SNOWFALL

By Roman Alty

What is snow?

Snow is made up of one or more tiny ice crystals that come together to form the unique shapes of a

snowflake

Why is snow called snow?

The word "snow" traces back 700 years to the year 1300.

It comes from word "sniwan", which then became "snew", then “snaw” and now we

call it snow

How many degrees does it take for snow to settle?

It needs to be 3 degrees celcius to settle.

Why does snow avalanche?

• An avalanche happens when a big slab of snow slides down sloping terrain. Each snowstorm adds new layers of snow and if the weight of the snow gets too heavy it causes the slab of snow to slide down the mountain slope. Most avalanches occur after a big snowstorm.

Are snow and hail the same?

• No - Snow is made from ice crystals• Hail is a frozen raindrop and is a lot bigger than an

ice crystal

How does snow turn to ice?

• More snow falls on other snow and then it freezes and makes ice.
