous years vocabulary will be revised and pupils will be expected to use this confidently within the topic, as well as learning and using new
vocabulary.
• Questioning will be skillfully used to address the different expectations for each year group.
• At times the learning activities set will address different objectives to move the pupils’ learning on and ensure that a deep understanding of the
concepts is gained.
This will be monitored through lesson observations, learning walks and through book looks. This will be conducted by the Headteacher, the Governors and
by subject leaders. Pupil voice will be gathered as part of the monitoring to give pupils an opportunity to discuss their learning and to evidence how learning
is different for each year group. Monitoring will focus on cumulative sufficiency – when putting together all that the pupils have learnt, does it give them a
good overview of the subject?
See long term plan overview for subject details and half termly topic breakdown.
