Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time
This week on Ash Wednesday, we will begin our Lenten journey over this period of forty days we will be hearing readings inviting us to change our hearts and keeping the commandments. We will hear in the gospels, Jesus will challenge us to follow home live by his guidelines for self-denial, fasting, prayer and generosity to those in need. Here we are in the middle of February ready to begin the Lenten season that begins on Ash Wednesday and by coincidence it also falls on Valentine’s Day. Perhaps it’s a good time to reflect on the fact that Ash Wednesday and Lent are less about giving something up and more about learning again the art of self giving love. Lent is a time for each of us to acknowledge God’s love. The focus is on prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Its doing good works and a time to remember that it is also a penitential season. It’s a time to acknowledge and confess that we sometimes fail to live up to God's call to holiness. Through penance we admit to God that we are imperfect creatures but still trying to perfect our lives in Christ. Why is forty days significant in the observance of Lent? Scripture tells us in ( Mt, Mark ,Luke) that Jesus spent forty days in the desert before beginning his public ministry . He fasted and endured temptations by the devil. Our cele-bration of lent mirrors Jesus' time in the desert. In reflection these forty days is a perfect time for getting our spiritual lives back in order each year. Jesus is telling us and also teaching us to take time to bring this Lenten journey as a perfect time as a time for perfecting. Perfection and penance mean “sacrifice”, God doesn’t want us to be uncomfortable for his sake. To tor-ture ourselves with meaningless penance nor to give up pleasures we enjoy, so we will be grumpy to just fit the seasons. Many of us over the years have made sacrifices by giving up something we like to eat or do. Lent can be a perfect time to increase and not just decrease. As Lent begins, let us ask our lord for his special guidance in your daily practice of prayer , fasting, and good works throughout the Lenten season. As a suggestion there are various devotional practices daily during Lent. Seek God’s tender, love and mercy through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Consider fasting or abstaining from a favorite activity and pray that you will always be obedient to God’s will. Offer a Hail Mary for the safety protection of all human life and those most vulnerable in our society. Share the message of gods love with a friend or family member in need. If you need to ask someone for forgiveness don’t hesitate do it. Attend daily mass, and prayerfully meditate on God’s word. Perform a charitable act of kindness in gods holy name. Pray that your belief and faith in Jesus Christ our savior, may be strengthened. Invite a family member or friend to church, especially one who has fallen away from the practice of the faith. Pray or meditate on the stations of the cross, and ask Jesus to teach you how to humbly accept the cross you
bear. Pray the rosary daily and meditate on the joyful mysteries. Read a passage from sacred scripture and pray for an increase of faith , hope and charity. There are also other various ways. You may personally choose during lent. However what it comes down to is dedicating surrendering our whole selves to God. So as Jesus speaks to us as we begin our Lenten journey. He knows we sin, but more importantly, we are utterly forgiven, loved and chosen by Jesus.
In summary , Lent should not be a challenge for us but an opportunity to get chosen to God’s call embracing love for us. Peace, Deacon David
