Drug Administration
• Drug: the agent which is obtained from plant, animal, mineral, marine or synthetic source that is taken in a predefined amount to get desired therapeutic effect.
• Drug Administration: the process of putting drug into body cavity is called drug administration.
Routes of drug administration
• Route means the path by which the drug enters into the body cavity.
• E.g Otrivin nasal drop is administered through nasal route.
• E.g Insulin is administered through subcutaneous (SC) route.
Oral Route
• For drugs administered orally, absorption may begin in the mouth and stomach.
• However, most drugs are usually absorbed from the small intestine.
• The drug passes through the intestinal wall and travels to the liver before being transported via the bloodstream to its target site.
Oral route
Advantage
• Safe
• Easy to use
• Cheap
• Less painful
Disadvantage
• Slow onset of action
• First Pass metabolism
• Drugs may get deteriorated by stomach acid and enzymes
• Not appropriate for medical emergency
Topical route of drug administration
• Definiton: The application of drug directly on the surface of the skin.
• It also include administration of drug to any mucous membrane.
• Eyes • Nose • Year • Skin surface • Vagina • Urethra
• It primarily provides local effect
• One can clean off old medication at the same place.
