Superstitions Concerning Spirits.

The favorite " heat " of the ghost is usu-ally tkagpot where he died. Hence, in orderto keep him at least Erom the house, theKaffirs carry a sick man out into th< openair to-die, and the Maoris used to removethe sick into sheds. Ifa Kallir or a Maoridied before he could be carried oul thihouse was tabooed and deserted. Thereare traces in Greece, liome and China ofthis custom of carrying dying persons intothe open air.

But in case a ghost should, despite of allprecautions, make his way back from thegrave, steps were taken to barricade thebouse against him. Thus, in some parts ofRussia and East Prussia, an ax or a lock islaid on the threshold, or a knife is hungover the door; and in Germany, atas the c rifiu is carried out ofthehouse, allthe doors and windows are shut, whereas,bo long as the body is still in the house.the windows, and sometimes the doors, areleft constantly open to allow the seal to

In some parts of England everybolt and lock in the house is unfastened sothat .the ghost of the dying may fly freelyaway.

But ifprimitive man knew how to bully,he also knew how to outwit the ghost.V'n example, a ghost can only find hisway back to the house by the way bywhich he left it. This little weakness aid.not escape the vigilante of our ancestors, and they took their measure accordingly. The coffin was carried out of the house.not by the door, but by a hole made for thepurpose in the wall." and this hole wascarefully stopped up as soon as the bodyhad been passed through it, so that whenthe jjliost strolled quietly back from thegrave be found to his surprise that therewas no thoroughfare. The credit of thisingenious device is shared equally byGreenlandears, Hottentots. Bechuanas, Sa-moleda, Qjibways, Algonkins, l.a<>sia:i>.Hindoos, Tibetians, Siamese, Chinese andFijians. These special openings, or "doorsor the •lead," are still to be seen in a villagepear Amsterdam, and they were commonin sorue towns of Central Italy, as Perugiaand Assisi. A trace of the siune customsurvives in Thnringen, where it is thoughtthat the s;!'<ist of a man who has beenbanged will return to a house it' the bodybe imt taken out by a window instead "fthe (lour.

The Siamese are content with carryingi!h- dead nan out by a special opening, endeavoring to make assurance doublysure by hutrying him three times roundthe house a; :iil speed—o proceeding wellcalculated to» bewilder the poor soul in thecoffin. The Arancanians adqpt the plan ofstrewing asbea behind the coffin as it isbeing borne to the grave, in «rder that theghost may net be able to tiii<: bis way back.• ' '-ontemporarj Review.
