———CALENDAR OF THE WEEK——— !! Dear Parishioners and Visitors, !
Happy Memorial Day Weekend. In the Mass, we
sing the “Memorial Acclamation,” where we recall Christ’s
sacrificial death, his resurrection, and our awaiting his re-
turn in glory, right after the Words of Institution, wherein
Jesus says, “Do this in memory of Me.” Every time we
celebrate Eucharist, we gather to remember and participate
sacramentally in the sacrificial, life-giving death of one
who came to lay down his life for his sheep. What we as a
nation celebrate on Memorial Day is very much akin to
what we as a worshipping community of Roman Catholics
celebrate every time we gather to offer the Eucharist.
As a nation, we remember all who served our na-
tion in the ranks of the military so that we might enjoy the
freedoms that we sometimes take for granted. It is im-
portant, however, to note that “remembering” is not just
something we do with our heads, one day a year. As Chris-
tians, the best way that we “remember” Christ is to live like
him, to follow his commandments, and to carry on his work
in the world. As Americans, the best way to remember the
sacrifices and contributions of those who served or are
presently serving our nation is to actively ensure that all
who share our land—citizens and non-citizens who come
here seeking freedom—that ALL have the opportunity to
participate in our democratic process and all have the abil-
ity to enjoy the freedoms that our ancestors fought and died
for. Memory is less of an exercise of the mind, and more
of an exercise of one’s life. The best way to memorialize
our forefathers and foremothers is to continue to insist up-
on, uphold, fight for, and share the freedoms that make this
nation great. Happy Memorial Day!
Fr. Michael

A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE from the Office of Family Life Education (A
Hope Appeal Agency)
In today’s gospel Jesus commands, “Teach
them to carry out everything I have commanded you.”
This command is meant for every Christian. In light of
this command, parenting is not only the most difficult
task a person can take on, it is also one of the most
apostolic and missionary tasks. Jesus commands all
parents to teach their children “all that I have com-
manded you.”
