As Dean of Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus
University, I am gratified by the close relationship RSM enjoys
with international business. This follows on from the School’s
history: it was launched 40 years ago with the support of
a group of Dutch multinationals, who sought to create a
breeding ground of excellent management education and
research in the Netherlands. Business is truly part of RSM’s
DNA – and in a reciprocal fashion, RSM has become part of
the fabric of multinational business.
Major corporations prefer to work with RSM. We are a source
of research targeted to specific challenges (from supply chains
and logistics to the swift organisational transformations
WELCOMEdemanded in today’s market); a pipeline of talent that
emerges from highly-ranked programmes with a highly-
international student profile; and a leader in innovative
business thought and practice (addressing such tough
issues as climate change, CSR and sustainability).
Further, we are the ideal partner for co- branding and
increased corporate visibility.
Located in Rotterdam – ‘the gateway to European business’ –
RSM offers companies many mutually beneficial partnership
opportunities. Whatever the specific needs of your organisation,
we would like to develop our relationship further, and look
forward to hearing more from you.
Towards a prosperous future,
George Yip

LEADERSHIP
LEADING THROUGH EDUCATION, RESEARCH, RELATIONSHIPS AND IDEAS
RSM is a leading business institution with the goal of creating
leaders in thought, action, and engagement in the greater
world. We do this by teaching the skills of personal leadership
development to our students; by creating and disseminating
new knowledge that emerges from our leading researchers;
and by promoting and fostering relationships with leaders in
business, in society, and in academia.

Our close connection with business – our major
stakeholder – continues to deepen to the benefit
of our corporate partners, our students and alumni.
PARTNEREDWITH BUSINESS
A growing number of multinational organisations have come
to appreciate RSM for the many opportunities the School offers
them: events that bring them in contact with high-potential
talent, possibilities for short-or-long-term consultancies with
MBA, MSc or BSc students, research projects with our faculty
or graduate students, and tailored or open-enrolment executive
education to retain their best talent, for example.

Shell Campus Ambassadors are the face of
the organisation on campus. Being RSM alumni
themselves, they offer first-hand experience
to current students on what it’s like to work
at Shell. They also work closely with faculty,
the alumni office and study associations
to support internships, guest lectures and
knowledge exchange forums. According to
David Pappie, Shell’s Global Recruitment
Manager – and RSM Campus Ambassador lead:
“RSM’s open attitude towards companies
like ours enables students to experience Shell’s
breadth of career opportunities… while I am
pleased with the excellent stream of RSM
talent making its way into Shell year after year,
RSM students are the ultimate winners.”

“but the co-branding with a top business school
is important, as is the access to their alumni.”

to share knowledge, processes, and business intelligence
with other international companies;
• Commission applied research projects with students
or professors of RSM.

RSM alumni from a particular company return to
campus to recruit new talent;
• ‘Try on’ potential new employees through short-term
consultancies or internships;
• Be part of recruitment events such as STAR Management
Week (BSc and MSc) or the MBA Annual Careers Fair;

RSM and the Erasmus School of Economics bring together
their best researchers in the Erasmus Research Institute of
Management (ERIM). ERIM’s mission is to produce scientific
research that improves organisational performance in terms
of both profitability and sustainability. 350 international
researchers within ERIM contribute to new knowledge across
five core streams:
• Business Processes, Logistics & Information Systems;
• Organising for Performance (Entrepreneurship &
Innovation, HRM, Corporate Engagement & Ethics)
• Marketing
• Finance & Accounting
• Strategy
ERIM’s thought-leaders, many of whom form the faculty of
RSM, are focused on the real issues and challenges that
impact business today. According to these evolving challenges,
RSM and ERIM (with ESE, the Erasmus School of Economics)
collaborate in the ongoing co-development of Centres of
Expertise. Inspired by concrete business problems and
working directly with organisations to advance in-company
innovation, the Centres bring together faculty members from
multiple disciplines to conduct applied, focused research in
specialised areas.
New knowledge arises from business-centred research, helping to shape the future of business
practice and policy. RSM and the Erasmus School of Economics bring together their best researchers
in the Erasmus Research Institute of Management (ERIM).

RSM: LEADERS IN BUSINESS EDUCATION ANDPROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
The ‘competition for talent’ can be lost at home. Changes
in business occur at such a rapid pace so rewarding and
challenging senior members of staff – whilst allowing them
to refresh their skills and sense of motivation – makes good
business sense. Not offering these rewards and continued
challenges can often mean that companies risk losing these
staff, along with their accumulated knowledge and their
expertise.
Most executives recognise that their management education
has a ‘shelf life’. Consequently they are anxious to continually
evolve by topping up their knowledge and skills so they are
able to continue to build their careers.
RSM’s Executive Education & Development department will
help to improve the way you do business with its company-
specific programmes which are tailor-made for executives.
The programmes, are custom-made from concept to delivery
and are designed to respond directly to client needs and
objectives.
Companies are seeking people who are able to connect
with others, to lead across regional and cultural differences,
and to navigate confidently through rapid organisational
changes. Those who are able, in other words, to continually
identify, innovate and facilitate the organisational
transformation necessary for success.
RSM has created a pipeline of business talent, and a pro-
active stance on matching pre- and post-experience students
with the right internship, research project, consultancy or
full-time position. This is done through the Career Services
office (pre-experience, full service office); through MBA Career
Development (which aids post-experience programme
participants in developing a career plan and meeting corporate
recruiters) and through such events as Erasmus Recruitment
Days, during which companies may meet talent face-to-face.
Further, our Executive Education programmes, both
tailored and open-enrolment, can be key in helping
companies to retain and refresh existing talent.

The biggest challenge facing global business today is the ‘competition for talent’:
finding the people who can make business prosper. To remain creative, agile, and adaptive
in an increasingly competitive arena, companies must find and recruit the very best talent,
with an emerging skill set of relevant characteristics.
RSM Executive Education & Development offers a portfolio
of timely, topical and targeted open enrolment programmes
offered to managers and specialists. These short courses
provide participants with new skills and knowledge that have
an immediate effect in the workplace.
The portfolio of open enrolment programmes makes use of
RSM’s core knowledge and expertise. Each programme is
developed and delivered by a leading expert in the field.
RSM’s Executive Education programmes bring learning into
business by challenging and stimulating participants’
thinking, from young talent to senior managers. Participants
gain new perspectives and capabilities, cutting-edge business
acumen and theoretical insights that help them drive their
organisation towards better performance and results.
With almost 40 years of experience in business and
management education, RSM is one of Europe’s top business
schools, and a leading provider of Executive Education in
the Netherlands.

“Most of our research is done in conjunction
with industry,” says Prof. Dr. Ir. Jo van Nunen,
Professor of Operations Research and
Information Sciences and Chairman, Dept. of
Decision and Information Sciences. “When
I first came to Rotterdam in the 70’s it was
like having a huge playground on my doorstep.
The things that we do at RSM today create
new control structures for that playground.”

Rotterdam School of Management is the top-ranked business
school of the prestigious Erasmus University. Founded in
1913, the University is one of Europe’s best-respected and
most prolific research universities. It takes its name from
famous Rotterdammer Desiderius Erasmus (1466-1536),
whose scholarly works helped usher in the Renaissance.
The first Nobel Prize in economic sciences was awarded to
Erasmus Professor Jan Tinbergen (1903-1994) in 1969.
Erasmus hosts the Erasmus School of Economics and the
Erasmus MC University Medical Centre, in addition to RSM.
RSM: FOUNDED BY BUSINESS FOR BUSINESS
In 1966, spurred by the need for suitable training and higher
educational facilities for managers in the Netherlands, a group
of Dutch multinationals initiated a new business faculty as a
joint venture of several faculties of the Netherlands School of
Economics (now Erasmus University).
The Interfaculteit Bedrijfskunde/Graduate School of
Management (now RSM) was founded by:
• Royal Dutch Shell
• Algemene Kunstzijde Unie
• Koninklijke Zout/Ketjen (AkzoNobel)
• Amsterdam-Rotterdam Bank
• Algemene Bank Nederland (ABN Amro)
• Unilever
• Philips Gloeilampen Fabriek
• Koninklijke Hoogovens en Staalfabrieken (Corus)
Each company donated 2 million guilders to launch the
school. The first graduate-level students – thirty of them –
entered the programme in October 1970.
LINKS WITH BUSINESS

foundations, RSM has
enjoyed a reciprocal
relationship with

In a world of rapidly-proliferating management
programmes, accreditation takes on new importance.
Rotterdam School of Management, and its associated
faculties and research organisations continue to
accrue accreditations indicative of proven quality.
RSM is one of the very small group of business schools with
the ‘Triple Crown’ of accreditation: EQUIS, AACSB, and the
Association of MBAs (AMBA).
In addition, the NVAO (the Nederlands-Vlaamse Accreditatie
Organisatie or Dutch-Flemish Accreditation Organisation) has
accredited our BScBA, BScIBA, MScBA, MScIM-CEMS and
Executive Master programmes.
ERIM, our research institution, has been accredited by the
Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) as
well as by the NVAO.

500 years. This history has encouraged the open-minded,
outward-looking, tolerant and inquisitive attitude with which
the country is identified today. It may also explain the
particular interest in foreign travel, business and language
that is a markedly Dutch trait.
From its inception, RSM has attracted the best international
faculty, and a culturally-diverse base of students and staff
(over 100 nationalities work and study together on campus).
Upon graduation, students join our Alumni Network – 16,000
strong and growing.
Our Alumni, many of whom are highly-placed in multinational
companies, form a global network of professional and social
support for each other, meeting at local events, workshops and
lectures as well as traveling together on alumni study tours.
Many of them come to international student recruitment fairs
and information sessions to describe their experience at RSM
to potential students. Often, they come to RSM when their
company wants to recruit new talent.
Our Students provide the diversity that distinguishes our
programmes, creating ‘global classrooms.’ Simply by working
on assignments in small groups, they develop the intercultural
skills so essential to management in a globalised economy.
Our Programmes provide participants with the potential to
have an exchange period with one of our partner schools,
international business schools recognised for their excellence.
RSM is a member of the prestigious Community of European
Management Schools (CEMS) and Partnership in International
Management (PIM).
Our alumni, faculty, partner
schools and students form
a world-wide network of
knowledge and expertise.
